Definitely not a looker, I would rather take a 911 Cabriolet or Mercedes AMG GT roadster over this car.

I'm really not sure about this. The i8, great product though it may be, isn't exactly setting the world on fire. I'm pretty sure a lot of the initial volume was people wanting to get something a little bit different, trendy, and brand new... the i8 roadster won't hit the market with the same bang the original did, so I'm wondering how many people this will really appeal to.. unless of course it has a big hike in its specs.

The i8 was never about volume. It's an experiment. In design, construction and philosophy. The i8 is a question that is yet to be asked. Does the sports car have a future? The i8 and BMW has shown the possibilities. Remember i8 is not a multi-million euro HyperCar but it embodies similar attributes but at a fraction of the cost. That is the achievement of the i8 it's a concept that extends possibilities without the extremely high price tag. What i3 and i8 shows is the feasibility in regards to mainstream CFRP production and application as well as introducing customers to an electric future.
The i8 Roadster will still have immense appeal as will an i8S which if you take a look at the Formula E pace car showcases some of the differences expected as well as a performance boost.

We can now say with certainty that the new BMW i8 Roadster will make its world debut next month at the 2017 LA Auto Show which kicks off on November 29. Built upon the exciting i8 Spyder Concept, the new open-top super hybrid will carry the name i8 Roadster and will go on sale in 2018.

The Roadster will be introduced with a new color – Electric Copper – and will feature a soft top which folds into the rear seats. The soft top can be opened in 14 seconds at a speed up to 60 km/h.

The open top plug-in hybrids holds double the battery capacity compared to the i8 Coupe, therefore leading to a longer driving range on electric power.

Our own sources also say that in addition to the revised power pack, the i8 Roadster will receive a revised chassis tuning and an increase in power to around 400 hp, while larger updates are also expected for the infotainment system iDrive as well as a modernized range of assistance systems.

More details are expected to be released in the next two weeks.
