Joy Defines the Future. BMW Vision EfficientDynamics Concept.

Sure free market economy will decide.

Imagine the demand outburst for cars & trucks in India & China in the next few year ... The world will be out of petrol in two or three decades. No matter of "Drill, baby, drill" actions ...

No petrol / oil, no petrol / diesel engines. :usa7uh:

But I guess new non-hybrid cars will be VERY rare & very exotic in eg. 2030. Perhaps some coach building brands only ... And at that time perhaps BMW will revive Triumph brand ... offering a car based on 2000 M3 CSL tech. :usa7uh: Who knows. But I'm sure ALL mainstream brands will offer hybrids cars at that time only - incl. Ferrari, Lamborghini, Porsche, BMW, Rolls-Royce etc.

Eg. BMW anticipates different needs & demands for cars in the future - depending on living area: for city driving only EV will be suitable, for highways & other roads: hybrids.

The big, and only interesting, question is, what will be the means of transportation for people who love the fun of driving, the thrill and rewards of a properly built drivers car?

We're gonna have to start getting used to the future man. It's just about us car guys because we got a whole world to worry about. 99% of the public don't give a crap how a car drives, so it won't make a different to them. At least, I will still be able to ride a motorcycle, even if it is electric. LOL

Gene I am gonna think of you when i start my m3 V8 and go full lock sideways smoking the the rear tires like there is no tommorow.

I work my ass off to make money. Why because i want to enjoy life. And for me enjoying life means 8400 rpm airbox sound, full lock drifts, racing on race tracks. etc. Cars are emotion. And electric cars are zero emotion. I am not gonna buy such car as a vision even if it looked like a ferrari.

I want RWD i want a clutch pedal i want a limited slip diff i want to get connected to the drive.

Maybe the petrol runs dry but no one really knows.

It s good to have such efficient cars for work or daily drives. But next to that i want buy myself a car which i can enjoy that means highrev atmo which set my hair on fire. If i can t buy it anymore then i stop working spend nothing more on cars and gonna see the world. Then i am gonna enjoy life on compleet other way. But i don t buy cars anymore. I am looking for a fun car. I am willing to spends lots of money on it. But not on this.

I like the writing of betty he is right.

So be it, it is your perogative to do as you please. I'm not an environmentalist, but I understand the situation we are in as humans and refuse to stick my head in the sand.

By the way, the petrol will run dry at some point, no one is debating that. The debate is when it will run dry.

Except for all the personal attacks on the previous page, there has been lots of good points raised in this thread.

Sometimes reading other people's opinions can indeed change perception if one thinks with an open mind. I feel we are on the verge of a new automotive era and one that makes perfect sense if one would for just one minute forget all the motoring enthusiasm we relish and think about the consequent effects all this has on our environment?

It can either begin now or 30 years from now, but make no mistake a drastic change is coming.

It's funny how many people missed the memo on this. :D

Industry is to blame for that - they've made things too accessible for the everyday person. So people just don't care where or how it came to be - just that they can get it for $1 at the local store. You know its a sad state of affairs when the question: "where does chicken or beef come from?", posed to a 5 year old, gets the answer: "the supermarket".

Still, I would be a hypocrite if I say that I don't benefit from these things daily, because I sure as hell don't want to drill for my own oil, refine it, and stick it in my car ;). But as alternate fuels become more and more accessible and cheaper to own, I'll be on the bandwagon for sure... if only to save myself extra $$ and have the feel good factor that I'm doing my part.

I do agree with you. But my reason for moving to alternatives is because they are far more sustainable for long term purposes than oil. Besides people not understanding the fact that oil running out is a definite and the question is "when", the other main problem is that "eco"-idiots love to blame cars for the green house emissions. The lunacy behind that is mind boggling. Sure, cars are a large contributor green house gases but they are not the only or even the largest contributor to it. Besides greener car tech, I think a lot of money should be spent making and fine tuning better solar tech because that is a power we know for a fact will be hear for another millions of years and also the fact that enough sunlight hits the earth in one hour to power the world for a whole year.

C'mon, get with the times people. It's our f__king future, stop fighting and get with the program.

We're gonna have to start getting used to the future man.

Could you please explain what you mean by this.

It's just about us car guys because we got a whole world to worry about. 99% of the public don't give a crap how a car drives, so it won't make a different to them. At least, I will still be able to ride a motorcycle, even if it is electric. LOL

Yes, we might have to resort to driving motorcycles, at least that is still fun :D

Could you please explain what you mean by this.

You asked: The big, and only interesting, question is, what will be the means of transportation for people who love the fun of driving, the thrill and rewards of a properly built drivers car?

My answer about getting used to the future means that we will have to get over the whole "Driver's car" concept. As the future progresses, the driver involvement will be less and less until we reach a point where the car will drive itself. It has already started when we don't really have to move our necks because we have blind spot indicators and rear-view cameras, we don't have to brake or accelerate because the car's dynamic cruise control handles all of that, and GPS systems are getting smarter and smarter. I don't know exactly because unlike Scott, I don't sit in marketing and future product meetings but I'm guessing another 20-25 years we'll definitely have driverless cars.

In simple terms, no more driver involvement. We're gonna have to get used to the future. Of course, I hope I'm wrong.

Because of that, I'll still stick to motorcycles until they figure out the motorcycle that ride's itself but I'm sure that won't be too hard. ;)

Thank you, that made much more sense (I was thinking of the way to fuel the drivers cars, but in this scenario, that will not be an issue as the cars will not exist). I agree, manufacturers will almost all do what we are starting to see now - one platform for every car in the lineup. One platform means one behaviour, somewhat altered by electronics. It is a terrifying development for anyone who likes driving, because the cars will all be the same and it is not hard to imagine that the basic behavious will be comfortable and very dull.

This is of course good news for BMW as the effort needed to remain perceived as the sporty brand will be radically reduced.

Funny thing is when motorized cars first appeared they were considered quite 'uncool' and downright dorky compared to handsome horse driven carriages. But a combination of progress, pop culture and necessity made them sexy and cool. People who don't realize the same will happen to electric/fuel cell cars have even bigger blinders on than the horses that pulled those carriages.

Environment

It is a interesting question, of course we have to think about the future and our childrens future. Because of the increasing number of cars in the world the total amount of emissions and consumption is increasing, despite cars consuming less.

It is funny how people everywhere complain about cars regarding CO2 emissions.
If I decide not to eat as much meat, I won´t have a vacation house/cottage, I will live in a small apartment or a well insulated house. I take my bicycle to work, to grocary shopping and the grocaries are ususally made in the "neighbourhood area". That is I don´t buy meet from brasilia instead I pay extra for meat from a local butcher (Brasilia is a long way from Europe). I consume few items, don´t buy clothes just for the sake of it, a nice suit for work and som shirts will do. Don´t have to have the latest t-shirt for my after work time, things 2 years old will do (clean and not "broken" of course).
The hevay duty traffic is increasing and also stands for the CO2 emissions. People usually never think how stuff gets to the store.

Is it still not ok to drive a 911 2000 km /year?
Is it better to not change anything in your lifestyle and drive a prius, but you use it 60 000 km/year?

Car enthusiast often gets the bad eye from people, but people usually can´t think for them selves and think a couple of steps extra.
They usually just repeat the mantra "cars bad, CO2".

If the petrol runs out u can for example ethanol convert your car, especially for F.I. cars ethanol is very good. First of ethanol gives a very homgenous combustion, petrol is a mix match of very many "carbon-chains". In addition the lower temp of the exahust gases of ethanol means you can increase boost without the risk of knocking.
A couple of years ago, GM/Saab had a 1.4 with about 220 hk.

I would love a N.A engine, if I cant run it on petrol I can think of converting it to ethanol in a couple of decades.
I would love something light and RWD without electromechanicla steering, at least until it is executed properly.
If I cant get a NA M-engine I would be very very happy with a Z2-coupe with the 272 hp straight six.

I know Scott has told that there will be no sixes in the z2, but thats what I dream about.

Options? Cayman/Boxster normal and S, I even last year discovere the jou of the MX-5, dispite the "lack of power" it was extremly fun to drive.

I will probably own a hybrid/EV as a family car in 10 years, BUT I will continue to drive my enthusiast ???? km/year without a bad conscious, knowing it is the sum of what you do and support that counts. Not only what car you owns.

It could be good or bad. My question is, what will set them apart from the others besides exterior/interior design? You can't be the ultimate driving machine when it's not being driven. :t-hands:

Like I said. Either get with the program or become one of those people who hold on to the past for so long that they lose their future.

That is a valid point. BMW will keep saying that they are making sporty cars until they are driven by a Mac. We are, of course, getting carried away here, but it is interesting to know the reasoning behind it all. I think BMW is moving away from the sporty image bacause it has been decided that the sporty route will not be possible to follow for BMW given the recent development. This talk about platform sharing and EFFICIENT dynamics tells a tale... it is quite obvious if one takes a look at what is being communicated.

Furthermore, what is good for BMW is not necessarily good for its fans.

But the car itself when you see it in it's futuristic dystopian styling we want you to go , OK I can imagine this with a conventional body shell when you envision the broadened wheel arches and the swoop over them to the front door.

This was true for me, I love the look of it and I can easily imagine what it would have looked like in showroom guise. It has so much M1/Homage in it...

Be sure the companies / brands who are all about sporty & driver oriented cars, and offering plenty driving fun will do everything their hybrids and even full-EV will be fun to drive. Perhaps not compared to E30 M3, but definitely compared to the other cars in the segment at that time.

Tech goes on, life changes. Not much ago eg. smoking was cool, and smokers were everywhere, smoking was allowed everywhere ... Smoking was promoted as lifestyle of freedom, success & individuality.

Today? Smoking in officially proclaimed being bad. Smokers are baned from (closed) public places etc. Freedom of choice is limited somehow - compared to the past times. But with time the vast majority accepts that.

And same will be with cars: all-petrol, all-diesel cars will be promoted as bad, perhaps in 2050 the will be even completely banned from eg. public roads. Be sure.

But eg. racing on private tracks in your gas-guzzling 2010 911 will still be fun in 2050. :usa7uh:

And as said: yes, perhaps today hybrid & EV tech looks clumsy & totally non-sporty. But that will change with times.

Mind the beginnings of steam first cars, or ICE - when cars were slower than horse-driven carriages. And cars were loud - scaring the horses, emitting smelly exhaust gases etc. And many said cars wouldn't have future. But the progress went on, and here we are.

And the new drives - either petrol-hybrid, diesel-hybrid, full-electric, or H-cell cars etc - will definitely evolve into great cars over the time. Don't judge them by current state of tech development ... :usa7uh:

Sure the motoring feeling won't be the same as today. But who says it will be worse? :D

Eg. have you evere driven petrol go-kart vs electric go-kart? Electric go-karts are killers - with that instant torque available, with the superb accelerations. Although driver has to know how to drive it - when you manage it, it's much more fun to drive - since the chassis enables same things as the petrol-driven go-kart chassis.

I'm sure 99.9% of people here (and else) will adopt to the new cars & tech ... Yet still there will be some who will want to be special, and using nostalgic things & tech from the past.

:t-cheers:
