Front is barely tolerable (that huge black area ), while rear is tragic.
Another car, another fail from BMW. Is no longer funny, but sad.

Yeah. It's only 200kg lighter than an M5 which has a twin turbo V8, AWD, big comfy seats, more speakers, four doors and a bigger boot.

The M2 is not a pocket rocket.

Why is it so heavy? I don't understand honestly.

I like it. Maybe to some degree, because I got shocked by the poor leaked pics ... and official ones look worlds better. Weakest part is imho still the part in the back (decklid, taillights), which are a 1:1 takeover from the base car.

I don't get, why so many are suprised by the weight. Under which stone did they live the last years? The body in white, which is marginally larger in a M3/M4 isn't the weight driver for years! It is the tech-package (drivetrain, axles, ...), which is a shared technology between all G8x variants. Which to some degree is positive, because you get a superb package in the lower M2 class compared to all competitors.

Moreover: This (weight relation) didn't change at all between F8x and G8x!!We discussed ad nauseam, that "official weight numbers for ECE/DIN" are off, because calculation rules have obviously changed!
A F87 M2 Competition tipped the scales at sport auto slightly over 1600kg. And was therefore only about 40kg lighter than a F82 Competition (both DCT). Why on earth should this be different with G8x generation? I.e. generally G8x platform/drivetrain added approx. 60-70kg to the F8x generation. All in line, all expected.

Agree. Weight gain is to be expected. It won't be a barrier to driver engagement for the M2. The M3/M4 carry their weight well.

However a less playful rear + wider tyres and + more weight will undoubtedly make the M2 feel less fun or dramatic at lower speeds. Speed sensation up to 40-50mph will likely be worse.

Thankfully the 718 GTS and A110 are still in production if weight is important to you.

The M2 is a popular track car.

How can you tell? Just look at the extensive aftermarket support for suspension, brakes, braces, roll cages, remaps, engine parts, exhausts and carbon fibre body panels.

In comparison an X3M or M5 have extremely limited chassis modification options.


No surprise. For the past 4-5 years, smaller cars have been close to the same weight as larger ones.

Yes, but the M4 is not an old model, it came out last year… The smaller M2 should not weigh the same as a M4.

The 2-Series is based on the same platform as the 3-Series and many M4 components are carried over to the M2.

In a nutshell the M2 is an M4 stretched by 10-15cm in length. Hence why they weigh relatively the same.

Excactly, they are both from the same generation, and the M4 which is streched out and therefore has more metal should in principle weigh more. But maybe the cheaper M2 has less lightweight parts…
