M2 [Hot!] BMW M2 (2022) G87

The BMW M2 is a high-performance version of the BMW 2 Series automobile developed by BMW's motorsport division, BMW M GmbH. As the 2 Series replaced the 1 Series coupé and convertible models, the first-generation M2 was marketed as the most basic M model in the range. Official website: BMW M
It weights excactly the same as the M4 and it is 200 kg heavier than the previous M2, and in the reviews I have seen the high weight is unfortunately noticeable and criticized. But I like the looks….

Let's wait for real weighting numbers! Real world numbers (no driver, full tank) of the F87 M2 Competition were >1600kg in each serious test! I do NOT expect the G87 to be over 1800kg in comparable weighting ...

Yes, now the official BMW weights are more realistic than before and test weight are even lighter than oficial weight sometimes. But it is still a heavy car.

But it is still a heavy car.
Yes it is! And it was known before, as BMW strategy to take over the whole "technique kit" of the M3/M4 for the smaller M2 was already introduced with the F-series M. So - since the G-series M3/4 is approx. 120kg or so heavier than F-series M3/M4, it was also expected, that the G-series M2 gets heavier around this mark...

So - for anyone only slightly interested in this topic not a surprise and no need to run havoc now after release ;)

Although I also like/prefer LIGHT cars, you also have to see the following:
  • you get a completely outstanding and unparalleled (concerning competition) package with the M2 - incorporating an absolute brilliant drive-train from a vehicle class one level above for comparably a "bargain"!
  • weight always has to be seen in relation to the vehicle setup/architecture! In the case of the M2 with its low cog and extremely wide track, plus the sophisticated damping/axle geometry: You don't literally feel the mass as turn-in, braking, etc. are simply spot-on! So it feels for sure absolutely "nimble". I'm sure, I know the verdict regarding nimbleness/dynamics, if one has driven side-by-side an old E46 M3, which in normal (non CSL) form was around 1570kg and a new G87 weighing around 17xxkg! At least my verdict would be crystal clear.

If you read through the different M2 launch reports, imho one thing is the common denominator:
The G87 opposed to the F87 is much easier to drive insanely quick and be thereby stable! So for the average Jon-Doe it is much more approachable as the comparably tail-happy, unsettled F87! I like this development and for me it is exactly the right development-direction of the M engineers!
Making a vehicle, which is always tail-happy, oversteering, breaks-loose ... is maybe funny to some degree, but for sure no engineering masterpiece!
And it is even NOT the case, that you can't drift the G87 ... you can for sure ... but you can also drive much faster safe compared to the F87. I like this.
After all the M2 is and always will be a multi-purpose daily-driver! And not a crazy once-every-4th weekend tire-smoker ... so being more easily to manage is an important feature.

But in all these daily-driver areas the M4 is the better car. IMHO the M2 should be much lighter and cheaper to make sense to chose it over the M4.

G-Series cars are a dramatic improvement on the F-Series ones for the following reasons:
-Non-run flat tyres.
-Michelin Pilot Sport 4 S instead of Michelin Shitty Sporty.
-Suspension that’s more compliant and not skittish on uneven surfaces and bumpy road. This was particularly noticeable on UK roads.
-Signifigantly improved traction control. Less obtrusive and unsettling.

Out of the box, the F-Series are more complete while the F-Series kept being rectified from base to competition and then CS.

This is imho not true!
A M4 Coupe manual starts in Germany at 93.400€.
A M2 Coupe manual starts in Germany at 72.800€.
We are talking about a delta of 20.600€, which means, that a M4 Coupe is almost 30% more expensive, ALTHOUGH the whole technical package is the same. So the M2 is "a bargain". What prizing do you expect? A Mercedes A45S with its far inferior drive-train costs in Germany the same (72.500€)
... and what do you mean with "much lighter"? I don't want to repeat my previous posting! Having the same brilliant/outstanding drive-train, it can't be much lighter! You want a cheap M2 with a overboosted run-of-the-mill B48 without the extensive structural rigidity measures, which then costs in the 60k+ range. No thanks. Keep this crap ;)

I have bought a GR86 out of frustration because BMW gives us cars made out of lead! The GR86 is a masterpiece for ca 35.000 euro and 1270kg.

A car balance where M headquarters have dreams on. No this is no high hp car and no it’s not a luxery car. But fun on backroads and on Track it is awesome.

We BMW M enthusiasts don’t need a smaller M4! We need 1M Coupe with 340hp 4 cil turbo max 1300kg! A Drivers car like the GR86, but with a BMW M badge slammed on it.

I lost my interest in all those heavy BMW. The only BMW which interest me is the new X1 with aproxx 300hp or the x3M as a family car. Bmw does not build any drivers cars anymore! 1700kg has nothing to do with a drivers car. A 1700 kg car that lights up his rear tires is no drivers car!

A brand that has made such nice products gives us this! Please what a joke looking at my White 1M Coupe.

230i(has a mechanical LSD)
M240i
M2
M3/M4
CS/CSL

That IMO is a ladder of good choices are different price points and driving habits. I can’t think of any other car manufacturer that has an equivalent portfolio of RWD cars.

Nice portfolio of badge tuning.

The base car is to big to begin with.

130i hatch and the little 1M Coupe is much better size for a drivers car. If i wanted a 6 cil turbo right now i would choose a Supra manual lightweight instead of a new M2.

New M2 is just an other big high horsepower car. It gives no special feeling like the 1m coupe did or the cayman GT4!

I wished bmw made us crazy again like they did with 1m coupe. I was watching the internet every day about news on this car.

He really loves the car, what is remarkable is that if there is a sensory difference in handling compared to the M3/M4, it offers everything that an M2 should be with the entrails of higher segments at a lower price, an M2 with all the letters

What are your thoughts on the MX5? In 5 years it will be probably be the last affordable RWD sports car for sale.

BMW M

BMW M GmbH, formerly known as BMW Motorsport GmbH, is a subsidiary of BMW AG that manufactures high-performance luxury cars. BMW M ("M" for "motorsport") was initially created to facilitate BMW's racing program, which was very successful in the 1960s and 1970s. As time passed, BMW M began to supplement BMW's vehicle portfolio with specially modified higher trim models, for which they are now most known by the general public. These M-badged cars traditionally include modified engines, transmissions, suspensions, interior trims, aerodynamics, and exterior modifications to set them apart from their counterparts. All M models are tested and tuned at BMW's private facility at the Nürburgring racing circuit in Germany.
