I myself try posting such content that would add to the discussion, if anyone feels as if I'm cluttering any threads or spamming with out any context feel free to let me know.

I myself try posting such content that would add to the discussion,

That's all it ever should be, and has always been. It worked well in a self-policing sort of way. This is a discussion forum primarily, not YouTube. I think what has changed in the meantime is a combination of two things; the complete saturation of videos being made and put on YouTube by every man and his dog, and the presence of some individuals with absolutely no quality filter.

The new X1 (LCI) has just been presented and the first totally relative videos were posted, in a thread that was paractically dead for years, videos that although I look for them on YouTube I do not get even half of those published here so which I like as always and thanks to the members find what is not in other forums or sites.

There are already members wondering what they can post and what not, this does not seem to me to be so much, it is not a big deal. Obviously and I always repeat without exaggeration, there are thousands of members and the only thing is to have criteria and balance.

Mate you have a problem. But fear not, a solution is just a pornhub subscription away...

Don't tell me you're still paying for porn?

If a thread is dead it's because nobody wants to discuss that particularly car. If they did then the thread would be active. Therefore, why the need to give it the kiss of life just for the sake of it? The point of this forum isn't to keep as many threads alive as possible. It's to provide a place for people to DISCUSS cars (not just post videos, YouTube is the place for that).

This is NOT related to this thread.

For example should I see an M2CP video that I like and want to share it. I should either post in the BMW videos which is dormant or create a BMW M2 videos thread for one video? This is counterintuitive and will discourage me from posting any media in this forum. The M2 and X1 threads aren’t that popular I don’t see many videos being posted there to warrant a dedicated video/instagram thread.
But it's not one video is it? You're constantly posting videos, often of the same car. What you find interesting other people may not. Usually people would use their own common sense before posting as to whether it really needs to be posted, and that way it wouldn't feel like it's clogging up the thread.

@hovabongZA , we don't see anything wrong with your posting videos and/or other embedded media. We just want to make sure the discussions remain engaging for everyone to enjoy.
There are a ton of social media "influencers" and other wannabe influencers out there that post their opinions on cars. Their videos have a much better fit within a "Reviews" thread, and/or "Videos" thread, instead of the "Official" ones.
This way, we all win. Official threads remain uncluttered of embeds, making them more engaging and even faster to load on guests and member's computers (especially those with slow Internet connections, and/or cell phone internet access that is metered).

It's quite simple. The forum is only as good as the content, and if you don't employ some kind of quality control there's a risk this place just degenerates into a mess.

Thank you @Betty Swollocks . That is indeed true and is what we want to continue to uphold.
Of course, fixing existing threads retroactively now is a daunting task and one that will have to be done as time permits. But moving forward, I encourage the community to report those embeds that could be better placed elsewhere in video, pictures, and/or reviews, comparisons, etc. threads; and please DO post such media content in other more suitable threads.
This is by no means a ban on media posts. We do enjoy them as well, and even more so when they are posted within threads where members expect to find them.

A slight update to the site rules is coming up addressing this.

Obviously and I always repeat without exaggeration, there are thousands of members and the only thing is to have criteria and balance.
Thank you @dalab , this is in line with what we've raised here.

BS! I ain't gonna go through Instagram or YT to see/search for a video related to the car i'm interested in. I want to see them in their threads here, because it's a CAR forum, regardless where they come from, i want to see them posted (reviews, comparison tests, single tests, everything!). If i'm not interested in watching the video, i'll just scroll down, but i'll appreciate poster for finding it and posting it here, so Hova and others - just keep 'em coming.

;)

Whoa easy there Darth TycoonGTR! :D Please don't let your feelings cloud your reasoning. I KNOW you are being biased right now, and it is not due to the issue at hand; which is a non-issue if you go back to the days when you were a Moderator. All members are quite welcome to keep posting embedded media but also encouraged to help keep the site organized. You don't have to be against anything and all that Betty Swollocks says just because.
May I remind you who was the Moderator that advocated bringing back a permanently banned member with the name of mofomat so many years ago? ;)

Hey Mark,

That link thread is locked, so sharing my thoughts here (afterall, underlying issue is the same - linking, whether it is hyperlinks or embedded media is doing the same thing - allowing outside content on the site). But before I do, just want to also say, your forum, your rules. I know you work hard to keep it up and running, so yes you get to run it as you feel fit. Only you are aware of the problems you face. So these are just my thoughts (and hopefully constructive)... and I don't feel too strongly about any of it.

Linking - I think is fundamental to web being what it is today. That was the whole point of HTML in the first place. Without linking, the web is very broken. I know you said in the other thread about it wreaking havoc with the site. I am curious to understand how?

I myself have stopped having discussions many times because it is hard to back one's point without being able to link to outside sources. Also, fact is, outside a handful of people here, not many have original/interesting content that can on it's own sustain a discussion. So you need outside content to keep the discussion and debate going. Shutting that spigot off, ultimately, I think hurt the site itself.

Having said that, I see the other side too - link dumping (and media dumping) is an issue. For people doing it, why? Unless you are promoting your own content, why are you doing the job of collecting stuff for others? What do you gain? Atleast, post your reaction/comment on why you are sharing a link/media? I post media sometimes, but I usually also post why I am posting it - cause I think something is beautiful or ugly. Or a review makes a great point or is just stupid.

So there you go, my not so strongly held thoughts on the topic :).

Thank you Sunil. This issue deals with SEO, link rot, and the very death of forums. I won't go into details here but if interested we can PM and I can show you examples.

In a nutshell, blogs and other non-forum based websites have 100% control of what gets published. And you rarely see blog owners allowing external links in their discussion commentaries. Any/all sites other than most forums do the same when it comes to external links.

Like I said in that other thread, this is perhaps a temporary solution.
However, I can say now that if I were to surgically correct this issue today (much like reddit and facebook do, for example), the staff and I would have no choice but to single out the members that are abusing the system (by posting all these link-dumps and media embedded posts in excess), and proceed to thread ban them, and/or ultimately ban them permanently due to spamming the forums (much like reddit does, as they consider the abusive posting of too many external links "spam").

This would certainly allow, say, those in the participating members usergroup to be able to post working links again, alongside Premium and Staff members.

As you see, the permanent solution is way harsher for a few members. So far that's the only other solution we have, other than the pay to get working links in your posts.

How about throttling? Everyone gets x links/media embeds per week or month . Abusers will run out of their quota early while others can link/embed to have meaningful discussions. Maybe even a premium mode - pay to get more.

Ban the link dumpers and make it work again i say..
like sunny said.. the forum is broken without links.
when you can't press a link that is posted (especially when you are on a mobile device) to copy and paste is such an annoying thing to do, so you rather just stop participating in the discussion.

Why should the masses suffer for the crime of a few?.. this can be applied to other matters on this forum as well as society in general.
Dare to be different, dare to single out the ones that disrupt the peace.

Thank you. I've thought of something very similar before. Great minds think alike they say.
Needs custom coding of course, but definitely something to consider.

So what you are basically saying is:

"The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few, or the one".

Wow! :eusa_doh:

Anyway, i've never mentioned BS in any situation, what i've said is my personal opinion about posting embeds, any of them... What Betty thinks i couldn't care less, not involved in my opinion about this. Cheers! :t-cheers::t-cheers:
