Re: 01 thread: F01 / F02 BMW 7er - Spy Pics & Info Part V (The Countdown)

All these pics and infos makes me curious to see how it will really look like. It's moving back to the sporty elegance of the Beemers, yet with a daring front... I really wonder. And I don't think these PS, even if very close, can show us the real car.

Honestly, I think in one month we all (well, only the poor fellows who did not see it before, like me) will be surprised.

It will be interesting, I can't wait to see it! A new A8, 7er or S-Class is always a very important event in the automotive world!

Re: 01 thread: F01 / F02 BMW 7er - Spy Pics & Info Part V(The Countdown)

About the absence of door handles.
You don't really see them. The wooden/metallic panel of the front door comes off the door a little towards the middle, creating a space behind it where you can put your hand around. So you do'nt really see a door handle. You just have to put your hand behind the wooden/metallic panel.

If I understand you correctly, this also sounds like going back to the classics...I remember my first car, which was a BMW 2002, which I loved very much, had similar door handles (also the first and second generation 5er , if I remember correctly). It was hidden behind the door armrest and you reached it very 'naturally' by slipping your hand in the void of the armrest to open the door... I remember , I was disappointed, when BMW put the door opening handles up in the door panel, like everybody else, because in my opinon the 'hidden' version worked perfectly and 'naturally'

Thanks for all the info, you are providing, btw.... helps to survive the next 4 weeks :t-cheers:

Re: 01 thread: F01 / F02 BMW 7er - Spy Pics & Info Part V (The Countdown)

I´m still dissapoint about the side profile of the car, is the grey area pof every single BMW of the Bangle era. His side profiles just look boring, or even ugly if we look to the E90´s one. With this F01 i have mixed feelings, in some pics i like it, and in some pics i thinks it´s not so pretty.

Pretty:

Ugly:

I'm surprised you are putting this one in the ugly section, it looks sleek and cool in that pic too.

The F02 pic does show some bad proportions and makes the long wheelbase look uglier than the F01.

The front is not as daring as you may think. The headlights are an evolution of the current ones, with a touch of X5 / X6 styling. The bumper incl. the intakes is not that far away from FL E65, or even E38 or E32 (with shark-like nose). The hood is quite flat & wide - as seen on old BMWs.
The only "daring" elements are enlarged kidney grilles, and the sharp & prominent creases on the side of the hood.

The back is much more interesting. Getting inspiration from E32 7er (eg. L-shaped rearlights; gone is the clap shell boot lid replaced by E32 style one), incorporating some FL E65 elements (eg. metal strip), and presenting some new elements seen on CS Concept (eg. bumper, rear light graphics with LEDs).

Same case with interior: mix of past BMWs (driver oriented cockpit, stick shifter), some E65 elements (like heavy decoration, central dash & console influenced by iDrive), plus some elements of modern BMWs (e-shifter, typical new dash styling in X5 / X6 style etc)

His side profiles just look boring, or even ugly if we look to the E90´s one.

Side profile is - like the driver oriented cockpit & shark-like nose - is the biggest "back to the roots" element: featuring prominent straight upper character line (shoulder line), and the lower one as well (skirt line). So, the car looks like much horizontal & sleeker: enhancing elegant & luxurious appearance. Side panels are still "bloated" as on E65, but not as heavily. Also the prominent side character creases make the car less bloated as well, and therefore the styling more balanced. Yet the "flame surfacing" elements like sharp creases + convex / concave areas are much more prominent & present on F01 than they are on E65.

Btw, just like the E65's side profile is very clean, so it is the one of F01. Yet due above mentioned features, and shallower greenhouse / lower & more curvy roofline the car looks much sportier than E65.

And due its dimensions & perfect proportions (which are zillion times better than the ones of E65) it has much more presence than E65.

IMO side profile is MUCH better than the one of E65 - even more modern & just as boring or radical - since the only "radical" element on E65's side profile is the visible side cut line of the boot lid. Otherwise E65 profile is quite conventional & "boring".

Yes, the design & styling of F01 look much cleaner & harmonious than the ones of E65. But they are not perfect either - the intriguing BMW aesthetics is still present (the details!), and that makes the car very thrilling.

Think of E70 X5 vs. E53 X5 - it's almost the same story. Versus the E53 the E70 is looking luxurious & sporty / aggressive at the same time, styling is very dynamic & modern (flame surfacing), design is an evolution of the previous model(s), proportions are sportier, panels are less bloated.

Yet no design revolution this time.

PS: regarding F02 - yes, the proportions are less perfect on F02 than the ones on F01. But that has always been the case in SWB vs LWB variants - not only in BMW case.
To make it look better F02 needs the biggest wheels possible - but in that case the ride comfort is somehow compromised which is just the opposite of the aim of F02.

Re: 01 thread: F01 / F02 BMW 7er - Spy Pics & Info Part V (The Countdown)

no offense to anyone but I seriously think the mods need to clean up this thread! Half way through I was acutally pondering if this was really a thread for the F01!?

A big thanks to the OP for being so brief yet informative with all his posts.

just one more Q, Do the huge kidney grills look odd? Or does the front actually balance out well with the headlights?

TIA :)

Re: 01 thread: F01 / F02 BMW 7er - Spy Pics & Info Part V (The Countdown)

Problem is there is a lot of defensiveness in this tread. The 7-series is a competitor to be counted on and this really shows in this tread.

Re: 01 thread: F01 / F02 BMW 7er - Spy Pics & Info Part V (The Countdown)

It kinda looks like a giant 5 Series E60, but I'm not saying it in a negative way.

No, I don't think you are saying that in a negative way, I think you are saying that based on tha fact that you have never seen a 5-series.

BMW 7er neu: Er kann Verkehrsschilder lesen - sueddeutsche.de

Here are some pics of the new nightvision camera in the 7er and the traffic sign reading camera:

Here is a brief summary :

The first part deals with the improved nightvision system:
- infrared based (like current system)
- higher resolution
- can detect pedestrians within 100m range
- Warning will be displayed (in central display and head-up display) , if on collision course
- can detect, if pedestrian is on 'safe' sidewalk... in this case no warning displayed, just yellow highlight
- sophisticated recognition software

Re: 01 thread: F01 / F02 BMW 7er - Spy Pics & Info Part V (The Countdown)

Now this is nice. The fact that it displays a warning in case of a pedestrian on the road is really smart and useful. You can use the Infrared like the rear-view mirror, without really loking at it, but if there is a pedestrian (hard to detect because small) the warning alerts you. :usa7uh:

The traffic sign, I don't know. Too much information, and you have to look at the road. Kinda wierd if my car reminds me of every sign, I'm not a child and I have eyes...

Re: 01 thread: F01 / F02 BMW 7er - Spy Pics & Info Part V (The Countdown)

kinda looks like they are using LABview on their PC, god i hate this software!

Re: 01 thread: F01 / F02 BMW 7er - Spy Pics & Info Part V (The Countdown)

Traffic sign recognition looks excellent. Will the car respond to these if the driver fails to do so? Will it just provide a warning, or take thing further?

hahaha!! I knew that class I took was useful for something. I hate it with a passion too... not as much as MATLAB though

Re: 01 thread: F01 / F02 BMW 7er - Spy Pics & Info Part V (The Countdown)

i'm taking my third labview based class right now, although i do agree on a higher level matlab is unbeatable
