Breaking News: New twin-turbo 5.5l V8 for S63 AMG

Even though it's down on displacement compared to the outgoing 6.2-liter engine, the M 157 generates more power (544 horsepower in 'standard' mode, 571 with the optional performance package) and more torque (586 pound-feet or 660 lb-ft. with the optional performance pack). And despite the change in engine size, the big sedan's S63 moniker will remain.

Incredible! The optional performance package would be my choice. Wonder what this would do for the E63 AMG....wow!

Engine weight is 204kg..that's impressive for a 5.5L TT V8.:bowdown:

900NM and 7G..:icondrool:icondrool:icondrool

To make some comparos:

- F10 M5: 578 hp and 720 NM

- E55 AMG: 571 hp and 900 NM

What are you talking about?? We don't even know about the M1 engine, your M5 numbers are pure speculation.

Can Affalterbach's engineers do no wrong these days? Another superlative achievement - on a par, at the very least, with BMW's N/S63 engine - I'm impressed by how light and compact the engine is relative to its outputs.

I wonder if this is the engine in those SLSs being seen tested alongside Zondas in SA at the moment?

I gather this engine has its origins with the M156 block and is hence a 90 degree V8?

Mega cool.

So far that old article has been completely correct so expect a 707 hp 1200 Nm engine for the V12 replacement. :D

2011 Mercedes-Benz S63 gets smaller but more powerful 5.5-liter biturbo V8

Autoblog: 2011 Mercedes-Benz S63 gets smaller but more powerful 5.5litre/

We're here in Affalterbach, Germany this morning for a Mercedes-Benz AMG tech day ahead of the Geneva Motor Show, and while we have yet to get a tour of the facilities, we already have some news – the 2011 S63 AMG will receive the company's all-new 5.5-liter bi-turbo V8 engine, as well as the SpeedShift MCT seven-speed gearbox already on offer in the E63 and SL63.

MB chairman of the board Volker Mornhinweg has also confirmed to Autoblog that the U.S. market will indeed receive start-stop technology despite the fact that its efficiency gains aren't really recognized by the EPA's fuel economy testing methodology. Even so, the user-defeatable fuel-saving measure ought to pay dividends in city traffic, which is important because cities like Los Angeles and New York are prominent AMG markets.

Despite offering an embarrassment of performance, the S63 will also cut fuel consumption by an astonishing 25 percent, thanks in part to clever programming of its SpeedShift gearbox and a driver-selectable 'Controlled Efficiency' program, an eco-mode that, among other things, instructs the transmission to always start in second gear, shift up as quickly as possible, and remain in higher gears whenever possible. In addition, the Intelligent Generator Management System employed on the E63 is also used to funnel kinetic energy back into the battery, and there is a new generation of cylinder deactivation technology at work as well. All-in, the still-massive motor will turn in an impressive 23.5 miles-per U.S. gallon on the EU cycle and Morninweg pledges that the car will skirt U.S. gas guzzler taxes.

The 'standard' S63 will run to a governed 155 mile-per-hour top end, while the performance package model has been let out to 186 mph. The new car is slated to go on sale in the second half of the year, and the 5.5-liter engine is expected to supplant the 6.2-liter in other AMG offerings over the next several years. We'll see the new engine tomorrow in person at the Geneva Motor Show, where it will reside in the engine bay of a special S63 showcar. The showcar (above) pays tribute to an early AMG-powered 300 SEL that won its class and finished second overall at the 1971 24-hour race in Spa-Francorchamps.

HAHHAA.. wow thats to phat..
ile be back..need to reflect..

Apart from that painful interior and the decals, this S class looks phat. I hope those tire sizes are an indication on the running gear for the performance package version. Finally some rubber in the back that can take the punishment. I am very excited by this engine.

Ok..
So this is fun:)..
I wonder if those dark lights and grill will make it to the Perf package..
And i LOVE the fact that AMG is showing the world.. this grunty engine on a freakin S class.. so unsporty.. but so AMG.. Such a big **** You :D
They dont need to be M..they are unique and special this way.. the way all their customers love.. and they seem to understand it..
I mean ofcourse the colour and the stickers arent the best look..but its obviously a hommage to the 300SEL..
Is this still gonna be named S63 or S55 Bi-Turbo ??
Oh and did someone notice Husseins Exhaust tips?? A proud moment for GCF:D

PS
Love those phat ass tyres and rimms

Wow...I can't believe it....its really going to happen. The turbo + DI revolution has started at Mercedes-Benz. I wonder if the U.S. marketing people will keep the S63 badge. S55 AMG might be seen as a step down by the uninformed, bigger is better crowd.

Now I breathlessly await the new, non-AMG V6s and V8s.

That said I still like n/a engines better. There might be a small rush by buyers for the last of the n/a engined cars.

Mercedes has been building a strong product lineup over the last 3 years and this shows that they are dedicated to maintaining this trend. AMG has been particularly on point for Mercedes. They have managed to successfully shed their image of simply dropping powerful engines into regular Mercedes vehicles and calling it a day. The C63 and E63 are both extremely well-sorted sports sedans on par or better than any offerings from BMW's Motorsports division.

Helping in this turnaround is that fact that I think BMW's recent products have not been particularly strong (X5 & X6 M, F10 5 series, 5 series GT & Z4). While BMW experienced huge growth over the last decade, it has become increasingly apparent that BMW has stretched themselves too thin in an effort to maintain and further increase market share. I can't think of any car in the Motorsport lineup that I would take over today's AMG equivalent. Keep in mind, I currently own an e60 M5.

I would like to avoid turning this thread into a BMW vs Mercedes yelling match so if anyone would like to have a serious discussion about the direction of these brands and their respective performance divisions, I would recommend starting a new thread.

PS I hope the flared fenders make it to the regular production version.

Looks great..Just hate the stickers, but the engine is extremely good for Benz.
