Breaking News: New twin-turbo 5.5l V8 for S63 AMG

Nice compact, simple yet potent powerplant; everything's there as you see it - turbo's, water to air charge cooler, plumbing - the lot.

Good one, AMG.

Those were the Autocar numbers realised a month ago. At theast the PS numer was almost comfirmed by SCOTT (remeber his post saying the F10 M5 would have almost 580hp) and S´pymp (or whatever). So I´ve suposed the numbers are realistic.

Scott knows nothing. And definitely no specific power ratings.

When do you guys think MB will present the W212 E63 turbo engine??? Before, or after the introduction of the new M5???

I'm sure they won't change it until restyling, so 3-4 years to wait

This is the CL that got stuck in snow, no?

I remember the AMS-test of the 2003 S600 Biturbo. With its 500 hp it did 0-200 km/h in 15,2 seconds (with the long-geared 5-speed-automatic). How fast will this be?!

I bet the aftermarket tuners are already frothing at their mouth to get a hold of this monster.

Yep I was thinking the same thing. They're going to tune the hell out of this one, they've been waiting for a FI engine from AMG every since the 6.2 came out and slowed things way down by being n/a.

This short-wheelbase S63 with biturbo V8 (PP, hopefully) and MCT 7sp seems itching to pich a fight with the Panamera Turbo.

Man..that stripped out S-Class looks so cool and wrong.:D

The only thing that can possibly stop them is the torque limit for the gearbox.....for the rest, all bets are on. 800 hp will not be a problem.

I just realized the S 63 that they are talking about, the one in which this engine will make its debut, is the coupe! I hope it's not too drawn-out a spillover to the rest of the models.

Hope all of you have in mind what is comming, this same engine with bigger turbos, 707 hp and 1200 NM of torque.

Knowing Mercedes, they will take their sweet time getting there. They honestly would have no reason to hurry. Probably we will see it in a couple of year's time, a Black Series next SL perhaps.

Also, reason for that Performance Pack must be that, in its stronger form, the engine loses its 'green' credentials. Efficiency must really suffer, so in order to keep the boasting rights, as well as unlock some more profit in the form of premiums, they have now two engine options for the same model.

Now I am very curious whether AMG will have a next V12. It is clear the current one is now outdated and perhaps outclassed. With this new V8, they really do not need it. Question is, if Mercedes designs one, will they follow suit and have their own version? Or are they now, in their new form as a butique automaker, focusing around one engine and various states of tune? Really, with the possibilities of the new V8, is a new V12 superfluous?

I can't see Mercedes without a V12, but AMG might not have one. That I could see.

Then again there is no 2011 SL600 for the U.S. market so who knows, but I doubt it. As long as BMW and Audi have 12-cylinders engines so will Mercedes. I'd bet on a W222 S600, but an AMG version is iffy.

There is no reason for the current SL600 to be on sale. I do not see many SL 600's around, so I doubt that model was too much of a seller to begin with. The new V8 from AMG outpowers and out-torques it, all with a better transmission, lower weight and efficiency.

I can see MB having a V12 only for its regular top of the line. I can see AMG not being tempted by the base V12 to come up with a version of their own. I don't know, this new V8 is just too good!
