Breaking News: New twin-turbo 5.5l V8 for S63 AMG

Mercedes-Benz may have given a hint recently, with the F800 Style, which has a drive unit
consisting of a V6 gasoline engine with an output of 300+ hp with next-generation direct injection.

So what?

A CGI V6 is not going to come close to the BMW twin-turbo inline-6 engine. Enough of that green-shxt. Let's have good powertrains for our Mercs.

Another thing I'd like to point out is that everytime I ask myself if I should trade in the CLS350 for the facelifted CLS or the new E350, I end up objecting myself because there is no reason to. The engines are no different to the pre-facelift CLS and most of the hardwares are pretty much the same as before.

I think Mercedes needs to change their policy of never launching a new engine with a new model. Ask yourself this question, why would you want to trade-in your existing CLS or E when the engine and gearbox are exactly the same as the one found in yours??? Maybe they want to stagger the launch of new engines to maintain the appeal of a 'seasoned' model (i.e. a model that's been on the market for 12-24mths). But this doesnt convince me to wait.

Funny they stubbornly still call it "S 63 AMG". Then again their model designations haven't really matched the engine displacement lately :

55 AMG - actual engine displacement: 5.4 liters
65 AMG - actual engine displacement: 6.0 liters
63 AMG - actual engine displacement: 6.2 liters

Is the S69 right around the corner?

I think the "63" just had too much heritage from the days of the 6.3 for Stuttgart not to use it from a historical marketing perspective. In general though, the numbers indicating engine size on a Mercedes have nearly been eliminated as you noted above. The world market sneered when the US S-Class became the S550 yet ironically it is the correct model number by prior MB methods. I am not sure Mercedes is being stubborn but more likely, unsure and inconsistent in their model designations. In 2000 the S-Coupe became the CL, which in the next few months will once again become the S-Coupe. In a few years we will probably see the model numbers preceed the model letters. Come to think of it, I always did like the way 500SEL looked on the trunk lid.

Oh I doubt they'll go back to 500SEL, way too much confusion now. I used to like how it looked back then too. My favorite was "500E". Most people just have never seen such a badge before.

^made by AMG but based on the upcoming new V8..
Like the old AMG engines..
The 63 engine was made by AMG from scratch ..

After the launch of new A8 W12, I'm sure that Merc will defenitly come up with V12 engine for its next-gen S-Class (W222) too. Being both its rivals have their 12-cylinder engines, I don't think that MB will let their iconic flagship of whole the S600 to be placed below the competition!
