X7 was an idea born from the run away success of the E53 X5 as was X3. So they started to develop a strategy in the late 90's early 2000s. The X3 was the one that made it through. But again a Second phase was put forward with the E70 and again did not reach full conclusion.

But it goes to show patience and allowing the market to flourish even though th...

Yes, I remember this back when someone detailed all of the "E" chassis codes that never made it to fruition. The X7 had been listed on there twice (2 generations worth of being passed over).

Yes that is correct. There was also earlier X4 and X2 reports. Now we are finally getting to see them. But there are a lot of models today that use ideas of concepts conceived in this timeframe.

But there was optimism in this period that allowed creativity of such vehicles such as the CS Concept,A mini-MINI and full ranges of X and Z models to be conceived. Even the E87 1er was developed to sustain sedan and Touring models as well as the Coupe, hatch and Cabrio.

Every decision comes down to the management, bean counters, marketers and the market conditions to determine the right conditions to develop.
Sadly these decisions do alter the strategy.

Yep.
An original BMW idea, Mercedes management had the balls to execute it in the form of a GLS (GL), BMW management vacillated as ever.
Same ridiculous excuse for a management ensured that the CS was killed.

I wouldn't say it was an original BMW idea- Mercedes starting planning for a large 3-row SUV in the late 90's/early 2000's as well. The X164 was locked into its final design by 2002.

I stand to be corrected then.
My understanding was that the X7 or shall we call it a proper seven seater was in the pipeline when the X5 was introduced to the market back in 1999. There was also a experiment with a V12 during the first generation of the X5, the underlying driver been a possible longer wheelbase 7 seater.
BMW management from my understanding as of the time backed out of the idea of a proper 7 seater with the E70, and as a compromise gave us the 7 seater E70 X5 circa 2006.
I believe the GL now called the GLS made its debut circa 2006.
Just what I was told- so I could be wrong, and I am not an insider.

A lot of such wisdom on the internet has stemmed from information provided long ago by Thomas Mueller / Edition Weiss Blau. It's been a bit like chinese whispers ever since. I'm not saying your information is incorrect, however as far as I've researched this would be all I was confident in saying...

The E55 is listed as being a longer E53 X5, and there is an entry for an X7 in 2004 which would have featured an 8 and 12 cylinder engine. The context for a V12 powered X5 E53, was the X5 LM with the V12 from the LMR in it. I do not believe there's evidence of another V12 engined X5. There was an M5 V8 powered RWD X5 E53 prototype tested.

I’ve been waiting for a leak from a magazine or website I’ve never heard that’s located in a country I’d never be able to find, but their time is running out. So, what time is the embargo lifted tomorrow?
