X5 M / X6 M BMW X5 M (Spy pics, Info & Impressions)

The X5 M is the high-performance variant of the X5. In April 2009, the X6 M version was announced, with a 408 kW (547 hp) version of the BMW S63 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 engine. The BMW X5 M and X6 M are the first vehicles from BMW M GmbH to have xDrive all-wheel-drive system and automatic transmissions, and are also crossovers as opposed to passenger cars.

I was checking those pics out on leftlanenews.com, you beat me by a minute!:D

Re: Possible X5 M version sighted

Sorry...I was wondering , if somebody would beat me on these one..
I wanted to start a new tread so badly, at least once ;)

Don't be sorry, being 1st is what it's all about! And considering we have members all over the world, you should be proud of yourself!:eusa_clap :usa7uh:

Re: Possible X5 M version sighted

My first thought was a new X5 IS version. But the exhaust really looks like a M setup. In combination with the X6-style front it looks to me like a X6-M mule in X5-clothes. Just like they did with the first M3 prototypes in sedan form...

Re: Possible X5 M version sighted

Likely not an M car, but rather the rumored 5.4 engine as a "sport". Last model, there were suggestions that the 4.6is and 4.8is were going to receive an M badge, but they determined that an X5 just wasn't M material. I expect the same here, but look forward, nevertheless, to owning and driving this car.

Re: Possible X5 M version sighted

its the turbocharged V8 being tested, my money on that.

EDIT:
Our photographer also reported a very different engine sound on this prototype, which pointed to the likelihood of a V-10 or twin-turbo V8 stuffed under this prototype’s hood.

Re: Possible X5 M version sighted

Did anybody notice that the outer exhaust tips are shorter than the inner exhaust tips. Isn't that a feature of all M cars?

For comparison an M5 mule:

Besides that does the X5 have a wider track. Too much change for the IS IMHO...

Re: Possible X5 M version sighted

This are first testings of V10 S85 engine used on X6 platform.

.....

They are using E70 body since X6 body still isn't in full production, yet only few X6 testing prototypes are cruising around.

BMW used the same method in 135i case: testing N54 engine, brakes, suspension etc in E81 hatch body.

:t-cheers:

BMW X5 M Spotted Again

X plus V = M

We have been aware of a BMW X5 M prototype since it was innitially spotted in the Death Valley in July but news has been sporadic if not completely absent. Multiple rumours about the engines have been surfacing like a twin-turbo V8 (which seems to be finding its way to the next BMW M5). But it is still a safer bet that the V12 engine from BMW's 760i delivering 438 bhp will be powering the X5 M, which would still blow the 272 bhp 3.0 liter in-line six and 355 bhp 4.3 liter V8 found in the regular X5 out of the water. Proof is the 2000 BMW X5 LeMans experimental vehicle which sported the 700 bhp 6.0 liter V12 from the 1999 winning LeMans race car.
And how we can be so sure that this is the BMW X5 M and not just another X5. The two sets of twin exhaust tips are a dead give-away and the front bumper has bigger air-intakes ensuring more efficient colling of both brakes and the engine.

Re: Possible X5 M version sighted

I'm curious... will there even be an X5 4.8iS replacement? or will demand for iS and M variants be filled by the sportier X6?

This really is a BIG step-up by BMW in recent times. They have so many projects in the testing stage. New 7er, X6 still not put into production, F5 LSC, and now the X6-M variant being tested under the guise of the M5 body.

Re: Possible X5 M version sighted

Let's just hope they call it X5 6.0iS and not X5 M! ;)

The 4.4 litre TT V8 will replace the 4.8i X5, and there is a high probability that what we might be looking is the X5 with the TT V8 engine in it.

Re: Possible X5 M version sighted

Not is it uses the 6.0 V12 ;)

Do you mean the Lemans concept V12, or the pictures of what is being tested?
If it is what the pictures are showing, I believe it might be the turbocharged V8- I could be wrong though.

BMW M

BMW M GmbH, formerly known as BMW Motorsport GmbH, is a subsidiary of BMW AG that manufactures high-performance luxury cars. BMW M ("M" for "motorsport") was initially created to facilitate BMW's racing program, which was very successful in the 1960s and 1970s. As time passed, BMW M began to supplement BMW's vehicle portfolio with specially modified higher trim models, for which they are now most known by the general public. These M-badged cars traditionally include modified engines, transmissions, suspensions, interior trims, aerodynamics, and exterior modifications to set them apart from their counterparts. All M models are tested and tuned at BMW's private facility at the Nürburgring racing circuit in Germany.
