M2 BMW M2 [official thread]

The BMW M2 is a high-performance version of the BMW 2 Series automobile developed by BMW's motorsport division, BMW M GmbH. As the 2 Series replaced the 1 Series coupé and convertible models, the first-generation M2 was marketed as the most basic M model in the range. Official website: BMW M

BMW’s potential next big star -the M2 Competition – will arrive in 2018 replacing the current M2 Coupe. As we’ve reported before, the production of the new super sporty, compact Coupe will begin in Summer of 2018, more precisely, around early July. As we’ve seen with more recent BMW launches, the world premiere is likely to be scheduled 2-3 months ahead of the start of production, which will give us a world debut in Spring 2018.

The supped up M2 will also introduce new colors to the lineup. One of them is Silver Hockenheim, while the other is a flashier one – Sunset Orange. The M2 CS will continue to be offered in Alpine White, Black Sapphire, Mineral Grey and Long Beach Blue Metallic.

The legendary N55 3.0 liter TwinTurbo six-cylinder will also be replaced by a detuned S55unit, with the same internal components as the one found in the M3 and M4, but with slightly less power – 405 hp. The engine will be mated to a 7-speed M-DCT transmission or a six-speed manual.

Along with the 405 horsepower, nearly 500 Nm of torque are on the table for the M2 CS, but even more important than the slightly higher peak power is the more aggressive response of the twin-turbocharged straight-six cylinder with 3.0 liter displacement.

While the M2 Competition won’t be artificially limited, the number of units produced will be based on the production capacity and demand. Delivery times will vary from market to market, so it won’t be unusual to see some customers taking delivery in late 2018.

It’s going to be interesting on how they are going to improve on the already fantastic M2 with the CS.

Looks alone will make a huge difference; different (bigger) grille, new bumpers with bigger air inlets and smaller ‘fangs’, M3 mirrors...pfff pretty damned radical afaik!!

This car is going to be glorious in every possible way!!

It had a good front already. hope it doesn't look ridiculous. Not digging the joined grilles so far.

That’s a shock - so will all new competition pack variants (like the M5) be differentiated from their standard M brother?

Of course not. I am very, very jealous :D

But this new version looks pretty damn radical, and @domleo999 raises a good question: maybe the M5 CP has some changes too...

Yes, that's the most worrying part that the "new" M2 Competition is going to have it's own design language to differentiate it from all other cars. So will be so distant from the current M2 to render mine "old" and "cheap" within a few months.

However the current M2 is a great car and I'm definitely looking forward to it.

Congratulations!! You're going to love it. Don't forget the "hack" of turning the DSC off to get a more fruity exhaust.

Not heard of that. Does that need coding?

Cheaper than MP Exhaust I suppose! I think that might just be TOO loud for my clients to appreciate ;)

No. Unless they've changed it then you just simply press the DSC button once. You don't have to press and hold or anything. It's noticeably fruitier, and pops and stuff. The engineers put it in as a "secret". It's not mentioned in the user manual.

To be honest the M2 doesn't need the MP exhaust, IMHO. The M2 sounds great in standard form. Better than the standard M3/M4, and it gets even better when you press the DSC button. I have the MP exhaust on my CP M4, and I think that definitely makes a bigger impact than the M2 (whether it sounds better is subjective), but that costs serious money.

Nice info. I'm not sure the MP Exhaust for the M2 could be classed as cheap, but if you can get some extra oomph at the press of a button might make the argument pointless.

I never changed the exhaust on my 1M either. Liked the sound of that stock too, didn't mind the drone at 7k revs as others did!

2018 BMW M2 Competition: 410 hp and even sharper design

Ahead of its public unveil on April 25, 2018 in Beijing, BMW will give us a quick glimpse of the all-new, and highly awaited BMW M2 Competition. The update for the compact sportsman is quite extensive and undoubtedly justifies the new name, especially since the M2, as we know it today, will cease its production.

From a technical point of view the most important change takes place under the bonnet, where a completely new engine development of the TwinTurbo in-line six-cylinder S55 will be used. The motor variant for the BMW M2 Competition delivers 410 hp and offers more than 500 Newton torque (370 lb-ft). Of course, the engine is equipped with a particulate filter right from the beginning and meets all foreseeable emission requirements in connection with WLTP and RDE.

Due to the increase in output of around 40 hp, the standard sprint will be improved by at least a tenth of a second than the 4.3 seconds in today’s M2 with the 7-speed DCT.

We expect no changes for the top speed, which will be electronically limited to 250 km/h and can be raised by M Driver’s Package to 270 km/h.

The design of the BMW M2 Competition Coupe will also be different from the previous F87 M2. New aprons on the front and rear will ensure an even clearer differentiation of the regular 2 Series models, while the M mirrors will finally appease the M purists.

All of those changes, along with new colors, will commend a higher price for the M2 Competition, which is rumored to be at least 10,000 euros more expensive than the current M2.

BMW M

BMW M GmbH, formerly known as BMW Motorsport GmbH, is a subsidiary of BMW AG that manufactures high-performance luxury cars. BMW M ("M" for "motorsport") was initially created to facilitate BMW's racing program, which was very successful in the 1960s and 1970s. As time passed, BMW M began to supplement BMW's vehicle portfolio with specially modified higher trim models, for which they are now most known by the general public. These M-badged cars traditionally include modified engines, transmissions, suspensions, interior trims, aerodynamics, and exterior modifications to set them apart from their counterparts. All M models are tested and tuned at BMW's private facility at the Nürburgring racing circuit in Germany.
