Concept BMW GINA Light Vision

Future car concepts, design studies, upcoming tech, and what may come next
Re: Officiall: BMW GINA Light Vision

The aeronautical industry has also been exploring this kind of technology for airplane wings that can change their shape and size.

Re: Officiall: BMW GINA Light Vision

While the realization is interesting, there is little new to the concept. M-Benz presented smth similar with its 'liquid metal' based car last year. That one was a pure sci-fi excercise while GINA has clearly a lot more going on in terms of concrete engineering, but still...

I'm with Mr. Mercedes on this one. We will be dead and buried when/if this Gina is on the road. Good luck with meeting crash and safety standards with that technology. Speaking of which, the Gina concept shows BMW to be a technology leader?! Are we not getting carried away here, Rob? I thought the future of automobile is the fuel cell, smth BMW has shown very little about.

As for the styling, I see lots of angles here. Inspired by the GLK ENI? Is this the first conceptual revision of the styling?

Re: Officiall: BMW GINA Light Vision

No offence but am i the only 1 who thinks it's ugly?(havent seen d video tho). The technology certainly is intriguing tho... sounds brilliant. But at d mo i wont get over excited, i'll see it as it is... a 'concept'.

In any case, interesting work from BMW

Re: Officiall: BMW GINA Light Vision

^^ Oh... and ye i kinda suspected Rob was getting up to his 'usual' antics with that one ^ Dorkollaku. LOL. No offence Rob :D :usa7uh:

Well I can imagine that vehicles with "morphing" aerofoils and even slightly changing shape to improve aerodynamics are not too far away -- we already can see the beginnings of this technology in production.

What did I do? :t-hands::)

The future of the automotive industry lies in someone figuring out to split water molecules and using the product protons as an energy source. This will lead to the use of solar panels and water as a fuel possible fuel to running completely emission free vehicles i.e. the main by-product is oxygen.

Don't believe me. It is happening all around the world right now. A little phenomena known as photosynthesis. It is how plants make glucose that is used as their primary power source.

Once we crack the splitting water case then the automotive industry will be at its destination...

Re: Officiall: BMW GINA Light Vision

In order to be a leader, you need to have followers. I sure hope no one follows the direction BMW is taking with this hideous contraption.

In terms of design it must be very obvious to anyone that BMW has a lot of followers. This is a pure study of what may be done, bold new steps and a great opportunity to show the world design cues of both the new Z4 and the Z8 in one car.

Flame surfacing is here to stay. Really looking forward to the new Z4 which now has a great chance to get a good looking mature flame surface with cutting edge driving dynamics.

Angles are part of flame surfacing. They have always been.
Talking about sharp curvy fluent creases separating concave surfaces here.
And mix of concave / convex surfaces. That's the essence flame surfacing. As they are smooth panels / surfaces with fluent creases.

Completely different of rectangular / boxy nature of eg. GLK. Not to mention bloated rectangular surfaces. Ouch!

Re: Officiall: BMW GINA Light Vision

The car looks alright. Not as impressive as I anticipated. At least we get a hint of what the new Z4 is going to look like.

The GLK is much more aggressive. It reminds me of the architecture of Rem Koolhaas.

BMW's styling is more organic ...it does have incongruous lines ...but they almost appear like a skeleton beneath a skin.

Re: Officiall: BMW GINA Light Vision

I'm looking at this car from both an engineering and design standpoint.

In terms of engineering, it's groungbreaking. Such technology opens up possibilities to improving aerodynamics right through to improving production costs and efficiency. Do not underestimate the safety of this car- a car's torsional rigidity comes from the it's structure.

In terms of design, some elements are beautiful and some need to to getting used to. But most importantly, the design has qualities that are beyond the current trends and really push the boundries of automotive design.

For a concept car such as this, that really has meaning and is groundbreaking in all respects, i salute BMW, it's brilliant engineers and Chris Bangle.

Re: Officiall: BMW GINA Light Vision

besides the skin the car is totally backwards for BMW design-wise. The overall look has been here for ages. Trunk treatment screams 6-series and the character- and doorlines are purely Z4. Even the wheels are (almost) the same, as can be seen here:

Re: Officiall: BMW GINA Light Vision

Why do so many of you guys only understand "design" as being solely about its styling?

Design encompasses far more than just styling -- this vehicle has been entirely conceived to exploit the characteristics of this skin -- I don't think anyone is treating this as a styling forecast -- it is a materials/technology design exercise.

It is a concept vehicle for heaven's sake -- this is really an example for designers ...not consumers.

No production BMW is going to look like this -- so you don't need to lose any sleep over it.

Re: Officiall: BMW GINA Light Vision

I just read the article on auto-motor-sport.de BMW GINA: Stoff zum Träumen Auto + Produkte bei auto motor und sportwhere they mention, that this is in fackt an "old" concept that was even developed before the current Z4.
There are a few hints that support this statement:
1. the interior design looks a bit "dated" and pretty similar to the one in the X-Coupe-Concept
e9bbc9be7d5ee5f8dae0dbf0ce7a967f.webp

2. the outside design, especially the side-one is very similar to the one on the current Z4

Take a good look at the sharp line the rocker panel forms. On the current Z4 (and the 1er) it is very strong, while i don´t think well see that one on the next Z4

3. They did not (at least not until now) mention anything about the drivetrain etc.

But nevertheless I like the design and the idea beneith it. And I don´t worry about the stiffness and the crash-performance. The outside panels have very little support for the strukture...
