After looking, well i think the only thing that is ruining the car is the greenhouse. Otherwise individual design elements, including the front and the rear, imo is good.
The front, i think you really can't tell it is not a sedan or a coupe if you just look at the front, it is so low and flat, there is absolutely no problems with it imo. About the joint headlights/grille, come on, i think this one is even better executed than the F30, and this is simply an interpretation of the Vision ED, the only difference is that the VED doesn't have a lens covering up its pair of angel eyes, and i would bet my 2c that some model in the next generation will lose the lens and be more VED-like. This isn't really a mistake is it? It's just going back, i mean for example the E30 and more recent E34, they had 2 circular headlights on each side without a lens covering them up, and imo the VED is a modern interpretation of that. So i think, the headlights lens joining the grille thing is an interim thing to bridge the old and the Vision. I think it's pretty deliberate and obvious, this generation, including the F10, you can tell they want to make the front end very horizontal and flat, a big departure from the E60/E90 when that traditional BMW design language seemed to have departed.
Then looking at the rear alone, you know for a MPV or a mini MPV to have a tail looking like this it's pretty spectacular.
So what's the problem? i think the front end is shouting it doesn't want its body, the front end is slick enough to be a sedan, and indeed I really honestly think that the F30 should have this front, it looks more in-line with the E46 and E90, while the current more extreme F30 front, would suit this thing more. I don't know, BMW made the 5GT having a high and prominent front, it looks big, but this one, while it looks good and sporty, nothing from the front tells you that this is not a sedan, in other words it doesn't match up well. The F30's front, with some fine tuning tweaks, should be aggressive enough for the F32.
Come on the F20 is way uglier, that front end is really disgusting. Nothing compares to the all time special F20 for now. Out of topic but don't you guys really think BMW deliberately dumbs down the 1er all the time? E.g. the E87 was great, but look at the interior materials given to it pre FL, hard plastic, the passenger side glovebox was not even mechanical, but was connected with some bandage like piece of cloth, and they could've easily made the whole car looked more mature, just look at what Audi does with the A3. Fact was the E87 drove better than the E90, and truth is that there are so many shared parts between the 1 and the 3, and therefore they have to dumb down the much cheaper 1series to make it look junior/more cheap than its bigger brother. This generation, the F20 has a reasonable interior and therefore, it cannot have a decent exterior and here we go, the ugliest car. I can't think of any other reason.
