Funny the different reaction you get between forum, over here the idea that BMW might be switching to a v6 with the next M3 is met with not that much animosity, yet when I claimed this possibility months ago the reaction was truly unbelievable, my words were classed as blasphemy. Clearly a more educated bunch here.

it's not going to happen though

who cares what engine it has as long as its considerably quicker and lighter than the current lard ass m3

TopSpeed have done a rendering and an on-page comparison with the forthcoming "other" Gran Finale Audi RS 3 , which if rumours are true to what I am hearing and livid about that a similar introduction in the vein of the 1M Coupe is due within the next two months.

Not an exact rendering. There are areas that are way off...
Such as for now ignore the Non-M aerodynamics - M now features
U-shaped intakes with M-Sport featuring V-shaped intakes.

So we have a couple of days with no news, let me start about the name game of this car again:

Legendary, one of the more important cars in history, the BMW 328:

328i however is one of the most common names now in the BMW line up, with cars from the E36 line, E46 line and E90 line all featuring this iconic name....

I say, do the same again with the M1. The old M1 isn't even half as special as the 328.

I think BMW has a right to respect historically important nameplates. They've done it with the Z8 and the 1M isn't much different. It's really not that big of a deal.

I am so happy: I cannot wait for the new 1M Coupé (E82), 3MCoupé (F32), 5M Sedan (F10) and 6M Coupé (F12) !

360 PS, 450 Nm, 1500 kg.

With tune: 450 PS, 600 Nm.

So only under 100kgs lighter than the current 135i?

With a bit of tweak...the 135i can easily get to 380hp.

Are you sure the weight will be 1.5 ton?

I was hoping for around 1.300kgs...that's a superlight construction.

1300 kg?????? This is completely impossible, unless stripped out and only two Recaro Pole Position CF seats. The lightest Porsche, Boxter Spyder weighs 1275 kg (DIN). If the M1 GTS weighs 1380 kg (DIN) it will already be the very nice. But I would say 1450 kg (EG). It is a very good think the M1 will be lighter than 135i, usually M cars were never lighter than the AG cars, except CSL and GTS. Remember the M1 is not an 135i CSL, so no reason for it to be lighter, yet it will be, thanks M. So M1 weighs 1500 kg (EG), 1425 kg (DIN).

360 PS, 450 Nm, 1500 kg.

With tune: 450 PS, 600 Nm.

The 135i M/Sport weighs 1560Kg, that's without beefed up brakes, LSD and other choice items that the 1M will have, so I doubt it will achieve your estimates of 1500kgs based on what the M3 is compared to the next closest 3er.

Output figures are probably OK but again I think they are at the upper end of what it will possibly have. I reckon 350PS and 420~430Nm with an overboost option is more likely.

Will it be quick? YES
Will it handle well/better than the M3? YES
Will it be more of a hoot to drive? YES

Albert Biermann, the man behind its development and my chauffeur, isn’t giving too much away. About all he’s prepared to say right now is that the M Coupé will boast somewhere in the region of 350bhp in production guise — around 50bhp more than the 135i upon which it is based. The prototype we rode in had a standard six-speed manual gearbox, although a seven-speed dual-clutch ’box will also be offered. Transferring drive to the road is a lightly tweaked version of the M3’s M differential.

With a kerb weight that, Biermann says, undercuts the 135i’s 1455kg and closely stacked ratios, acceleration is not too far from the supercar league. Through the gears, and especially in the mid-range, it feels particularly strong. A torque figure beyond the existing M3’s helps it to romp out of corners with great enthusiasm. From what I could ascertain, the target 0-62mph time of 5.0sec is well within reach, placing it 0.3sec inside that quoted for the 135i.

M division has focused much of its attention on the chassis, as evidenced by its wider tracks and lower ride height. Around Ascari, the 1-series M Coupé feels every bit as agile as the standard M3.

In fact, its compactness and lower weight even give it the edge in certain sections of the 3.4-mile circuit. Its comparative lack of weight means roll angles are kept to a minimum, although the damping on the prototype was clearly quite stiff.

read people, read

The official weight of the 135i isn't 1455kg, it's 1560kg. Where did they get this figure from?
