Haven't we simply seen the 1M's new engine in the Z4 35iS? Or are we all still holding out for a cross-flowed twin-scroll, twin-turbo unit?
That might very well be the case (despite Scott's comments below).

May be South can confirm this but I am pretty sure that Scott stated either here or on 1addicts.com that the 1M and F30 M3 would be using the same basic engine. If true then surely BMW can stand the development costs of a completely new engine when it's to be used on two models which combined would account for a sizable amount of sales.
Exactly, here's Scott's comment from 1addicts:

That would open up for a whole different story. I wonder if BMW would let the 1M get the engine first?
I seriously doubt that too.

Then how can the M1 engine be the N54 engine from the Z4 sDrive35is, if it has redline at 7.500 rpm? Again, why are they then so long testing the engine if it is the same as the one in the Z4?
I don't believe the redline's at 7,500 rpm. The interior shots clearly show the red starting at 7.000rpm.

Best regards,
south

I've just posted but then it disappeared, so I can't be bothered to type it out again.

Sunny. The engine in the 1M and it's impact on the M brand image is a pertinent one. I'll continue to talk about that. You can continue to comment on other people if you like.

No it is not about the engine in 1M and it's impact on the M brand, cause I am pretty sure at this point we don't know what is the engine in 1M (beyond that it is a 6 cylinder turbo engine). It is about imagining what it is and it's imaginary impact on the image of the brand. You can do that to pretty much any thread about any future car - imagine what it will have and discuss it's impact on the brand. Case in point, the M5 thread where instead of the engine it is the transmission.

And no my comment was not meant to stop you or anyone else, it is me making snide remarks for my own kicks.

Is a high-rev, turbo I6 is possible...?

M

Possible, yes, but why? When it is easier/cheaper to make more power with a turbo engine by just increasing the boost. With NA engine, that is not an option, so you either have to increase displacement or make the engine rev higher. (Of course I am glossing over all the other little tricks to make an engine make more power liking making the engine breath better, reducing friction, making the internals lighter etc).

yes it is, but it will have to be a twin turbo to have both low down torque and it then holding that power all the way up to a higher rev range.

One turbo cant do both low down responsive and silly high end response easily.

I know but I was just guessing as such a configuration in order to preserve some of the M "feel" and characteristics.

I wonder how many testmule's they have?

Seems to be at least four black ones M-SL-4674, M-SL-4675, M-SL-4677 and M-RK-4671 (M-Power Teaser) and the Sedona red one M-RB-4592 (First 1M mule spotted).

I suppose each one has different attributes/engines/setups?

Scott, any info?

Mark.

We are hearing a six-cylinder engine also for next M3...

I WILL be a 6-cylinder engine, as the new M5 will have 8. Do you know if the new M3 will have inally a V6, or I6?.

I have a strange feeling that M3 will have a chopped M5 engine. Meaning V6 :)

Regards

Funny the different reaction you get between forum, over here the idea that BMW might be switching to a v6 with the next M3 is met with not that much animosity, yet when I claimed this possibility months ago the reaction was truly unbelievable, my words were classed as blasphemy. Clearly a more educated bunch here.

IF BMW ///M and BMW Group has decided on a V6 TT for the next M3, this will be the most potent and technological advanced V6 engine in it's class. It will be a definite award winner.

I still believe and hope it will be an I6 - although as said above ^ ....if it's a V6 it will be something so unique with kw & nm - power delivery and efficiency only BMW could have pulled it off.;)

If BMW M engines were "better" than Mercedes AMG and Audi RS engines, it is because they were different. What will make the M 3.3l V6 TT better than the AMG 3.5l V6 BT or RS 3.0l V6 B-T? All will be V6 and with 2 turbos.

I struggle to understand how your mind works and comes to some of your opinions.
