I think there is an error in displaying it as "suffering from a problem" IMO
1- They sell more than ever
2- They get more profit than ever
3- They are immune to EV demand fluctuations (it's happening right now), thanks to their manufacturing flexibility.
2- In the comparisons they are the same or even better most of the times than the "dedicated"
3- Ergo, I don't distinguish a palpable problem or suffering, since even internet critics have done nothing more than benefit them by putting them on everyone's lips.
*Some don't like them? it is relative since sales say otherwise, it is an era where it is the calculated way forward.
Im talking about proportions specifically.

How could you know that the cars with the shared platform are a sales success? It's the ICE versions that are f#cked up. The 7 series has absolutely dismal sales almost an year and a half after its launch. The 5er has a better chances due to the huge price increase of the E class and the postponed new version of the A6 but still it won't sale IMO as good as its predecessor.
Sale success is due to China and the SUVs. The BMW sedans (of course G20 not included) are a disaster in the looks department.

The E-class has way better proportions. There is plenty of room for improvement for the front and rear graphics, but the overall platform looks pretty fantastic.

Tweaks to improve the E. A slightly more pronounced duck-tail on the rear like the old S-class coupe and a bit more mass in the shoulders and it'll look much more muscular while retaining the elegance. Main change would be the front end. If they want to integrate the grille with the headlights take notes from the Arteon and actually have some air-channels. If not, just go back to separated headlights and grille.

Tweaks to improve the 5er. Get rid of the shiny black plastic on the mid-rear 3/4s its hideous. You can't really lower it due to the platform demands, but a major improvement would be to shrink that horrible grille, because the headlights look ok, but bring back the proper angel eyes pls. Also for whatever reason the Hoffmeister kink has been made too busy. The E90, F10 and F90/G30 interpretation was much more elegant and using that here would just smooth out the shoulder that much more.

Some differences highlighting the details in the interior quality impressions:

1) Rear armrest cupholders:

Mercedes W214 E-class - retractable from inside armrest.

BMW G60 5-series - not covered and on top of armrest. Looks way cheaper.

2) Rear Climate Controls and Vents/Seat backs:

Mercedes W214 E-class - Has full 4 zone climate control with separation for temperature control, fan speed and air distribution. Air vents have some chrome inserts. Front Seat backs have airplane style storage pull downs.

The rear armrest of the G60 is embarrassing, but I suppose it shouldn't look as bad in person as in the photo, in any case as a post in the Scenic thread, the Renault version is incredibly much prettier and more luxurious than the one of these two Merc and bmw

Only way to find out which one has better quality is by sitting in both and finding out yourself. And none of us here have done so.

IMO what Rolf did is pointing out some personal tidbits, which is fine but hardly representative. I disagree with some even. For instance, that rear cupholder in the Mercedes looks ridiculously flimsy and is bound to break off/malfunction along the line. Two kids on the backseat having a little party is likely all it takes.

For the first time, there is a gap between the E class and the 5 series in terms of design. Class E is on the winning side.
If you have to clarify it, it shouldn't be so clear...

Taking advantage of these new photos of the 5 series, I wanted to make the comparison with some photos of the E-Class that were up to par but I couldn't find any that reached the heels, so be my guess.

I like both cars for different reasons:

Front: 5
Side profile an 3/4 view: E
Rear: 5
Interior design: E
Interior quality: 5
ICE: E
BEV: 5

It’s going to be interesting to see what the comparison tests reveal. I have zero confidence in MB’s interior quality. The EQ line up is a disaster on that regard.

I don’t feel the interior pics of the G60 show an improvement in terms of fit and finish neither. Yet some early reviews are prasing the interior quality.

As far as the interior layout… I might like the BMW right now. Looks more technical.

Jurnos are absolutely clueless about Interior quality. The C garnered so much praise despite its pathetic lower door and lower dash plastics.

I had a ride in an EQE on my way to the airportz courtesy of Emirates, and the interior experience was ruined entirely by the shitty quality door cards. An ICE W213 E feels considerably more premium, and even that is no high benchmark.

Based on recent experience, for interior quality of both cars to be equal, BMW would need to lower its standards by quite a large margin. And MB to raise them even more.

I've sat in the E class and quality is the same as previous model not great/not bad but the dash really lifts up the interior, looks better than S class.

Sales is one metric though? An important and an imposing one but one only.

People can't give you Wikipedia explanations for why they don't like something. They don't have to, there's no requirement.

There's a SP car and I thinks it's bloody hideous. Is what it is. I don't know, that's my take, generally I stay out of it.

Unless it's, well something French.🙂

The i4/4 series is selling more than ever, even more than the 3 series
X3/iX3 pump up
X1/iX1 pump up
Sedans like the 5 don't even start yet and the 7 will be seen at the end of this year, so am I missing any?

I think it's "the" metric, the rest is romanticism

I don't know that it is an SP car
