5 Series (G30/G31/G38) BMW 5 Series (G30/31/32) Spy Pics & Info Discussion

The BMW G30/G31/G38 is the seventh generation of the 5 Series. Officially announced in October 2016, sales began in February 2017. Production years: November 2016-2023. Body styles included: 4-door sedan/saloon (G30), 5-door wagon/estate (G31), and 4-door long-wheelbase saloon (G38).
It's getting interesting to see how BMW will transform it into the production.

Brief OT, since many commented on the black keys in the G30: I designed a car myself this year, and used black steel surfaces for those areas where lately fake alu has become standard (instr. cluster, steering wheel, hvec, seat controls, central knob etc.). Reactions were pretty positive, maybe some OEM should try that out :).

....
Btw, @Busty do you know if there is another upcoming interior in the segment as good looking as this one? I am thinking in the A6, A7 or even the long rumored Pajun....

Personally, I have only seen the A8 interior. Of A6/7, I have seen sketches and know some folks who were presented those vehicles on management days. Based on that, I think the D5 is a good indication of what's to come. And I liked that pretty much. It comes across rather cold and high-tech, and bears fundamental similarities with the Prologue (two touchscreens in the middle with very crisp graphics and a cool control slider, another on the driver side for lighting functions, use of matte wood). As said, it's cool and classy. As a point of reference, take this: I don't like the latest Audi interiors (Q7, A4/5). But there is basically no interior in a production car that knocks me off my feet.

OT: The basic MMI concept as outlined above will be adapted for all Audis. In the A1, for instance, with only one screen. Quite troublesome in terms of coherence.

Is that the 'official' word used by the beancounters/management..?

Yes. Hear that quite often.
I guess that means it's official.

Didn't @Busty said the design would be quite different from the MB approach?

Yes, that is what I heard.
Thing is: most users adapt to their system. If they like the overall car, they will mostly also like their HMI best and prefer it as compared to other solutions. (In other words: Command will never convince @klier, iDrive will never be @Mick Briesgau's favorite). So, first rule: stick with your paradigm, or your customers will be pissed.
Second rule: If you change your paradigm, don't dublicate! It will never be the same as the original.
Third rule: If you change your paradigm, be radical. Otherwise, people will expect a similar logic as before when, instead, there are new interaction rules to be learned. By obviously changing the layout, re-learning is facilitated.
This is what should and probably will happen in BMW's next steps.

BMW iDrive is the pinnacle of integrated interfaces found in an automobile. Therefore logic applies that they maintain a progressive outlook on the interface itself as they have the developments of Touch interfaces and Gesture control at BMW.
The layout of the interface is also best for ergonomic and haptic reasons. I would not see a general change to mimic an interface judged as one of the most complex and un-intuitive in the industry.

As the BMW 7er uses premium switchgear which is actual aluminium with laser etched iconography.
They have investigated with BMW Individual to evaluate a ceramic finish to match the ceramic option within the Gearstick and iDrive but also. Aluminium with a black finish. Similar to a high end Hi-Fi or TV. Which with the Orange lighting when in full illumination adds a very dramatic look.
Pre-orders for the new M760Li are running at a very high ratio of Individual against standard.

Woah, I am really in love with what I am seeing. This is absolutely fantastic. We are of course seeing the car in its nice suit (M Pack), but everything looks so good.

I do dislike the interior color combination, though.

From what I have heard for US buyers; this car will still be reasonably affordable; unlike the E class which has been priced out of the market with even the basic upgrades.

So I've got the new Auto Motor und Sport already. Some infos: (Pics are the same studio shots as the leaked ones, plus some other)
