Vs Autozeitung: BMW 7 vs Audi A8 Vs Mercedes S

If that's the case then why u so sure it won't beat the 7er then in that department:rolleyes:

Because the fuel economy could also be worse than the 730d depending on how much the higher weight of the S-Class (compared to W212) affects it.

If they really wanted to beat 730d in fuel economy, they should use the Bluetec version (used in E 350 Bluetec) which probably would be less thirsty but it comes with a downside as it only has 155 kW. ;):D

But Just_me is right, it's fairly pointless to speculate how the cars would score if they had this engine or that engine.

It's not a matter of if but when, which is pretty soon:rolleyes:

And how does that affect this particular test? Answer: in no way. ;)

You know I can say I'm certain BMW will soon introduce the 735d (or 740d or whatever they'll call it) which will surely be more fuel efficient than S 420 CDI while still offering similar performance. See the uselessness in such speculation? It doesn't matter yet. ;)

The difference is that engine u r imagining it doesn't exist but the engine i'm talking about does exist and will be offered for the S pretty soon, see the the point?

Are you sure? ;)

E 350 CDI / 730d / S 320 CDI

Power: 170 kW / 180 kW / 173 kW
Torque: 540 Nm / 540 Nm / 540 Nm
Consumption (Urban): 8,9-9,4 / 9,5 / 10,4-10,6
Consumption (Highway): 5,5-5,8 / 5,9 / 5,9
Consumption (Combined): 6,8-7,1 / 7,2 / 7,6

Note: E 350 CDI has less power than S 320 CDI.
S-Class is heavier than E-Class so naturally the consumption figures will be a bit higher if the S-Class gets the 350 CDI engine.

The E 350 I am sure weighs less than the S320, so you need to factor that into the numbers you are presenting.

My friend, I hate to reveal the secret to you: the(35d) engine does exist.

My friend, let me bring it to ur attention..the imaginary engine was the V8 diesel.

I am pretty sure bmer was talking about the 6 cylinder 35d engine that does exist when he talked about 735d not some imaginary v8 diesel.

What Tarek said in another thread. "Total fanboy talk". thats whats going on right now :D

And when is someone going to actually tell us what they said?

M

Plus the fact that it's engine is about 5 years old.

Yes, the engine is just shy of a decade old, but that is nothing comapred to the design. I mean, the car in this test was very much designed in the late 80's and introduced in the Audi 100 C4.

My German is limited but lets give it a try...

The question the writers starts with; Can you enjoy a luxury diesel?

BMW: In almost every criteria the 7er is hard to beat. It responds better to the throttle, it runs very quiet and its very agile, almost like a smaller car. Good fuel consumption - best in test.

MB: S-class feels heavier. They mentioned something about the gearbox dont know exact what they mean but it is a complaint. At traffic lights S-class dont move as easy as A8 or 7-series. The engine is effective but not as good as the engine in 730d.

Audi: Weight and Quattro ruin the fuel consumption.

Thats about it, its not a huge test but to answer the question, yes you can enjoy a luxury diesel.

Well honestly, the 350cdi is hardly a dramatic improvement over the 320cdi...
The name change is one of the biggest mods it seems :D

It's just a revision of the existing engine isn't it and not a complete new generation like the 4 cylinders right?

^^ Yes it's a revision, and not a very big one. I'm quite sure the displacement was not increased. It's pretty much the same engine, only with some improvements to be cleaner/more economic.

Tarek: As chonkoa & Sunny already pointed out I was talking about an engine that actually does exist. It's a 3.0-liter TT I6 that currently produces 210 kW (used in 335d, 535d, X5 & X6). For the 735d it's likely to get a power boost: http://www.germancarforum.com/7-series/25193-official-new-bmw-7-series-47.html#post320179

Then there's a 740D in his first post if he wasn't talking about an imaginary V8 diesel,anyway...:D

Well, in the BMW case we know what engine will be used but not what it will be called (735d/740d(may use different maps or tuning and change the name)) and in the Mercedes case we know what the engne will be called but not so much what it is all about.

So, no reference to a V8 diesel as far as I can see.
