The S class looks bespoke because it's a new design direction. It will soon loose that because every new MB will mimic it and use parts of it. The F01 was just as bespoke when it first came out, since everything was new and not seen before in any other Bimmer.
Also, the S class is on a modular platform and will soon even have modular engines, so there is absolutely nothing bespoke there either.

Simply put, the S class is just another luxury sedan from Germany. It has the most history sure, not denying that. But the current A8 and 7er already do a fine job competing with it given their age. Don't let the MB fans fool you, S class is not the second coming of Christ.

Also, can't wait for all the dislikes and disagrees. Bring it on.
well it may be, but f01 followed x5's design didnt it? and s class looks wayy more different from other merc cars, then 7er when it was released.
F01 has been selling more than W221 in some markets, and when the new 7er comes it will again overtake the S class in some (important) markets. Worldwide, I don't think the numbers are far off from eachother for W221 and F01...
Also, you keep talking about development costs, so do you have any numbers?

ofcourse not, it was just an assumption, and i stated that this kind of information would be interesting. But worldwide i believe S sells double what 7er sells?

No the S Class is not based on a Modular platform in fact the W222 is based on a modified version of the W221 platform, it is only for S Class vehicles. See below.

BTW given your often stated dislike for for MB why don't you change your name from Klier to KA-LIER it would be more appropriate.

There has been some conjecture as to what platform is the new S Class based on, is it on an the new MRA architecture or on a modified version of the W221 platform. It appears that the new S Class is not based on the new MRA architecture but is instead based on a modified W221 platform. The reason being that in the RHD markets the W222 is only available in RWD and AWD is not available. With the MRA architecture vehicles are available in AWD versions for the LHD and the RHD markets for example the upcoming GLK.

Furthermore here is a review of the new S Class which states:

"All non-AMG variants use Mercedes’ own 7G-TRONIC seven-speed automatic transmission to drive (in right-hand drive versions) the rear wheels only. Although all-wheel drive 4MATIC versions of standard and AMG S-Class models are offered in left-hand drive markets, that option will not be available Down Under until an all-new S-Class platform is produced… Don’t hold your breath..."

Again not saying that it is good or bad that it is not based on the new MRA, just clarifying some confusion as to exactly what platform it is based on.

so the rwd bmw lost 50 or 60 points in slalom und traktion? who wouldve thought so... do they know that awd version exists?

anyway, things here are pretty clear (to a point), no need for numbers - panamera is out for being out of place here (which is not necessarily a bad thing) and not being 8cyl (personally, I dont care much for non 8 pot panamera, especially when I factor in the price in relation to the others), followed by audi a8 (which is very very good car but it would be much more desirable if there was no any other audi).

now, bmw and mercedes. bmw is old but I like how it looks. mercedes is a new car and I respect it tremendously but it leaves me (relatively) cold. s class simply is a better car, bmw I want more. I dont know.

Wait, so according to you, Klier is a "lier" cause he either dislikes Mercedes or cause he doesn't know what platform the S class is on? I think you should change your name from Smitheee to HAVE-NO-f#ckING-PERSPECTIVE. It would be more appropriate.

What a childish reaction. No I did not call him a LIAR, LIAR is spelt LIAR. I said he should change his name from Klier to KA-lier. There was a member here called KA who ranted on against Mercedes, so it is merely a play on words, Klier to KA-lier.

You need to invest in a dictionary.

Yes, you are right, that was unnecessary overreaction on my part if it was indeed a play on KA's name. My apologies.

Hmm interesting.. Klier.. KA? Lier? Liar? plot thickens..

The development cost of the W222 S-Class was right in the neighborhood of $5 to $6Billion (USD) if I remember correctly.
It can be found in the S-Class thread.

But... I'd rather be called a liar instead of K-A :(

Also, I don't see the 'hate' part of me assuming the new S was on a modular platform? There's nothing wrong with that if it were.

Can't one of the sales numbers junkies find the lifetime numbers for W221 and F01 (so far as it's still on sale)?

Mercedes has been trouncing the comfort category. Just as it should. So much for that initial BS test by Auto Bild that intimated the ride quality was not up to scratch. :poop:

Not only is the A8 the quickest but it uses the least fuel despite being AWD which in theory should go against it.

BTW there's no denying the S-class is beautifully built but personally it's got the least appealing dash by a country mile.:yuck:
