A-Class 2018 Mercedes-Benz A-Class spy shots and rumors

The Mercedes-Benz A-Class is a car manufactured by Mercedes-Benz. It has been marketed across generations as a front-engine, front-wheel drive, five-passenger, five-door hatchback, with a three-door hatchback offered for the second generation, as well as a saloon version for the fourth.

It seems like MB is going back to their design language from the early 2000, pure clean surfaces with great proportions. I actually quite like the current design direction, it doesn't work well on the A,B and possibly the CLA because the cars are too small to have enough space for all the lines and crease to develop and resolve, however on the C and up and on the coups it does add to the sense of dynamism

The first real test will be the CLE. It is a large car and less creases should work on the CLE is they are expecting this new theme to work on the S-Class as well.

For sure, except it doesn't count for the new A class because quite simply it's FWD so it does not have great proportions.

I hope MB designers and engineers have taken some note of the Audi A3 hatch and sedan, it is possible to make a decent looking FWD hatch and sedan.

It's quite exciting to see MB is already on the ball previewing a new direction for the compact class..and the show car model is looking pretty nice however even in the sculpture, the relatively large greenhouse and weird transition from C-pillar to the tail is apparent though..:rolleyes.doodle:

I think it is a move in the right direction.

Hope they take care of the interior quality as well. The current FWD MB interiors are quite behind those from VAG and RWD BMWs.

The only thing I'm not so keen on, is how MB is using the compact class as a medium to launch the new design idioms, like they mentioned in the press release of the current A class being the first to receive the sensual purity idiom...it should be the opposite way round, with the bigger models being first..

I definitely agree with decent looking, the A3 is far from offensive. But great looking imo is a different thing.

So Alfa is going to be the only one with an RWD hatch in a couple of years?
Very sad, both the Benz and BMW should have been RWD. But then again, when cars are electric it's all the same, AWD.

I like the current A-class styling and think it's one of the best looking hatches in its segment. The only gripes I have is with its interior which is very cramped in the back seat and has seats with very short squabs. The rear visibility and boot space is also not great. If they fix these things and also improve the interior look and quality and have a much better looking infotainment screen then the car will be a very good deal maker.

I hope they do not commit the HUGE mistake of extending the glasshouse beyond the rear door. That has ruined several side profiles of new generation cars comapred to their predecessors. The most recent examples being the Jaguar XF and VW CC.

The Panamerica grille may be reserved for the AMG models writes Car Design News. :)

Mercedes-Benz is to move further towards minimalism: its 'Aesthetics A' sculpture, announced late last week, previews an update in its design language for smaller cars and reworks the principal design elements for its upcoming compact-class cars.

Immediately apparent is the architecture of the sculpture, a three-box form. While recent Mercedes concept cars have taken monoform shapes, Daimler notes that outside of Europe, the classic saloon is very much in demand in the compact sector, and at the Detroit motor show, chairman Dr Dieter Zetsche hinted at a new four-door sedan.

Aesthetics A, the latest of a series of 'Aesthetics' sculptures since 2010, shows simplified massing and character lines. Mercedes notes that this is an advancement of the 'Sensual Purity' design language, distilling automotive forms down to a pure expressive essence unencumbered by extraneous character lines. And, indeed, a single character line forms a strong shoulder just below the glasshouse and across the top of the wheels, drawing the eye horizontally across the surface of the car, increasing its apparent length.

The mass of the body is simple as well, with breaks in the surface reduced and broadened into sweeping, angled surfaces that communicate the essential sculptural quality and proportions of the car, emphasised by the resulting light-and-shadow contouring.

One detail revealed on the otherwise conceptual model is the so-called 'Panamericana' grille treatment with its vertical slats, perhaps therefore to be adopted by upcoming AMG variants of the new A- and B-Class. And its red body finish heralds 'a new signature Mercedes-Benz colour', thought to be expressive, confident and underscoring 'the sensuality and emotion of the sculpture'.

Gorden Wagener, Mercedes-Benz’s chief design officer, commented: “Form and body are what remain when creases and lines are reduced to the extreme. We have the courage to apply this purism. In combination with sensual surface design, the upcoming generation of the compact class has the potential to herald a new design era. Design is also the art of omission: the days of creases are over."

Agree. Good thing the Aesthetics S pioneered some of the concepts, though? :)

A fresh batch of spy shots is also providing a first glimpse of the interior cabin.
Work on the all-new, fourth generation Mercedes-Benz A-Class continues, as spy photographers have managed to take shots of a prototype, undergoing cold winter tests in Sweden. The test drivers of this car have decided to take a short break for some shopping, giving our spies the chance to spend some time around the vehicle taking photos of the exterior and interior.

The new A-Class is finally shedding the heavy disguise which is replaced by less obtrusive coverings. The camouflaged foil is now giving us a better look at the overall shape of the vehicle, which won’t change that much compared to the current model. The vehicle will be slightly bigger than its predecessor, which will result in a roomier cabin with more legroom and a bigger trunk. What’s even more important, the trunk opening will also be bigger than before, allowing for easier loading
Speaking of the rear end, the prototype is finally ditching the fake taillights for what appear to be production clusters, positioned horizontally and split by the boot lid. These wider taillights not only enhance the visual feeling of a wider car, but once again suggest the new A-Class is actually going to be a tad wider than the current model.
Our photographers have also managed to get the first interior photos of the car, revealing major changes for the dashboard. The tablet-style center display of the current A-Class is apparently going to be replaced by a bigger screen, while the instrument cluster will be fully digital, just like in the E-Class and S-Class. Of course, this high-tech display won’t come as standard and will be offered for the higher-grade versions.
Based on the second generation MFA platform, the new generation of the German brand’s entry-level model will be the smartest A-Class to date. In addition to the new displays, it will likely be available with an array of semi-autonomous and safety systems, as previous spy photos have showed several cameras and radars mounted on the upper area of the windscreen.

We are still waiting for an official confirmation from the automaker, but sources say the new A-Class will make its global premiere at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show in September. Initially, Mercedes will sell the core part of the range, including the base three-cylinder version and other four-cylinder diesel and gasoline variants. They will be joined by the range-topping A45 AMG at a later date – probably turning the car into the first production A-Class with 400 horsepower (298 kilowatts).

Looks like a major improvement over the current one. Particularly on the front end and the interior.

Major improvements it seems. Looks like A is getting capacitive switches all around. If this is the interior of A, just imagine what would be the interior of next gen S and C:woot:

Already the dual screens look like overkill to me, simply not needed in this compact segment..but otherwise the interior will sure be premium.
