GLS 2017 Mercedes-Benz GL Facelift: Spy Pics & Info

The Mercedes-Benz GLS, formerly Mercedes-Benz GL-Class, is a full-size luxury crossover SUV produced by Mercedes-Benz since 2006. The GLS is considered the flagship of the marque's SUV lineup, although the body-on-frame G-Class (originally intended for military off-roading but also offered in luxurious trims) is more expensive and has been in production longer.

Mercedes-Benz GL-Class Facelift Spied Testing in United States

These are the first spy shots with the upcoming facelifted 2015 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class.

Introduced back in April 2012, the Mercedes-Benz GL-Class is getting ready for a mild makeover to keep the luxury full-size crossover fresh until the next generation set to arrive around 2017. The prototype seen here was spotted testing somewhere in United States featuring camouflage only on the front fascia which indicates changes will be limited to a restyled bumper and an updated grille.

The prototype caught on camera was the GL500 4MATIC equipped with a V8 4.7-liter engine delivering 435 PS (320 kW) at 6,000 rpm and 391 lb-ft (529 Nm) of torque between 2,800 rpm and 4,800 rpm. Output is sent to both axles through a 7G-TRONIC transmission which allows the GL reach 62 mph (100 km/h) in 5.4 seconds before topping out at 155 mph (250 km/h).

In this configuration, the GL-Class consumes 14.5 liters / 100 km in the city, 9.3 liters / 100 km on the highway and 11.3 liters / 100 km in the combined cycle, with corresponding CO2 emissions of 262 g/km.

The GL350, GL450, GL550 and GL63 AMG will be carried over onto the facelifted model along with the recently GL400 equipped with a twin-turbo V6 3.0-liter producing 333 PS (245 kW) and 354 lb-ft (480 Nm), enough for a 6.7s sprint and a 149 mph (240 km/h) top speed.

According to a recent report, the next-gen GL-Class will be offered in a more luxurious Maybach variant. Until then, expect the facelifted current-gen GL to be shown as early as October at the Paris Motor Show or in January next year at NAIAS in Detroit.

I've been expecting this to show up soon. Quite odd how this will supposedly arrive before the W166 facelift and is testing before prototypes of the W213.

Was wondering when this was going to pop. I enjoy the mismatched exhaust outlets. :p
The right one must be a new exhaust design, more in line with the rest the Mercedes-Benz range.

I'm wondering why they need 2 years to test a facelift like the W166, yet this one only gets a few months? It seems as if BMW is the fastest out of the three with product development.

I can see Mercedes doing a major SUV push for the 2016 model year in the U.S. FL ML and GL, new ML Coupe/MLC and a new GLK are all scheduled for 2016 MY. That will take some of the pain away as the E-Class goes into old age.

I was wondering if I was the only one who noticed how tinny the star looked on that huge grille. Apparently I was not and MB new it quite well. This is a much better design than the ML one, a few touches on the grille and bumpers will do the job.

And it seems this is what we are getting.

MB has been testing in Death Valley for many years. :)

Death Valley Tests For The Mercedes-Benz GL
It appears that Death Valley is starting to become a preferred testing ground for the vehicles of Mercedes-Benz. The Mercedes-Benz ML Coupe was spotted undergoing tests in the Death Valley around a week ago. This time another product of the luxury vehicle manufacturer was spotted going through tests in one of the hottest places in the face of the Earth. Images that emerged recently showed a redesigned Mercedes-Benz GL going through tests in Death Valley, according to a report from worldcarfans.com.

The front fascia of the upcoming vehicle, which is expected to be officially unveiled following the launch of the ML, was redesigned by the German company. It features a brand-new grille along with a different bumper. The dashboard of the prototype of the redesigned Mercedes-Benz GL was covered to conceal its standalone screen. This is a similar screen used on the latest vehicles released by Mercedes-Benz.

Industry watchers believe that these are the only modifications made on the full-size luxury SUV since it will still have a similar engine lineup as the previous model. This engine lineup includes a 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 engine offering 333 PS. This is the same engine used on the recently-released GL400, which is capable of accelerating from 0 to 62 mph or 100 km/h within 6.7 seconds. It is also expected to have a maximum speed of 149 mph or 240 km/h. This is quite notable especially since it is expected to weigh around 2.5 tons.

The redesigned GL is expected to encompass three model years since the next model of the vehicle is not expected to be launched until 2017. This particular model will be unveiled as the 2018 MY, and is expected to be a derivative of the Maybach. The future models of the ML Coupe and S-Class Coupe will follow the same path as the Mercedes-Benz GL.

This post is a little old and I was wonderinng if there were any updates on the 2016 facelift? Is this still predicted to happen in 2016? Does this mean we can expect to see these showing up in the US around Septemeber of next year? Will this include Apple CarPlay?

Nah I would say that it will happen in 2015 for the 2016 model year, at least for the U.S.

I just can't wait for the next generation. IF they truly do re-name it the GLS, it will have to be a S-Class level vehicle. The interior will be a knock out. That said, the current GL is still my favorite in that class.

M

The cost would probably be reflected in the knockout interior as well.

I meant a much higher cost.

Anyone get to the Paris Auto Show? Was the GL350/450 interior updated yet?

^ The GL length and wheelbase roughly compare to the S-Class SWB. It's not that huge. Both the S LWB and S XWB are longer. The GL can be driven "like a car", drives very well IMHO, and parking due to its compact length is not as big of a problem as one might suspect from its "gigantic" dimensions. Sales wise YTD in Germany, the S leads with 8000, the GL and G both are at around 1600 units each, while the SL/SLS trails with 1200. :)

If they can change the front lights and the interior then it will be much more appealing
