MX-5 2014 Mazda MX-5 Miata Rendered, Detailed

The Mazda MX-5 is a lightweight two-person sports car manufactured and marketed by Mazda. The convertible is marketed as the Mazda Roadster or Eunos Roadster in Japan, and as the Mazda Miata in the United States, and formerly in Canada, where it is now marketed as the MX-5 but is still commonly referred to as "Miata".
Mazda rules out a high-performance MX-5

Mazda MX-5 Program Manager Nobuhiro Yamamoto has revealed the roadster won't be getting any high-performance variants.

Speaking to Top Gear at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, Yamamoto said "It's important not to get hung up on numbers" because "the driving experience and feeling is more important than power." Yamamoto went on to say a high-performance MX-5 would be expensive and that would defeat one of their key objectives of making the roadster affordable.

When asked specifically about the possibility of a turbocharged engine, Yamamoto told the publication he never considered one because "naturally aspirated engines are just nice, especially for this kind of car."

Will be used as a pace car
Mazda has unveiled the first production 2016 MX-5 Cup at the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion in California.

Set to become a pace car at the Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, the model closely echoes the standard race car but is distinguished by special graphics and emergency lights.

The company is still withholding specifications but noted "placing the first production race car into pace car duty allows Mazda to gather additional durability data while showcasing it in front of one of the most influential motorsports crowds of the year."

Mazda MX-5 Spyder and Speedster concepts teased for SEMA

Mazda MX-5 Spyder and Speedster concepts

Mazda has announced plans to introduce the 2016 MX-5 Spyder and MX-5 Speedster concepts at SEMA on November 3rd.

First up, the MX-5 Spyder concept was designed to "capture the character of a vintage roadster and translate it into a modern-day design." Mazda says it will feature a unique Mercury Silver exterior and a bespoke leather interior which was "painstakingly crafted."

The MX-5 Speedster, on the other hand, pays homage to minimalist roadsters of the 1950s. As a result, it will embrace lightweight construction and the idea of "purpose-built performance." Mazda went on to say the car will have a Blue Ether exterior and a front "deflector" that replaces the traditional windscreen.

Mazda is keeping performance specifications under wraps but the automaker confirmed both concepts will weigh "significantly" less than the standard MX-5 which tips the scales at 2,332 lbs (1057 kg). The company also said the concepts will feature a number of custom and aftermarket components from Racing Beat, Haartz Corporation, ASC, Makin Industries/RAYS Wheels, KW Suspensions, Delta Seat, H&R Springs, Lusch, AC&A Manufacturing, Franks Fab Shop, Long Road Racing and SIM Specialty Interior Manufacturing.

Mazda MX-5 Spyder and MX-5 Speedster concepts fully revealed at SEMA

After last month’s teaser, Mazda has introduced the MX-5 Spyder and MX-5 Speedster concepts at the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) show in Las Vegas.

The main idea behind these two concepts is to highlight the Miata’s lightweight construction through additional derivatives of the model such as a Spyder and a Speedster which both draw their inspiration from vintage roadsters.

The Spyder weighs as little as 1,043 kg (2,299 lbs) and wears a Mercury Silver body combined with a bikini top and a carbon fiber aerodynamic kit. It sits on 17-inch ADVAN Racing RS II wheels wrapped around in Yokohama tires and has received Brembo four-piston front calipers with vented rotors along with adjustable coilovers while on the inside it gets a Spinneybeck PRIMA natural full-grain leather upholstery.

As for the Speedster, this one is even lighter as it tips the scales at 943 kg (2,078 lbs) possible by removing the conventional windscreen and replacing it with a deflector which according to Mazda enhances the ”old school wind-in-the-hair sports car experience.” More weight was shaved off by installing carbon fiber doors and seats along with a 16-inch set of RAYS 57 Extreme Gram Lights wheels with Kumho Ecsta tires. Painted in Blue Ether with a black Alcantara upholstery, the MX-5 Speedster concept sits 30mm lower than the regular Miata thanks to the K&W adjustable coilover suspension and just like the Spyder it has Brembo four-piston front calipers with vented rotors.

The two concepts will be on display at SEMA until Friday.

Mazda MX-5 Roadster Coupe reportedly headed for New York

The New York Auto Show kicks off on March 23rd and Mazda has quietly announced plans to introduce a new model at the annual event.

Mazda is keeping details under wraps but the company sent out invites which ask journalists to "Help us blow the lid off at the New York Auto Show." That doesn't reveal much but it seems to indicate Mazda will unveil a new version of the MX-5.

Nothing is official but Autocar is reporting the Japanese automaker will likely introduce the new MX-5 Roadster Coupe. Little is known about the car but previous reports have suggested the model will be equipped with a lighter retractable hardtop that eats up less luggage space. Those are improvements everyone can get behind but they will unfortunately make the MX-5 Roadster Coupe heavier and more expensive than the standard model which starts at $24,915.

Engine options will carryover, so American consumers can expect a familiar 2.0-liter SKYACTIV-G four-cylinder engine that produces 155 horsepower and 148 pound-feet of torque. It can be connected to either a six-speed manual or an optional six-speed automatic transmission.

Mazda MX-5 RF
The Mazda MX-5 has been tremendously popular with car enthusiasts around the world and will soon reach the 1 million mark in global production volume. While the fourth-generation soft-top model honed the pure driving pleasure of a lightweight sports car, the hardtop model, with its exquisite fastback styling and a new open-top feel, has a personality all its own.

Changing Style, Unchanging Value, New Name

By the end of the third-generation MX-5's model life, the retractable hardtop model accounted for more than half of all MX-5s sold and was popular with those who wanted all-season comfort and utility.

As a member of the MX-5 family, the fourth-generation retractable hardtop model embodies the core value of "Lots of fun," which the MX-5 has consistently offered since 1989. At the same time it features a new and unique design, and lets occupants enjoy a new kind of open-air driving feel. Therefore, our challenge was to create a name that would more accurately define this new, more premium experience we envision will attract a new kind of buyer yet preserve the unchanging values that MX-5 fans have admired since the inception of the model.

The result was Mazda MX-5 RF (Retractable Fastback), a name that denotes the model's retractable hardtop and fastback styling, and will surely resonate with enthusiasts and drivers around the world.

Same philosophy. New design. Mazda MX-5 RF.

Exterior design

The design goal for the Mazda MX-5 RF was to create the ideal form for a hardtop version of the MX-5. In other words, it was to achieve an entirely new roof design that combines a beautiful cabin with the silhouette of a hardtop and the same level of open-air comfort and freedom afforded by the soft-top version. To this end, Mazda set about creating an uncompromising design based on the following four ideals.

A beautiful silhouette

In contrast to the open-air styling of the soft-top model, the Mazda MX-5 RF will often be appreciated for its hardtop styling with the roof closed. This demands that the cabin presents a beautiful silhouette when the roof is closed.

The rear roof features side sections that slope down gently toward the rear, while also tucking in at the sides to create a perfect teardrop shape for the cabin. The flowing roofline along the A-pillars, roof sides and rear roof, which are painted in the body colour, combine with the straight body line that runs from the low bonnet through to the rear deck, realising an elegant, beautiful fastback silhouette that accentuates its styling.

While the overhead roof panels and back window glass are stowed out of sight, the rear roof stays in position when the top is down. This differs from any other hardtop model on the market to create a truly unique new design expression.

Compact packaging

With the exception of a 5mm increase in the height of the roof, the Mazda MX-5 RF maintains the same overall length, width and wheelbase as the soft-top model. This compact packaging properly expresses the stability and dynamism of the MX-5's road-gripping stance.

A new open-air experience

The Mazda MX-5 RF features unique styling when the roof is open by which the overhead roof panels and back window glass are stowed away out of sight. The result is a pleasing sense of freedom combined with a reassuring feeling of being wrapped securely in the cabin. This combines with the enjoyable exhaust note coming from the rear of the car to amplify the fun of open-air driving.

Independent trunk

The Mazda MX-5 RF does not sacrifice practicality for the sake of offering a retractable roof. In addition to the efforts of the designers and packaging engineers to realise a beautiful silhouette while adopting the hardtop, the independent trunk also secures the exact same luggage capacity as on the soft-top model.

Body colours

Machine Grey: This is a newly developed body colour first introduced on the CX-9, a mid-sized three-row crossover SUV. Machine Grey was developed to express the beauty of a machine's strength and precision. With strong contrast between light and shadow and a sleek, high-density finish, it gives the impression that the vehicle's body has been sculpted from a solid steel ingot.

Roof colour

The sides of the roof and rear roof are colour matched to the body colour. The top of the roof is available in either piano black or the body colour.

Interior design

Major interior design features include body panels that wrap around and extend right into the door trim, as well as a cockpit zone centred on the driver and around which all major controls are laid out in perfect symmetry. Special attention to every detail focused on transcending its existence as a mere automobile to become a sports car that owners will truly love. As with the soft-top model, the aim was to create a cockpit design that brings a smile to the face and gets the heart pounding simply by looking at it or sitting in the driver's seat. Benefitting from its hardtop, the Mazda MX-5 RF significantly improves ride quietness and heightens the feeling of high quality.

Detail design

The basic design features are essentially the same as on the soft-top model. This includes the elaborate three-meter cluster and sharp-looking, compact steering wheel, as well as the horizontal layout of the instrument panel and strong sense of front-rear movement conveyed by the door trim. The two points that differ on the Mazda MX-5 RF are as follows.

Meters

The information display to the left of the three-meter cluster adopts a dedicated 4.6-inch colour TFT LCD screen that displays an animation of the roof when it is opening or closing.
Hardtop open/close button

A button for opening and closing the roof is positioned on the panel below the dials for the air-conditioning system.

Seat design and interior colours

The higher level of quality and soft touch of Auburn-coloured Nappa leather seats enhances the interior's relaxing and sophisticated ambience. Grey stitching is used on the seats and centre sections of the door trim.

World Car Awards has announced the winners in the 2016 World Car of the Year.

Millionth Mazda MX-5 Miata rolls off the assembly line
8ae532888123db055c2ff39af9990aee.webp

Since it started production in 1989, the MX-5 Miata spawned no less than 1,000,000 copies of the breed. Certainly, such a milestone calls for a celebration.

Produced at the Ujina Plant No.1 in Hiroshima on April 22, 2016, the one millionth Mazda MX-5 Miata will make an appearance at various events around the world, including the 2016 Goodwood Festival of Speed. As an added bonus, the Japanese manufacturer will exhibit the millionth MX-5 Miata next to the bite-the-back-of-your-hand beautiful MX-5 Speedster and MX-5 Spyder concepts from the 2015 SEMA Show.

“From the first generation through to today’s fourth-generation model, the reason we have been able to continue selling the MX-5 all these years is due to the strong support of fans around the world,” declared Masamichi Kogai, Mazda Motor Corporation representative director, president and CEO. “Mazda was founded in Hiroshima 96 years ago, and as we move toward our centennial year we will continue offering customers the joy of driving with this model, which has become a symbol of our brand. Mazda aims to create a special bond with customers and become a ‘one-and-only’ brand they will choose again and again,” further commented Kogai.

Creating a special bond with the owner and all that other romantic jibber-jabber is no overstatement, you see. After all, the MX-5 Miata continues to be the best-selling two-seater convertible sports car in history. The first time the peeps at the Guinness Books of World Records declared the MX-5 as such, the year was 2000 and the production tally sat at 531,890 units. In 1992, Mazda produced the 250,000th unit.

Better still, the one millionth MX-5 couldn’t have arrived at a better time. Of course, I’m referring to the fact that the Mazda MX-5 Miata is enjoying the titles of 2016 World Car of the Year and 2016 World Car Design of the Year. Here’s to another 27 years and 1 million units of the best-selling two-seater sports car ever.

Mazda MX-5 RF priced from $31,555, Launch Edition available to order

668fa87405d64c4079e166bc05104458.webp

The Mazda MX-5 is absolutely amazing as an everyday car, but the 2017 RF adds a little more solidity – to the roof, anyway. And now, you can order one.

Mazda announced today the RF Launch Edition can now be ordered online at MX5RFPreOrder.com, for the already announced price of $33,850. All 1,000 Launch Editions are painted Machine Gray and feature a black retractable roof with Auburn Nappa leather upholstery inside – it's the only way to get this color combination on a Miata.

The company says many of these Launch Editions are already spoken for, so if you want one and haven't signed up you're already dragging your feet. But pricing news for these less-special edition Miata RFs has trickled out.

A Miata RF Club will start at $31,555, according to Road & Track. Like the roadster, the RF gets a choice of standard six-speed manual or an optional six-speed automatic. The Club is also available with a BBS Wheel and Brembo Brake combo. Those seeking more comfort should look at the Grand Touring, starting from $32,260, since it gets leather upholstery, Bose audio and other niceties.

The Launch Edition arrives early next year, with the standard RF going on sale shortly after. At which point you'll have no excuse not to get some kind of Miata if you're in the market for a fun-to-drive roadster.
