Very nice design. Looks fresh even though it's almost a 10 year old design

How is this a 10years old design? Interior screams latest Touareg. And exterior , it's new. Not 10 years old

And what does the title even mean? "The 2014 VW Phaeton that never was".... What do you mean by that?

Vw showed this car recently. This was supposed to be the second gen Phaeton It was production ready for a 2015 model year. It was later canceled. Yeah, the interior screams touareg. But the phaeton was supposed to be the first car with this interior. The guy even said so in the vid. Got cancelled because of dieselgate. Buying a luxo barge with a W12 or diesel V8 with from a brand with a huge PR f#ckup, they decided a niche model was not worth it. But a SUV - sure. That could be the new "flagship".

"The 2014 VW Phaeton that never was"

I don't know why PR from VW brings this to the fore now, to remember that they scammed half the of the world?

The design is very sophisticated and beautiful, but bland and more boring than the first Phaeton, so I don't think it would have stood out at all, but without the novelty of being the first it would have been worse.

The interior is very good, exceptional and is, for example, similar to that of the Genesis 2022, which is why, as I said, they are interiors inspired by their competitors of the time, Mercedes and BMW are light years ahead and on another level.

Answering "The 2014 VW Phaeton that never was" that is just like the E31 M8 that never was, it does not exist, it never existed, and they should not show them, they are a monument to failure, they discover halfway that there is no business case, they do not have the courage to go the last mile, and the accountants beat the engineers and designers

I find these discoveries interesting at the least when they open the vaults to another world.
Especially that they deemed the first car to be successful to develop an all new replacement.
There are a lot of uncovered secrets out there. Not just at VW but practically everyone. If only they would open the vaults.

I agree with this. As stunning as the interior is, the exterior is somehow blander than the previous gen Phaeton, dont get me wrong it looks good. But I think this would have been an even more of a sales failure.

I don't remember it that way, but big time failure in the USA, which was where I was aiming as a market, so as not to seem like a failure and bet again they would have made the successor, also with all the money that was stolen at the expense of the clients, saving development to meet the pollution standards, so anyone develops a car even at a loss.

The first Phaeton on the other hand seemed to be an exceptional car, over-engineered, an Audi and more appreciated by VW.

Successful in China. And thats all that mattered.

The Passat looked like a scaled down version of this and sold really well. The huge screen and virtual cluster wiped the flor with the 2015 A8 and it looks even better than the D5 A8, the China market in the last 8 years grew, so I think this car stood a chance to be a good seller for it's class. But just after dieselgate unveiling a car with a V8 diesel and W12 under the VW brand... That would be a bad look

I agree. I think they modernized the interior for this presentation by lifting the dash design and infotainment system lifted from the current Touareg.

The thing is a new car although launched today is actually around two years old already. Due to its design freeze and allocated development and testing timeframes.

They are designed and thought to anticipate those dead years, I am surprised at you spider
