Man, the new RR looks so bland and nondescript from the front. Literally "cheap" front.

I don't know if it's the best, but my favourite is the Rangie. It'll do well. Of this I am sure.

K-A, do you think a Bigger grill would have helped? Or is it the bumper that has the issue?

It actually looks pretty good in that particular pic (never trust press pics which is why I usually don't pay much attention to them). IMO it's a few things: The grille is just "meek", non defined, I guess it could be bigger, but it's not really about the size I think, I wish it just looked "sharper" in the metaphorical sense. There's also a lot of busy vents in the bumper, that remind me of generic 80's cars. I would have liked it cleaned up, and more carved and defined, it just looks too stale to me.... like, too "plastic-y".

I think it looks imposing, distinctive and - importantly - expensive. As good as Merc's SUVs are (and I'm a real fan, especially of the GL) they look cheap in comparison.

Aesthetically they are outclassed by this new Range Rover which customarily remains a rolling artwork. It embodies the combination of simple elegance with the right amount of detailing - done but not overdone.

You have a point there martinbo.

The RR is a very Bi-spoke design, rich and elegent. It`s simply a more upscale vehicle in comparison.
The SUV is RRs main focus and primary design work. Thay don`t have a luxury car line which is an advantage for it. If thay did I`m pretty sure the design would be less distinctive and would not stand out like the car line. Thay would probably "suffer" from the same thing th GL is. Mercedes is capable of the same thing, but would you have your SUV line standing out more than your S-Class for example? I don`t think so. This is one of the reasons these SUVs are different. Mercedes is a luxury car designer first, SUV second. With the RR, it`s the other way around.

That is an advantage Audi has, they don't have any true image car, so they can make every car in the line-up as good as possible. They don't have "model faithful" clients. The down side of that is they don't have any heritage like Mercedes of the RR.

Pffff

I'm getting around to the new RR. Not fully there, but getting there.

My only design desires are 1) I do wish the front end was blunter, esp. from profile view., and 2) I do wish the side "gills" were not placed on the door and at least look functional. I know the design is all said and done, but IMO, RR's ought to be, first and foremost, functional with their aesthetics, followed very closely by fashion.

The R8 is a true halo/image car for Audi.

But it doesn't add anything to Audi's heritage. Like Lexus and the LFA also, it came out of nothing (well a Gallardo). The SLS on the other hand has some history like SL Gullwing, the SLR to name these. If BMW comes out with a supercar, it also has heritage either as an M1, M12, M8 or Z8 successor.

Is that a wet fart I hear? Having a bad day?

:D :D

I'm afraid I'm with klier in this one. This time they exaggerated a lot with the Range's design. MB's ML and GL are more clean, simple and elegant. They didn't need shouty details for the design to stand out, not to mention the "tour-de-force" of technology, as klier put it. Sure, the interior is very luxurious and can put any Rolls to shame, but is it the only point? Range Rovers were simple in the past, and this simplicity was one of the reasons of their success. Now this one is all over the place!

If I was an ML/GL owner, I would feel bad about the interior compared to the RR. The only way for them to keep up is Designo.

I wouldn't. The Range looks generic, and what saves it are leftovers of the previous design...

Maybe you don't like the RR interior, but the ML/GL interior IMO is not that good either. The new Q7 will surely have an interior like A7/A8 which are gorgeous and the new X5 will surely also have an interior similar to the 6 Series which also is awesome. So I think the ML/GL will be last. Of course that is subjective, because quality/fit is good in the ML/GL.

A bit, yes. There's some nice stuff too, but overall it's not overly hot. The new X5 and Q7, like Levi said, will be better.
