These 411s' were funky rides. They were known as "Der Nasenbär" (the animal coati). They were crap.
They are too cute to compare with that horrible car, I met them on the slopes of Iguazu Falls, there are hundreds of them, they are friendly and they fearlessly approach tourists who feed them with snacks and also they steal your food bags, of course they have teeth the size of a doberman's and sometimes they get mad

The very first car that I owned was a 1967 VW 1200 "Sparkäfer", purchased used in spring of 1971. It was loud, slow, bare, either too hot or too cold inside, had "questionable-to-dangerous" handling characteristics, sucked alot of petrol for a 1.2L 34PS flat 4, sprouted an ever-increasing number of rust blemishes...but it was easy to repair with a few spanners, screwdrivers and a timing light, it got me around much of western Europe, dents, nicks and scratches simply added character and it got me through Bavarian winters of the day without snow tires. I loved it. And kept it for about 4 years.

Offhand, I can't think of a more unfortunate VW exterior design.
Like yourself, my dad's first car was too a VW Beetle, in my dad's case it was a 1972 VW Fusca 1500 just like the one pictured below.
He bought in 1980 and kept it for just one year. He always tells me that the only redeeming feature about it is that he no longer had to take the bus to go to work. That proves that even a bad car is still better than having no car at all and rely on public transportation. He replaced it with a 1980 Chevette in 1981. He then proceeded to be a loyal Chevrolet customer until 2005 when he switched to Toyota.

The Fusca 1500 Bug is an interesting car. Especially pertaining to the combination of pre-1964 body elements (headlamps, sideglass) paired with more modern post-1964 (and post-1967) components such as windscreen/rear windows, bumpers, rear engine cover, taillamps... It also had much cooler stamped-steel wheels than the Euro/U.S. Bugs.
