I wonder why BMW hasn't got ceramic brakes, cause I know Porsche and Audi got them. I am not sure about Mercedes.. The high end M models should have them as well dont you think?!

klier, from my POV, I don't think they are necessary .. in porsche and audi very few order such feature although they are efficient but very expensive also ... both to purchase and maintain ... I remember when my bro ordered his cayman they asked him for almost 6K $ just for the ceramic brakes which is not reasonable when normal brakes could do the job efficiently ... just my thoughts about ur concerns ... I think BMW should offer such brakes for its up-coming super car (if rumors were correct) ..

I don't think there's any real need for carbon-ceramic brakes for high-performance BMW models. They're good enough as it is - so why bother? To add another option to BMW's already burgeoing options list?

Its expensive and the brakes on M cars works perfect for normal driving. Only M cars that would be good with ceramic brakes are CSL versions since those cars are trackcars and there ceramic brakes makes perfect sense.

Gerd Richter, technical director of the M division, describing the decision not to use ceramic brake discs:

"Ceramic discs are lighter, but they cannot absorb as much heat as cast-iron rotors. This diverts the temperature stress to the calipers, which subsequently need to go up in size and weight, so you lose some of the initial advantage while at the same time further increasing the cost deficit."

i think AMG mercs have ceramic brakes too

the SLR has it but that's the only one I believe. It make perfect sense in supercars.

Am I right is saying the brakes on the M5 aren't that great!

I remember the brakes where the weak part of the car because they faded really quickly!

Well I think they should use them.
BMW ///M cars are expensive, someone who buys an ///M car, perhaps except the M3/CS, should be able to afford the sticker/maintainance cost, since they probalbly own a couple of other cars too.
They shoud be at least optionals.

they are good for normaldriving and everyday use, for the track they arent the best.

Thanks for the answers guys.

I think it should at least be an option, considering Audi offers it on a car (S8) less expensive and even less for the track than BMW...

And on the next M3 CSL, it is a must, imho

Any one else think that cars kind of reached the ceiling... i dont think you need Carbon ceramic brakes...heck i dont think u need 500hp (IMO 300hp is enough)...if they offer it on cars like m-cars theres so much competion it will proabably filter down to regular road cars... i dont think thats a good thing

I think the simple answer is price... too expensive.

That said, I'm with you Klier, they could and should be offered as an option for those you are willing to pay!
