M1 BMW considered an M1 successor, but doesn't want one

The BMW M1 (model code E26) is a mid-engined sports car produced by German automotive manufacturer BMW from 1978 until 1981. In the late 1970s, Italian automobile manufacturer Lamborghini entered into an agreement with BMW to build a production racing car in sufficient quantity for homologation, but conflicts arose that prompted BMW to produce the car themselves. The resulting car was sold to the public, from 1978 until 1981, as the BMW M1. It was the first mid-engine BMW automobile to be mass-produced; the second was the i8 plug-in hybrid sports car. As far as the contents of this thread is concerned, let me state this:

1. GCF is not interested about what your past is with other forums. This is highly off-topic, a hot-potato issue and should be discussed via PMs. All respective posts have been deleted.

2. The quality of many posts in this thread has reached rock bottom and is in the process of digging the ground. Please, guys, let's have a nice debate!

I am sorry for the heavy thread cleaning, but it was neccessary!

BTW, does anyone know what happened to that rumored V12 hybrid BMW was planning?.

I don't believe a word of what Matt Russell said in that interview. BMW would love to have a successor to the M1 because such halo products give the brand as a whole a lift. Money is the main factor here because the returns seldom cover the development costs, it requires companies with very deep pockets. Just look what BMW needed to sell the M3GTS for and that was only a modified M3 not a new product.

No doubt BMW have the know how to get such a product to market and be ultra competitive but in the present world climate I don't see them dipping their toe into this pond any time soon......... if ever.

What a shame BMW M cannot build any supercar/sportscar because there is no market for it. How Mercedes can sell so many SLS, Audi so many R8 and BMW cannot? Shame, BMW cannot even build a 200 PS 1200 kg lightweight sportscar like the Toyota GT86. There is only market for 600 PS Mastodons weighing 2,5 tons.

They're just to small, probably if they try to make it, it would mean less profits...

BMW M

BMW M GmbH, formerly known as BMW Motorsport GmbH, is a subsidiary of BMW AG that manufactures high-performance luxury cars. BMW M ("M" for "motorsport") was initially created to facilitate BMW's racing program, which was very successful in the 1960s and 1970s. As time passed, BMW M began to supplement BMW's vehicle portfolio with specially modified higher trim models, for which they are now most known by the general public. These M-badged cars traditionally include modified engines, transmissions, suspensions, interior trims, aerodynamics, and exterior modifications to set them apart from their counterparts. All M models are tested and tuned at BMW's private facility at the Nürburgring racing circuit in Germany.
