Fresh on the market and already a true winner, the Hyundai IONIQ 5 has won a 2022 German Car of the Year (GCOTY) award in the “New Energy” category. As a class winner, the automaker’s full-electric midsize CUV will automatically take part in the final round of the GCOTY. IONIQ 5 will compete against the winners of the “Compact”, “Premium”, “Luxury” and “Performance” categories. The overall winner will be announced on November 25, 2021.

At the GCOTY awards, an internationally networked jury of 20 motoring journalists tested and evaluated the most important new automotive releases of the year in terms of product features, relevance and future viability.

“IONIQ 5 is the start of the new Hyundai era, as it rediscovers our roots by reinterpreting the DNA of the first Hyundai – the Pony – to project our brand into the future,” said Luc Donckerwolke, Chief Creative Officer at Hyundai Motor Group. “It is the first car designed from inside-out, made possible by the innovative flat floor offered by our new dedicated Electric Global Modular Platform. IONIQ 5’s ‘New Energy’ award proves that Hyundai is producing models that care for customers through all the phases of their electric journey.”

IONIQ 5’s overall package did not only convince the German Car of the Year jury, where it prevailed against competitors such as the BMW iX and the Mercedes-Benz EQS, in addition, it is also very popular with customers.

“IONIQ 5 advancing to the final round of the German Car of the Year after securing a win in the ‘New Energy’ category proves that our fully-electric midsize CUV is a leader in the European car market,” says Andreas-Christoph Hofmann, Vice President Marketing and Product at Hyundai Motor Europe. “IONIQ 5 is an essential part of our electrification strategy. This further success underlines our company’s strength in zero-emission mobility.”

Thank god for some exciting and good non-German alternatives! What did the car drive like?
It was only the single motor, and it was surprisingly nippy. The suspension was alright. It's not a sports car I guess. We got an offer for the dual motor version, for a co-worker as his work car. We'll probably try and drive one of those first. It offers a lot more features than a Tesla.

Supposedly next year the battery is getting an upgrade to the same as the Kia EV6 has. So it'll be about 7% more.
We didn't like the salesperson at all. So will probably go elsewhere. I have a feeling the co worker will take this car, and I might wait to see the Genesis GV60 and decide then. Our entire office should be electric in the next 6 months or so.

Genesis cars are extremely appealing and if you can wait for the GV60 then I recommend doing so.

The E-GMP platform cars are good for the general audience but I found the IONIQ 5 and EV6 lacking for my taste in performance driving. Plus they are boats. It's incredible how big they are outside and in. IONIQ 5 appears like a Golf blown up by 50%!

Love the quirky crystal gear selector. Creates a sense of ocassion that is missing in most luxury EVs

It's cool and quirky but not something I want to use every day especially when Iäm in hurry. Polestar 2 is the best. Just sit in and drive within 1 sec.

It's odd, to say the least. You've got a huge rotating sphere with lights, with a huge wheel and a tiny button on it. Then, you have another button to rotate the sphere and hide the P button. It's unnecessarily complex. And it will eventually break. It looks cool, but it will break at some point.

Also, for people like me who find frustrating just saying goodmorning even to your girlfriend when you wake up in the morning, I bet this rotating knob/ button/ switch will be a source of many little outbursts of rage.

My wife and I are planning to visit Hamburgs' Polestar Store in some two weeks time (we have some things to attend to in the particular district of the city). Just for a casual "look & see" and perhaps a conversation with a salesperson. We're not quite "in the market" as of yet, but gradually gathering a bit of info can't be wrong. And both of us have been smitten by the Polestar 2, thus hypothetically placing it on the short-list. Attractive leasing packages will be of absolute essence.

I told the EQC was a failure...It just lost a comparison for a friggin' Hyundai!

The Koreans are hoisting the Germans by the petard they created. Now toughen up schatz... 'Cause the NIO, JAC and GAC are next in line to show you who's der boss.

That's an EQA.

The Hyundai is a better electric car than the EQA at this point….. people like me, who’ve only ever considered German are now walking into Hyundai dealerships and driving cars. I would say that’s already a good start.

Yes, it indeed appears that the willingness to "give a non-German brand a shot" has been increasing. Tesla and the Hyundai Group, for example, are commanding increasing legions of "curious, discerning shoppers". The "buzz" that cars such as the IONIQ 5, KIA EV60 and Tesla Y are generating is impressive here in Germany. The Volvo XC40 Recharge is becoming very popular in my region (in fact, it may very well be the best-selling electric vehicle in my particular county. A large local Volvo dealership may help, of course.). The Peugeot e-208 is selling very well.
