Movies The "I Saw _____ " (Movie) Recently Thread

I really want to see this one, even if I am not familiar with the deep lore.
Can it be streamed? Who owns it?
If you know where to find “streaming” platforms? You can download a perfect 4K copy as they put it out on HBO MAX and everybody downloaded it from there. The film studio wasn’t prepared for that outcome affecting its box office.

The studio weren't making the call thinking it would be good for the films financial performance - AT&T dictated it to boost the value of their investment in WB. Villenueve was quite vocal about it over a year ago, and openly slated the decision as desperate attempt to grab market share for HBO Max as a "failing" service. He also said the film won't have the chance to perform financially and "piracy will ultimately triumph".

Yeah, this is also was one of the very few I wanted see in theaters, especially in full-fat IMAX format. Sigh...

I saw it in IMAX a few weeks ago. Actually the first film I've seen in IMAX as far as I remember. Can't say I cared for the experience much. The curvature the screen imparted to the strong horizontal lines in the films cinematography and design was noticeable and distracting. The audio mix was also sh!te though that's very likely to be the fault of the specific cinema I saw it in as the sound design itself seemed quite effective.

The film itself is very good for what it is, but it's only half the story and if you're not already aware of how it all goes, you might find the lack of positive story arc through this film leaves the ending a little flat. If you are aware at least of David Lynch's Dune, then you might well find this film suddenly makes the old one make a lot more sense. The casting and script was mostly excellent, and there was only a couple of shots where I thought the CGI let the experience down.

Last one i saw on IMAX was Interstellar in 2014. I did remember the sound was crap, and I figure that was more because Nolan's flicks tend to be that way, and my other IMAX experience was TDK and TDKR, and the sound mixing was... not great. Interstellar in IMAX was a great visual experience, but I was fairly ambivalent with the Dark Knight movies. I hoped things progressed more so since. What I read that Dune was quite the treat on the IMAX screen.

What I read that Dune was quite the treat on the IMAX screen.

I'd say it's a treat on a big screen, to do the scale of some scenes justice, but I'm not sure the benefit of the IMAX screen is there.

The sound is a weird one. It was like the speakers weren't able to maintain their volume at certain mid-to-low frequencies, because everything was being focused on producing the necessary volume right at the bottom of the frequency range (I think about 20Hz for IMAX?).. which is stupid because at that level it's far more about feeling the sound than discerning it.

I know many people perceive excessive bass to indicate 'good' sound, but part of the IMAX 'thing' is an even response across the widest range available, to make it all loud.

I watched Dune in IMAX and didn’t pick up any issues with the sound or visual format. I thought it all went rather excellently.
We then purchased it on Apple TV and my daughter’s watched it four times now. She says it’s her second favourite sci-fi of all behind Interstellar.

I feel like Hans Zimmer's soundtracks that he has done since Inception has often been a bit too OTT, particularly when it comes to bass.

I really am kicking myself for that. I am hoping when the 2nd half comes out, they'll re-run the 1st half in theaters. I don't want to pop my cherry on something as subpar as the TV or my laptop screen.

Also, for all the relatively lackluster reviews that is the rare for a Nolan flick, I still want to see Tenet on the big screen.

It's equally likely that either a) the cinema I went to doesn't implement IMAX as well as is claimed, or b) I'm just a picky c##t.

In the likely event that it's option b, I'll try and explain what I mean with a diagram.

It sounded to me, a bit like the frequencies in the blue area, are boosted up volume-wise to be audible (instead of simply being 'feelable'), and this was at the expense of sounds in the red area which became harder to perceive. The net effect was 'more' bass, and 'less' speech and ambient sound. Back in my days of selling HiFi and Home Theatre, I'd liken this to having shitty satellite speakers, and a sub that was turned right up, with the cross-over frequency set way too low.

... I suppose it's also possible I'm just going a bit deaf though :D

Lovely explanation - thanks. I have to say that I’ve always found IMAX to be deliberately “rumbly” in order to create that “atmosphere”.
But I can’t recall battling with the higher frequency ranges such as the whispered speech.
The thing is, despite my appreciation of good audio (I’ve had limited exposure to some truly amazing kit) I’m not sure that my ears are the best judge of audio quality. I reckon that blindfolded I’d struggle to tell the difference between Tidal and Apple lossless. I put this down to my brief stint in the artillery, to a far lesser extent, and my night club days, to a far greater extent.

Rock concerts are also a big contributor to the progressive loss of hearing.

Phantasm, 1979. They don`t make horror films like they used to.
I remember seeing this on tv when I was really young. It's funny and cheesy now. 6/10

Watched Dune on Amazon. Quite a convincing adaptation to my eyes. Eager to see the next !

Just FYI, lots of ppl don`t know you can rent moves off Youtube. Cast off your phone to your TV.
GoogleTV is another app to stream newer movies. I believe the two are the same. (Sony TVs have the google tv app built-in)

I just checked out Dune for the first time.
This newer version breaks down the storyline better than the old one. The visuals are pretty fantastic too, especially in 4k.
(The old one from 1984 was flawed in a lot of ways but the character interactions and emotions were a bit more thought out IMO.)
Overall I still like the new one. 8.0/10

It's I believe nominated for the Oscar for best movie as well. Did you check it on YT in 4K @GTA45E ?

I have a Prime subscription but you somehow don't get all the content for free, I have to pay for Dune which IMO is BS (same price as what BYT asks I believe).

I also have Prime with Amazon.
It is standard that you have to pay for movies, especially the new ones.

I actually rented Dune off the Google app on my TV. Google offers rentals for the same price as Amazon but in 4k.
At the end of the movie, I clicked Dune 2021 on Youtube and it started playing again. YouTube and Google give you 48hrs to watch the movie you rented as many times as you like.

Edit: @klier, I didn`t answer your question about Dune 2021 and seeing it in 4k on YouTube, Yes, it is in 4k.
YouTube is hard on older smart TVs, some of the older sets have buffer issues because of the slow precessors.

If you get around to it please see the old one, if not before the new one. It is very 80s of course if that matters. The new one definitely pays homage to the original.

Anyone saw The Batman yet?
I did. I was surprised, it was good. Good cast, Pattinson was also not bad. Very dark and a bit retro inspired. Not as good as trilogy from Nolan and Bale(I don't know if anyone will ever top it in next Batman movies), but a very good new fresh take...

Has anyone seen Everything,Everywhere all at Once?
We don't get it till May. Looks bizarre and original in a good way.
