ID. Buzz The Electric VW ID BUZZ

Looks absolutely terrible

I wouldn't say it looks terrible, but isn't nice at all. So hyped, yet I fail to see the homage to the T1. To my eyes, a VW Bulli looks better and much more "Volkswagen" (at least, current era VW) thant this one. Also hated the colors, looks like a first gen Imac

predictably massive incentives for large fleets (Post AG, Bahn AG, armed forces, municipal and communal vehicles, etc...) and it could be quite the success after all.
But this vehicle is aiming at the cheeky end of things. Makes as much sense as buying a Land Rover for doing an artic trip.
DHL/Deutsche post already has electric van and trucks (don't know the brand), don't see them paying extra for a fancy VW.
In any case, the van use by Moia makes much more sense.....

I personally wouldn't go as far as saying that the rudimentary panel BUZZ Cargo would be "too cheeky" for DHL/Deutsche Post AG fleets. A "Buy German" consideration may also come into play. We can rest assured that VW Commercial Vehicles will be "very accomodating" regarding the conditions of any contract coming to fruition.

Indeed, MOIA will be a recipient of the BUZZ. It will accompany the fleet of e-Crafters.

I am actually coming round to like this now. As some are used for private transportation in Berlin. At first I thought it would be a pastiche of the old Kombi like the Beetle. But it’s actually growing on me. Seems to be popular too. Early examples are commanding a premium.
Will need to borrow one for a weekends camping to see if it lives up to its many successors reputations.

I think a better and larger colour palette would be nice. Also cannot seem to configure one with a panoramic roof yet.

I don't know if I would have one, I don't think so, but I love that it exists, bi-color and all the little things that they put emulating the classic, welcome, I would like to see many on the street, like with the "New" bettle in both generations I think they wear and give freshness to the environment and the vehicle fleet in cities

The thing is, it doesn’t look like the classic at all. Looks like a VW Bulli (which is already sold in two color scheme) with a cartoonish face inspired by the Cars movie. This isn’t Fiat 500, Mini or New Beetle…..

And on my personal opinion, VW should have aimed at the T3’s styling, because the generation that grow with that car is now in his 40s and 50s and most likely to buy a Van than the older folks.
And according to me, the angular, 80s style still looks like “future”
Just look at Hyundai’s Ioniq 5, or their fuell cell DeLorean/Giugiaro wannabe concept:

I wonder if they retained the Orange colour in memory of the kombi that used to sit outside a Berlin gay club in the early eighties that used to hand out contraceptives and sell sex toys from inside?

In West Berlin ? Which club, would have to be something in Schöneberg I guess.

I doubt that’s where they would draw inspiration from but interesting story anyway.

So where are the bigger ones and the ones with a panoramic roof ?

Well, the ID BUZZ is turning out to be an epic flop. Sad for a product that is fundamantally promising. But alas, naive and greedy pricing and poor marketing on the part of VAG results in a genuine "BUZZ kill". Corporate "strategists" turning out to be...well...not quite that at all.

Wow this is shocking, I was really hoping for some success for VW for this vehicle, it looks fantastic and the best looking VW bus since the 70s Kombi.

Indeed, when the ID BUZZ was first presented, I suspected that it would be a very successful vehicle for VW, especially the commercial configurations. But when the pricing was disclosed, doubts began to creep in. And those doubts have since been justified. Of course, much that was not entirely the fault of VAG threw some wrenches into the cogworks as well. Hence, some simple bad luck has also been involved.

Can you say why is it a flop?

I have seen lots of them on the streets. And I checked the stats : 35000 units sold in 2023.

35k is a flop? For a EV van? For a niche car?

BMW can't manage to sell that many 7 series , and that has a way larger clientele than ID buzz

IMO , ID buzz is a real success. If it had a bigger battery , I would have bought one myself ( I had a Viano for years, and currently looking for a new van ) .

For the year 2023, total registrations in Germany for the VW T6 Transporter amounted to some 156,900 units. 91,500 VW Caddys were newly registered and 66,500 Crafters + 26.000 MAN TGEs can be added. This compares to 28,600 ID BUZZ registrations (windowed vans/family vans + commercial panel delivery vehicles). *Source:vanexperten.de

Commercial applications of the ID BUZZ are not intended to be "niche cars". The intention was to quickly replace commercial ICE/Hybrid vans that predominantly navigated urban/suburban areas. So far, that mission has not been accomplished. As mentioned before, this is not a predictament caused exclusively by VWs haughty, lofty sales price policies. Much can be accounted to less than optimal turns in current events, a serious economic recession and meandering regulators.

Incidentally, VW just announced the presentation of a smaller batteried, somewhat less expensive variant of the ID BUZZ. Primarily for use as a commercial vehicle in urban environments.

We are not talking here about the comercial van. That is a even bigger niche. Because electric EVs are still not feasible .

I don't know where does vanexperten.de takes their data , but I think it's Internet Explorer. Because we are already on the T7 gen.

And T7 Multivan ( a similar category as ID Buzz ) , sold in 2023 81.203 in total. This includes all version ( Caravelle/Multivan, Combi, California ) .

ID Buzz with 35.272 total sold in 2023 is faaaar from a flop. It's almost half of all Multivans sold. And Multivan comes in many "shapes"

And it looks horrible. Absolutely butchered compared to the concept to make it look like a cheap knock off. Another bland ID line car, and from the pics the cheap plastics of the interior SCREAM at me to stay away.

Looks absolutely terrible considering what it's supposed to be after a decade of hype and pretty concepts. Slaughtered by the bean counters; it looks completely cheap in execution (which it is, the EV tech is what costs them dearly).

Oh well, on to the next horrible looking VW product. Only one left to like is the Polo.

I was insane when I wrote this and I feel sorry for myself.

The fun part (fun because an EV commercial vehicle is the epitome of niche) is they aren't niche here in the Randstad, where there are more EV chargers than trees and the distances are short no matter what you do. I can literally name three companies all within a 5 minute walk from where I live who use ID BUZZ commercial versions. The car is extremely popular here in The Netherlands. They are everywhere. Both versions.

And I believe there are actual waiting lists for the regular passenger version of the ID BUZZ, the only VW with that luxury. Some plants have to close for lack of demand (the ID3 plant), whereas other plants can't cope with demand. Great times over at VAG.
