Vs Test: M3 vs. Audi RS5 review

Let me ask the other way round then: What options were missing in the M3 to make the comparison not 'valid'?

Was the M3 a fully loaded example like the RS5?

If so then it's weight was extremely suspect don't you think?

Again, you cant really compare if the tests wasn't done in same conditions. Compare a time done one year ago with a time today isnt exactly comparable.

Doenst matter if the RS5 lost another 50 kg, the M3 CS would still beat it in this test. Footie, you have to wait for another test cause now your arguments are a failure ;)

If you have read most of my comments on the introduction of the 'competition package' and why BMW didn't increase the power then you would know why my argument isn't a failure. BMW did all that was needed to keep the M3 competitive, but comparing a fully loaded RS5 with a lean M3 is not like for like. That is why we need a similarly specced RS5 to see how close their respective performances truly are.

Like I said before, it had options 'worth' EUR 26k, what could possibly be left out, even if considering the special paint?

It weighed roughly 30kg more than the 6MT M3 from the Supertest, what's suspect about that?

Both cars were fully loaded, the RS5 even had the Recaros and the ceramic discs, so I can't follow how this could be considered an unfair comparison.

All I hear is lame ass excuses. I bet if it was a base RS5 we would be now hearing how it didn't have the right options. I bet having ceramic brakes and sports seats saved more weight than taking out a few luxury options (what ever they were - I still don't now what luxury options RS5 had that M3 didn't). The bottom line is the RS5 got owned big time.

It wont help. M3 is still a lighter car. You will never see a stripped RS5 being tested, for your sake I hope there will be a RS5+ one day ;)
You will never see tests were the cars will match in weight. If going by your arguments you should use your arguments in every single test, like GTR vs 911 TT and Gallardo vs ZR1 and all those performance tests you read.
M3 CS beat the RS5 in this test and thats a fact. M3 = 1, RS5 = 0 :D

PS EVO has a future test between a M3, RS5 and C63. Keep your eyes open for that one.

I don't from which of his nether regions Footie manufacturer's this bs excuse about how both cars were not similarly speced? Both cars had about 26500 euros worth of options. Of this, RS5 had more performance oriented options than the M3.

Here is the break down.

RS5: Ceramic brakes - 6000 euros, 20" wheels - 1600 euros, Sports diff - 950 euros, Bucket seats - 2800 euros (big weight saving cause not only is lighter than normal seats, but also comes with out side impact air bags saving even more weight) Carbon package for engine bay - 500 (Not a big performance advantage, but doesn't hurt performance either) So that is a total 11850 euros worth of performance oriented options (not sure if the car had dynamic steering or sports exhausts, so I didn't count them).

All the M3 has that is performance oriented is: Competition package 4300 euros (which comes with bigger wheels and EDC) DCT 3900. For a total for 7200 euros worth of performance oriented options.

So that means M3 probably had about 5000 more euros worth of options than RS5 that didn't contribute to performance. So there goes the excuse the RS5 got owned cause it was between a luxury optioned RS5 vs stripped out M3.

ps. if anyone who can read German can add any other options the cars had, that would be great.

Yeah yeah, sure :t-upside:

RS5 is not a Russian Lada, we all know this.

At times I seriously wonder what you contribute to any discussion.

P.S.
Just to add to this discussion, a member of RS6.com has taken the time to check which comparison times were conducted on the same day and the results are very interesting as it appears the RS5 in general is ever so slightly quicker on the day but as I say it's so close as to not really make or break anyone's decision as to which to buy based on speed alone. :t-cheers:

P.S
Was at the Ireland vs France rugby match yesterday (great match) but on the two hour journey home we fell in with an RS6 Avant, man can that thing go :ylsuper:. At the slightly whiff of a gap opening up it gone.

What both these comparisons prove is the M3 and RS5 are so close in their respective performance abilities is that you simply chose the one that appeals to you best in the knowledge that either way you are getting a great motorcar.
Exactly :)
And in this case it seems difficult/wrong to say that one is noticeably faster than the other : its depends of the test and car.
2 cars of the same model don't have always exactly the same performances and it's and it is useful to talk about ranges of results or averages values ;)

Hands down respect to the M3.

The Audi RS5 is a beautiful car and should be a nice drive all year around.

^^
If one thing is certain,it's that the RS5 has proved itself a worthy competitor to the M3,but one would'nt cheat themselves by choosing one over the other.

How much longer does the current M3 have before end of production?

Not much longer, the current 3 series is nearing the end of its life cyle.

According to SCOTT the new 3er Coupe will debut in early 2013 (which is right on schedule considering the traditional 7-year lifecycle). So if we assume BMW follows the usual plan (as with the M5), the M3 Coupe should be presented in early 2014.
