That's extremely clever. However, to break-even with solar+battery in 5-10 years instead of 20-30 years, the house must be very electricity dependent. In the UK most houses have gas hobs and use gas to heat hot water - making it challenging to fully exploit solar electricity.

Tesla unveiled their Urban Chargers today. Now that they have a reasonably good network of superchargers for intercity travel, Tesla is now focusing on building charging infrastructure within urban cities.

• Smaller footprint compared to Tesla Superchargers. Less space, cheaper and much faster to deploy.
• Will mostly be installed at Shopping Malls, Supermarkets & downtown locations.
• Consistent Charge rate of 72KW (as opposed to 120kW-145KW on Superchargers)
• Supercharger credit for Model 3 owners will also be applicable to Urban Chargers.

Edit: Updated Supercharger Map: YES!! Also expanding superchargers across Canada (trans Canada highway!) and Mexico too!

Edit: Owners in Boston & Chicago are already using them. Size is even smaller than I expected.

Some Australians that ordered the powerwall 2 have been receiving invitations to a Tesla event at the Hornsdale wind farm where Tesla is building the largest battery in the world (100 MegWatt = 100,000 KW).

Tesla envisions Supercharger rest stations

Adding food, beverages and bathrooms could mitigate impatience among owners waiting for their EV to charge.

Just months after implementing fees to minimize time spent at Supercharger stations, Tesla now envisions the sites as rest areas where visitors can get a bite to eat and relax while waiting for their car to charge.

The company outlined its vision for convenience store integration at a recent food-tech conference, according to a Restaurant Business report spotted by GrubStreet.

"People are coming and spending 20 to 30 minutes at these stops," said Tesla CTO JB Straubel. "They want to eat, they want to have a cup of coffee, and they want to use the bathroom."

Some Model S and X owners had complained of long lines at the busiest Supercharger stations, pointing out that some cars were left for hours after the battery was done charging. Some owners, apparently, were using the chargers as free parking while shopping or dining nearby.

As Tesla begins to ramp up Model 3 production, there will soon be a ten-fold increase in potential Supercharger users. The company has promised to double down on site expansion, planning to build nearly 5,000 more Superchargers globally this year alone. The full-scale sites will be supplemented by an additional 6,000 'destination' sites at restaurants, hotels and other businesses.

The buildout will also finally focus on urban areas, addressing the lack of home charging infrastructure for many city dwellers.

Tesla has not disclosed specific details of its intention to build convenience stores at certain locations. Such large-scale projects may be put on the back burner until the expansion strategy matures beyond quantity-focused rapid growth.

Who the f. will give them money to finance that? They have no money to invest on their own. They can sign a joint-venture with some grocery / restaurant chain instead. Or perhaps Tesla now also has aspirations to enter restaurant / retail business? C'mon. That's beyond stupid. They even have to issue junk bonds to get money for financing the primary business: making cars etc. Elon's ideas are all over the place ...

If a customer is likely to need to charge on a journey, Tesla needs to create a software that alerts users if nearby super chargers are full or likely to be congested.

That's basic. I thought they'd already had that. They don't? I can hardly believe it. If they don't that's superlame.

Also ... I thought in US the Tesla superchargers were located @ test stations, motels, hotels etc. At least in Europe are.

Elon is still a (petrol/old school? *not sure what to say) car guy at heart.

Throughout the 2000's his daily was a 997 Cabrio; bet he won't say that today.

Why tax EV's based on weight ?
They "take a toll on the roads" !? Some heavy BS.
Are ICE cars over 2 tons penalised too ?

I think the point is, because ICE cars already generate more tax revenue they contribute to those costs already.

One way or another they need tax money for infrastructure.

What's the point of subsidizing the EVs and then applying some special tax on them???? o_O

It should be much easier to make different subsidy brackets for different EVs - eg. giving more subsidy to more efficient & lighter EVS, and (much) less subsidy to heavier and / or less efficient EVs. Or giving much less or none subsidy to luxury (with MSRP over certain limit) EVs. Problem solved.

Yes, and Earth-to-Earth intercity taxi rockets. Sure. Next week? Intergalactic warp speed travelling? He must be smoking something strong, lol.

I think he secretly sniffs rocket fuel from a brown paper bag.

His progress with Tesla is admirable but he needs to be cautious of distracting himself from the important task at hand which is ramping up Model 3 production so that he can move on to launching a road map for new models. Consumers like change and in 6-9 year he'll need decent selection of cars that customers can choose from when their Model 3 or Model X lease is up. It's the one area where the big giants could have a big upper hand once electric cars are mainstream. VW have already pledged three electric car models for 2020-2022.
