Indeed, this is a bridge to far. What a piece o shite BMW. A fugly breadvan. A perfect reason to keep your 3er buyers from going into the showroom. I still can't believe my eyes.
Yeah... an SUV was too far too. Now the guys cursing BMW back in 2000 are all driving X5s and X3s
The F20 was far too ugly for most... people are now OK with it. People are easy to brainwash.
FWD BMW Breadvan!? People will adore it sooner or later. It's the customer's fault.
Some already go like "I'm old enough to not care for driving dynamics" or "It has LEDs and comes standard with an iPad glued to its dash!!!! RWD WHAT!?"
If there's a smart phone in your pocket then it most probably is your fault too. Now we should all take it in the a$$.
I am and was a 3-Series owner. Currently drive a 330d(not my own car tho) and have a 320d on order for my company. I own the E21 3-Series Alpina B6 too.I don't think it's the fault of consumers that BMW chose to produce this model. Unless you can provide evidence that consumers have been writing letters to BMW HQ demanding the brand make MPVs.... This is a very well established automotive segment with plenty of cars from different brands to choose from. BMW made a choice to enter this market. I think the issue that people on this forum have is that the 2 series GT doesn't seem to stand for anything that BMWs traditionally have stood for. What is unique about this car? Nothing so far as I can tell. It's FWD. The Golf SV, the C-Max, B-Class, they all do the same thing that this car does. So BMW hopes to lure those car buyers into their showroom. Got it.
"We want a FWD MPV which dilutes the brand." said no BMW 3 series owner, ever.

I want a BMW MPV and more BMW SUVs. I will be the first to buy an X7 if it looks decent and has a V12 option.
Some customers I know want a BMW MPV for their wives or even themselves.
BMW as almost any other company in the world is driven by customer demand. If there is no demand there will be no offering.
PS: I hate the idea of FWD BMWs. I hate the idea of turbo'ed M3s and I really, really hate ugly looking cars...
I'll most probably own all of the above... heck I even own a "smart" phone.
So many contradictions but I get your point. You want a BMW for every occasion and maybe you're right that others feel the same as you do. In reading your post I have realized that I have very poor brand loyalty. If I were in the market for an MPV I would simply buy the car that was the most practical (because otherwise why in the f*** would you buy a car like this?). I don't want a BMW because of the badge, I want a BMW because it drives like my mom's 3 series or my dad's old E32 7 series... Those cars are befitting of a BMW badge. They were designed with a philosophy, a purpose. The 2 series was built because BMW is chasing profit margins. Fair enough, it's a company. But I think they've done a poor job at making it a car worthy of a BMW badge.
I have no problem with the 2AT or that BMW is going FWD for this model or smaller models in general. As long as mine is staying RWd it is OK for me.I am and was a 3-Series owner. Although the 2AT hasn't the driving dynamics of a Ford C-max (press) it drivers well.
This Grand Tourer on the other hand looks like an Opel/Vauxal Zafira and driving dynamics should even be worse than the 2AT.
I don't think the 3er will get FWD. the 1er yes, but the 3er will stay RWD in my opinion.I agree. It's awful in so many ways but it is obviously right in so many ways for so many people.
We are living in an era where the roadster is a dying breed. SUVs are the new sedans and it ain't Hyper if it ain't Hybrid...
Nothing is the same... nothing. Even the 3-Series won't remain RWD. BMW themselves state that it's safe for the next 10 years. What comes after!?
People will buy FWD 3-Series like hotcakes as long as it has 7G connectivity, is priced right, drives like a sofa, is hybrid and has the badge. Another "Bonus" is that it's now "safe to drive" for every idiot/average Joe out there thinking RWD is unsafe...
