G-Class [Spyshots] 2018 Mercedes-Benz G-Class (W464)

The Mercedes-Benz G-Class, colloquially known as the G-Wagon or G-Wagen (as an abbreviation of Geländewagen), is a four-wheel drive luxury SUV manufactured by Magna Steyr (formerly Steyr-Daimler-Puch) in Graz, Styria, Austria, and sold by Mercedes-Benz. Originally developed as a military off-roader, later more luxurious models were added to the line. In certain markets, it was sold under the Puch name as Puch G until 2000.

All-New 2019 Mercedes-Benz G-Class Said To Debut At 2018 Detroit Show

The development of the new generation Mercedes-Benz G-Class is far more advanced than initially thought, as the SUV will reportedly debut as early as January next year.
report published by Drive, the 2019 Mercedes-Benz G-Class will sit in front of the audience at the 2018 Detroit Auto Show, parading its first major redesign since it was introduced back in 1979.

Despite being entirely new, both on the outside and in the cabin, the new generation of the popular 4x4 will retain the boxy design that made it famous, albeit with modern touches, and a slightly larger footprint.

Its off-road potential is expected to be enhanced with a new independent suspension, increased wheel travel, improved departure angles, and water fording depth that will receive another 100mm, or almost 4 inches. Additionally, it will benefit from a clever four-wheel drive system, with three differential locks and low range gearing, and some models will get the 9-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

Besides the usual assortment of petrol and diesel powertrains, the new generation Mercedes-Benz G-Class will also come with a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 engine, developed by AMG. The unit is expected to power the G500, making over 400hp, and it will also be used on the new G63, where it's believed to churn out more than 600hp.

Major Details Emerge About New Mercedes G-Class

New engines will sit on ladder frame chassis and hide under familiar boxy shape.
After revealing the G-Class Limited Edition as a swan song for the current generation of the off-roader, Mercedes-Benz is now channeling all its efforts towards the replacement of the boxy vehicle. A truly new G-Class is expected to be unveiled at the Detroit Motor Show in January next year and, thanks to a new report from Drive, we can share some important preliminary details about the Land Rover Defender’s only true competitor today.

The publication is revealing that, contrary to previous reports, the vehicle will retain its ladder frame chassis construction, albeit heavily optimized and modified compared to the current model. It will be combined with an aluminum body structure, resulting in significantly improved crash integrity and on-road comfort, and, of course, reduced weight.

For the new G-Class, Mercedes-Benz wants to guarantee it remains super capable once it leaves the asphalt, so it will continue to sell it with low range gearing and three differential locks across the lineup. This will be combined with a rugged appearance, as the model will remain faithful to its roots with a boxy body shape and the same 0.54 drag coefficient as today’s G-Class.

Speaking of the body, the new G-Class will grow slightly to provide more room in the interior. However, the increased dimensions won’t affect the capabilities of the vehicle, as nearly every single off-road angle will be improved, if only marginally, compared to the current model.

As far as the engine range is concerned, the new G-Class will be launched with the company’s 4.0-liter turbocharged V8 in various output options and the new 2.9-liter inline-six diesel. Both they will provide a lot of torque in all versions with the most powerful planned to be the G63 with 602 horsepower (450 kilowatts) and 627 pound-feet (850 Newton-meters) of torque. Also in the cards is Mercedes’ new 3.0-liter gasoline motor with an integrated starter generator for mild hybrid functions.

A major improvement is planned for the steering system, too. The ancient recirculating ball system of today’s G-Class will be replaced by an electro-mechanical rack and pinion setup, which, in combination with an improved suspension for the front axle, will provide better precision and a massive reduction in the turning circle.

I never knew the drag coefficient of the G was .54

That's hilarious; almost literally as aerodynamic as a brick.

Mercedes is all set to launch the new G early next year, as part of it they started this video series.

It's still a parts bin special lol, but it will be so much more modern and have all the features every other Benz has.

Lol it really is. “Reuse as many already existing parts as possible” was definitely the mission brief. Makes sense they cut corners here given the platform itself can’t be shared with anything else.

Are you guys liking this?

So much laziness for an iconic car, I think the accountant designed the interior :banghead:

Hope the new one will have a way better ride. I really wanted to buy the current G but when I drove it, felt like a buggy car.

I love it. Still waffling between putting a deposit down on a G550 or an AMG G63. I want to get rid of my Range Rover. The new steering system, increased width, and independent front suspension will go a long way to making this a better vehicle to drive.

Parts bin special - yes. But far more cohesive than the outgoing G.

I hope dual 12.3 displays will be an option, because I've yet to see it in any of the spyshots.

The previous G had interior that was ok in 2008-2010 and still people like it and buy it, this is far better and won't be outdated. I mean if I want screen in G it's better to borrow from E class than A class.

An option? It should be standard given the price tag.

Point. Yea, I don't want to see those circa 2000's analog guages in the "all-new" $120k+ G-Class, along with empty black plastic in between as further insult.

Also, a plastic airbag cover when they could've used the S-class' leather cover. It's the same steering wheel...

I wonder if they'll give it E-class seats or seats from the upcoming GLE. No way it's getting S-class seats.
