G-Class [Spyshots] 2018 Mercedes-Benz G-Class (W464)

The Mercedes-Benz G-Class, colloquially known as the G-Wagon or G-Wagen (as an abbreviation of Geländewagen), is a four-wheel drive luxury SUV manufactured by Magna Steyr (formerly Steyr-Daimler-Puch) in Graz, Styria, Austria, and sold by Mercedes-Benz. Originally developed as a military off-roader, later more luxurious models were added to the line. In certain markets, it was sold under the Puch name as Puch G until 2000.

G class with Panamericana grill is so unusual...can't imagine in my mind how it will look. The render above is nice, nothing radical...what do they say about GLG?

Perhaps it was switched because Project One may have overshadowed it? :)

They are speculating about a smaller G, based on the new GLE, and to arrive around 2020. Maybe for folks missing the GLK? :)

Then what will happen with GLB, that one was supposed to be a mini G class (in terms of styling)?

2019 Mercedes-AMG G-Class Spotted With Production Lights

open.webp

It looks like Mercedes is putting the final pieces of the G-Class puzzle together in the latest set of spy shots, with two prototypes spotted in standard and AMG guises, wearing their final production lights.
independent front suspension which will allow the 2019 G-Class to drive less like a truck and more like a modern SUV.

The engine range will include Mercedes’ latest turbocharged straight-six units while the full AMG version will be powered by the twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8, complete with the always awesome side exhausts.

The go-faster version of the G-Class will also be fitted with wider fenders and chunkier bumpers while the front grille will be different from standard models as well. Let’s hope Mercedes doesn’t use the curvy Panamericana grille here too, as we’re not sure how it will fit with the whole box-on-wheels style.

We’ve taken a peek inside on an earlier scoop, where we saw a dashboard featuring a similar layout with the latest Mercedes models, complete with a widescreen infotainment screen sitting next to the instrument binnacle.

Mercedes will continue building the new G-Class in Magna’s plant in Austria, with the latest reports saying that the current G-Class might still be produced alongside the new model in a more bare-bones version.

I know it's 10 cm wider but what about its length and height?

2019 Mercedes-Benz G-Class Caught in Traffic Looks Ready to Debut in Detroit

Mercedes-Benz is just months away from introducing the first all-new G-Class incarnation since the 1979 original. And we can now show you a prototype of the 2019 G Wagen, with the terrain tamer having been spotted in German traffic this week.

While the boxy styling cues of the test car are still covered in camouflage, we can see the production LED taillights on the prototype. Keep in mind that we've previously shown you a W464 Mercedes-AMG G63 prototype sporting LED front and rear light clusters, along with a Panamericana front grille.

The W464 incarnation of the Gelandewagen is rumored to make its official debut at the 2018 North American Auto Show. And once the Detroit introduction takes place, the terrain tamer is expected to reach dealers across the Old Continent in May next year.

Forum chat out there also mentions the three-pointed star keeping the current W463 G-Class in production after the new model is introduced. We'll remind you that the SUV is brought to the world by the automaker's Magna Steyr partner, with the latter's Graz production site in Austria having hit the 300,000 unit milestone earlier this year.

Then again, with the Mercedes-AMG G65 range topper now being offered in Final Edition form (only 65 units are being introduced) and the Mercedes-Benz G500 4×4² production set to end soon, rumors such as the one mentioned above need to be taken with a grain of salt.

Returning to the 2019 G-Class, the generation change will bring a fresh platform, which is expected to help the offroader shed up to 400 kg (880 lbs).

The diet will help the vehicle improve its fuel efficiency, while, on the performance front, the next Mercedes-AMG G63 might rival the base Porsche 911 Carrera 0-60 mph sprint time.

Speaking of which, the G63 will lose the current twin-turbo 5.5-liter V8 for the M177 twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 and we're expecting the SUV to pack just under 600 hp.

As for the cabin changes, these range from the increased width brought by the new platform, while the G-Class interior will make an upmarket move, for instance packing E-Class Coupe-like air conditioning vents.

Will the G-Class retain its trio of locking differentials in order to please offroading purists? We can't wait to find out.

Spyshots: 2019 Mercedes-AMG G63 Looking All Bossy and Godlike at Nurburgring

There's nothing wrong in being a BMW or Audi fan, but if you're so blind as to not love the Mercedes-Benz G-Class, then that makes you a troll. Particularly since neither of those German premium brands has a direct competitor for the Gelandewagen, and most definitely never will.

How can we be so sure? That's because you can't build something now, out of the blue, that could compete with decades of tradition. Even if BMW, to pick one, were to build a rugged off-road capable SUV, how would it style it? With modern looks? How is that a G-Class competitor? Would the Bavarians use a legacy approach? What legacy? The brand has no history building this type of vehicles.

No, BMW and Audi are smart enough to stay out of it and focus on filling other niches (such as Audi is doing with the Q8 or BMW with the 2 Series Active and Grand Tourer). The G-Wagen is the untouchable, and even its rivals can respect that.

For this new model, Mercedes-Benz has prepped everything from scratch - or so it says - making it the first complete makeover since its initial commercial launch in 1979. But don't expect this exhaustive transformation to show on the outside - the design elements that made the G-Class the legend it is are going nowhere.

The SUV is growing in all directions but also promises to shed a few pounds - as many as 880 (or 400 kg), if rumors turn out to be true. That should help with its fuel efficiency first and foremost, but it dynamic performance should also receive a bump since that's a lot of weight even for a car this size.

With Mercedes-Benz busy spreading the new inline-six engines across the range, the 2019 G-Class will see those units replace the current V6 options, but you're probably more interested to know what happens to the AMG G 63model.

We are as well since all we know right now is that it will use the 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 engine and an AMG-fiddled version of the 9G-TRONIC automatic transmission. The power output could be anything up to the 612 hp found in the Mercedes-AMG E 63 S, or the Affalterbach engineers might choose to dial it down a little.

Whatever the case, the new G 63 will be a fast machine in a straight line with those side exhaust taking care of the aural drama. Just like its predecessor, don't expect it to be a driver's car, though, and bending should still be a very tilting experience despite possible advancements in the suspension area as well.

While the exterior design will change completely and yet remain the same, the interior will only do the former. Expect new everything as the G-Class will fall in line with the rest of the Mercedes-Benz/AMG lineup regarding cabin feel. We'll just have to wait and see how the latest curvy interior design fits the G-Wagen, but we should probably relax and trust the men on the task.

The Mercedes-Benz G-Class is slated for an early 2018 release at the Detroit Auto Show, which means there are just two short months separating us from that moment. In the meantime, all we can do is sit and wait and hope it either drops some of the camo or someone leaks a few naked pictures.
