looking at the pic where the current G550 is in the background, i see abolutely no difference, other than the camo.

New car is much wider, but I guess it's difficult to see in these pics.

Anyways, not being able to see a difference with a 40 year old design is the biggest plus I could think of for this particular car. Absolutely love it!

Can't wait to see more.

Long-wheelbase next-gen Mercedes G-Class spied for the first time
There's a ton of extra room at the back. There might even be enough to add an extra row of seats.

Photos have shown the next-generation Mercedes-Benz G-Class testing multiple times throughout the year, but our spies recently had a big surprise when Mercedes unloaded a long-wheelbase variant from a hauler. This is the first look we are getting at this larger Geländewagen.

From the front, this test mule looks practically identical to previously spied examples of the next G-Class. The only minor tweak is the single-bar grille as opposed to the three-slat or open design on other examples. However, this vehicle has quite a bit of extra room on the back, and there isn’t a spare wheel on the rear. Mercedes’ camouflage is quite effective and makes it impossible to notice any styling changes at the tail.

Given how much length that Mercedes adds to the back, the long-wheelbase G-Class would certainly offer more room for rear passengers and maybe better cargo capacity, too. It’s even possible that the extra real estate could allow for a third row of seats.

A long-wheelbase G-Class would presumably ride on a stretched version of the new underpinnings for the standard model. The latest chassis reportedly saves at least 440 pounds (200 kilograms) or much more over the outgoing version. Overall width is allegedly about four inches (10 centimeters) more than the current model.

We can’t know yet whether Mercedes would offer an AMG variant of the long-wheelbase G-Class, but if the automaker does it would probably share the biturbo 4.0-liter V8 with the regular-size next-gen G63. Depending on application, the powerplant can make as much as 603 horsepower (450 kilowatts) in current models like the E63.

The standard G-Class should debut in the latter portion of 2017. Since this is the first time we are seeing the long-wheelbase variant, its development might not be as far along. Don’t expect to see the larger version premiere until sometime in 2018 at the earliest and perhaps even later.

(Although I do agree the car from the spy pics could be some kind of M-Bach version, or ELWB 4 seat version).

The Alpha Phoenix is stretched by 45 cm / 17.7" I believe. Some pics from its intro. :)

2018 Mercedes G-Class 4x4² spied as double cab pickup?
It seems the Mercedes 'G-Class Squared' will spawn a more utilitarian version with the same boxy design we all love.
The elongated G-Wagen was caught on camera for the first time exactly a month ago and at that moment it was believed to be a long-wheelbase G. However, now we’re not so sure because this new test vehicle is giving us the impression we’re dealing with a double cab pickup rather than simply a stretched G500 4x42. Either way, it seems Mercedes has plans to diversify the G-Class family for the off roader’s next generation slated to come out most likely in the second half of the year. That being said, we will probably have to wait until 2018 to see this new derivative bound to adopt the hardcore portal axles of the regular 4x42 model.

Another certainty is the boxy shape of the body, which thankfully will continue in the G-Class’ next installment. While the design will be largely carried over, there are going to be some major changes underneath the familiar metal seeing as how the G will be blessed with new underpinnings. A massive weight loss of at least 440 pounds (200 kilograms) has been mooted, but we’ll have to wait and see whether this report will pan out. If it will, the diet will be even more impressive after taking into consideration the new G-Class will be about 4 inches (10 centimeters) wider than the outgoing “463” model, which has been around since 1990.

In regards to what will power it, the G63 is expected to lose the biturbo 5.5-liter V8 in favor of Mercedes-AMG’s new biturbo 4.0-liter V8 already available in a multitude of performance models. The top dog G65 will solider on with the mighty V12, but only very few will get that. The bread and butter of the range will be a diesel, which is expected to take the shape of an all-new inline-six (yes, you’ve read that right). Codenamed “OM 656,” the new motor will debut this year in the S-Class facelift and is going to generate more than 313 hp (230 kW).

The revamped Mercedes G-Class in the regular versions will likely receive its world premiere at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September, with sales to kick off before the year’s end or early 2018.

The extra width is going to be brilliant. I can't wait to see what they do with the interior.

^ Believe the Landaulet may be based on an extended version of the Mercedes G 500 4x4². Might also be related to the Brabus/Wolf G 500 6.1 Doka? :)
