2015 Audi Q3 Facelift Prototype Shows All-New Audi SUV Design Language

First shown in 2011, Audi's Q3 baby SUV is due for a makeover and we have the first photos previewing the changes that are about to be made.

Audi's facelifts are usually dull and lack major changes. Not these ones though. A new design language is peaking from underneath the camouflage and will likely also influence the upcoming new Q7 full-size model.

What the heck are we talking about? It's simple, really: the grille has a more 3-dimensional effect and are connected to the headlights through a strip of trim. We've seen the design on numerous renderings from German and American publications over the past year, leading us to believe Audi has let some details slip.

As for the headlights on the prototype, they appear to be the old HID units with new LED accents around the edges, a bit of a a letdown.

Perhaps even more important than the design are the new engines. Q3 buyers are largely people with families who need better fuel economy. Audi will thus likely bring the new EA288 TDI 2-liter TDI and EA888 petrol engines.

This will include a 150 hp 1.4 TFSI base model, a 150 hp base TDI instead of the current 140 hp, a 185 hp top-spec TDI instead of the current 177 hp model and a new, more powerful 2.0 TFSI. All engines will have slightly more torque and up to 15% better fuel economy. Although only rumored, an all-new seven-speed Audi-developed twin-clutch could replace the current six-speed S-tronic double clutch unit.

The new Q3 will be revealed towards the end of the year, most likely at the Paris show in November or just before that on the web. Audi of America has already announced the Q3 small SUV will be sold there as a 2015 model year. However, they didn't show this updated model, which could be delayed another year. Remember, the A8 facelift which Europeans have been buying since 2013 is only now going on sale in the US. The officially presented, non-facelift Q3 for the US will be powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged L4 making 200 hp.

2015 Audi RS Q3 Facelift First Spy Photos: Should Have a New 2.5 TFSI

If you like big power in small German compacts with hatchbacks, you've probably already heard about the RS Q3. It's the first Audi SUV to receive the RS badge, launched last year, during March's Geneva Motor Show.

With a large oval exhaust, aggressive body kit and beefy alloy wheel wrapped in low profile tires, it's pretty cool to look at. And yet because Mercedes-Benz has just launched their GLA 45 AMG with a 360 PS engine, Audi now needs to make changes to the RS Q3 that aren't just minor touchups.

These are the very first photos of the RS Q3 facelift, which we expect will come out in early-to-mid 2015. There are visible cosmetic changes that we need to talk about, but first let's focus on the engine. Currently, the one under the bonnet is a 2.5-liter 5-cylinder TFSI turbo making 310 PS, 30 less than an old TT RS or RS3. It's not only underpowered compared to the AMG, but also struggles to comply with the new Euro 6 standard scheduled for September 2015.

That's why the RS Q3 facelift has to be powered by the new 2.5-liter turbo they're developing for the RS3. In that car, reports suggest 367 PS is the Merc-killing magic number, but the Q will probably "settle" for 340 PS. Torque should also be increased from the current 420 Nm to about 450. Thanks to improved thermal management and the latest technology developed for the EA888 family, fuel consumption should be down about 10%.

With this modded engine and quattro all-wheel drive, the baby Audi will be able to sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.2 seconds. It's not mind-blowingly fast, but it's enough to overtake at absurd speeds on the highway, just as long as you stay under the 250 km/h (155 mph) speed limiter.

Sweeping cosmetic changes are also visible from underneath the camouflage and they include a new grille design and refreshed taillights and headlights. The short strip of white light has to be an LED daytime running light system. A new grille will be installed, larger than before and connected to the headlights, like we've talked during our Q3 facelift story.

The first thing that comes to my mind when being asked "name one exciting thing about Audi" is the 2.5TFSI, the one with the five cylinders. Reading that a new one will be launched is good news.

2017 Audi Q3 Design Will Be Inspired by Ur-Quattro

We're still eagerly awaiting the arrival of the Audi Q3 in America and the debut of a facelift over in Europe. In both cases, Audi stands to make a lot of money by offering premium qualities in small and practical package. However, the automaker is already looking ahead at the next generation car.

While details of its underpinnings and powertrains remain a mystery, we might be able to tell you a little about its design. Marc Lichte, the new Audi head of design, recently told a French magazine that he's a fan of the original Quattro, the legendary all-wheel drive coupe that blitzed both road and track. This will be most obvious in the wheel arches and perhaps in the hind quarters.

Automobile Magazine also claims to have a few tech details. The second generation SUV will be just 1cm longer, but much wider and a little lower, thus improving its diving characteristics. Power will come from a variety of engines, including the 240 hp twin-turbo TDI 2-liter used by the next-gen Passat.

It's not yet certain if the 2.5-liter 5-cylinder TFSI from the RS Q3 will survive being downsized, but a hot model to rival the Mercedes GLA 45 AMG is pretty much a certainty

All this with Audi's design language is too much marketing talk. The design is simple and all these concepts show nothing new - just new lights graphics and new bumpers. It's about time we see something exciting!

Indeed, and who gives a f*ck what possibly happens in three years. It's pure speculation.

Audi Q3 facelift reportedly coming in December
Engine range will likely be carried over
According to a recent report, the Audi Q3 will receive a minor facelift by the end of the year.

Speaking to IndianAutosBlog at the Paris Motor Show, Dr. Ulrich Hackenberg, member of the Board of Management of Audi AG and head of Audi’s Technical Development, said “I think we’re having the facelift in November-December”.

The brand’s entry-level crossover was spied several times this summer and the photos show it will gain new graphics for the headlights and taillights together with slightly altered bumpers. Some changes and updates inside the cabin are also expected.

According to our source, the engine lineup of the facelifted Q3 will likely be carried over from the current model. It will include an assortment of familiar petrol and diesel units, while the range-topping Q3 RS will be powered by a 2.5-liter five-cylinder turbo unit packing 310 HP (228 kW) and 420 Nm (310 lb-ft).
