"Competition makes you fit"

Thanks goodness then that M-B set new standards and the bar HIGH with the W222, kudos. Now Audi and BMW can't skimp on their upcoming offerings.

Honestly, competition between the German brands results in better quality. What is a generalization I know, for the A-class lacks behind the F20 and A3's in tactile cabin quality and the seat rust on the F30's (also F01 LCI) contradict some of my hopes/beliefs. But I guess none of the Big Three can win'em all;)

dunno if u believe it or not, i love my f01 730d, its fuel efficient when i want to 6.9 l/100 km, its sportive when i want to, its comfortable when i want to, it feels like a small car, it never makes me feel old... but the best thing is: i get sad when i think of january 2014 - where i ll get my s-class w222, but then again i m looking forward to 2015:
the new 7s - bmw makes cars with emotions - these cars make me wanna go out and drive some more kms :)

I don't agree with that anymore. Maybe cars with emotions that make me burst in anger so that I get banned?

^emotion and character - i think that's still the case, it's not just made to look dramatic / good, but also with a proper character / emotion that fits. I hope they can keep it up, and fully agree the E38, E39, E46 were the glorious days of BMW, not that current cars are inferior but relative to others, the E38 might not have an overall advantage over the S at the time, but the E39 and E46 were far better than the competition, winning nearly every comparison test in whichever engine category, quality was great, driver's cars, reasonably easy to mod. Best of all, you might say they were one sausage in different sizes, but hey, they had different emotions/characters (and of course size) that separated them apart visually.

+1(y)

Hence the old saying: "Bring Helmut Panke back":)

the e38 was the 7s that made many s-class buyers (ceos, vice presidents, etc.9) swap over to bmw.
i remember the ceo of a consulting company calling me to show me the "sport" button in his brand new bimmer.
but with the w220 and the e65 - merc won the buyers back. i mean really: the e65 was ugly

Can we get back on topic instead of reminiscing and bitching, please?

SCOTT says in the Pininfarina Gran Lusso thread that the 7er will debut in late 2016, as opposed to the the estimate of late 2014, early 2015 put forward by Carmaker1, so which do we think is true?

And here's a quick recap of what SCOTT and EnI have told us about the G11:

Regarding Larson's rendering:
It more or less conforms to the more edgier appearance that comes with the next generation of BMWs.
As LED technology allows for lights to get thinner and more sleeker than before.
However the ideas shown here are but from ONE PROPOSAL that made the final stages.
Some ideas are similar in regards to actual design elements on the final proposals - the high characterline , double bow prominence in the lower flanks and a much lower prominent front end.

I have not seen the finished car but one such person has described it as a sharper looking F01/F02. I have seen the interior and let's just say that some of the advanced technology showcased in the Vision ConnectedDrive such as the interface will no longer be an "oooh & aah" fantasy.
Even more impressive is the body in white which shows the various exotic mix of materials being used. Aluminium , magnesium , thermoplastic press-hardened high strength steel and of course extensive CFRP.
Expect BMW to show this material jigsaw in the countdown to the new model to further alienate competitors.

It's evolutionary but strikingly futuristic especially the front and rear , the lights are slimmer thanks to LED technology.
But if you look at one of the shots from the rear , you can see the larger multimedia screen in the dash.

^ 28/2/'13 ^, citing first spy pics of the G11.

I have been asked what car gives the 7er its appearance? There is certainly elements of current cars progressed but also there are some interesting features such as the more raked forward dynamic look of the rear of the Vision ConnectedDrive concept car when looked at side on.
Aswell as its own features and firsts such as self-drive and added passenger HUD , features introduced in the BMW i8 will also launch with the 7er such as laser headlights. The interior of the current car mixed with the BMW i8 describes at best the cockpit , a free floating flat screen - the largest yet in a BMW will cover all aspects from Navigation etc.

A V12 will top the range again to be shared with the next generation Rolls-Royce Ghost leaving the next Rolls-Royce Phantom to introduce a V16.

Whilst the design will be very evolutionary. But with slight touches of futuristic minimalism with traditional design elements , one thing that stands out with myself is how E60ish the car looks with that high chacterline and slightly sculpted flanks. After being stopped in my tracks by an E60 the other day it surprises me to see how that car is still fresh and current from a design point of view and still can turn heads, the E63 6er can also do the same.
The true strength of the new car will be its Genetics and a testament to BMWs investment in CFRP. As already announced by previous R&D chief Dr. Klaus Draeger. The new 7er ushers in the Carbon Era for BMW not only will the structure use CFRP but key body panels the roof , doors , bonnet and boot lid will be manufactured in CFRP , the weight savings are not only considerable over the F01 but like every BMW now each generation has to become more profitable than the last. Given the F01 was considerably more profitable than the E65 , the G11 should show an increase.

For the first time in a 7er BMW are seriously considering additional models alongside the standard Sedan including a 7er lXi using a further stretched wheelbase over the standard LWB.

^ 1/3/'13 ^

It's the tech that will astound in the 7er including passenger and driver head-up display and many features from the vision ConnectedDrive concept car , the Satellite aided transmission that has premiered on the Rolls-Royce Wraith is also going to be a feature of the new 7er. Aswell as another aided development that I won't talk about yet.
The 7er interior involves a good lot of minimalism.

Carmaker1's comparison of S-Class and 7 Series testing cycles, concluding the G11 should arrive within 21 months:

The flagship 7er will launch with several innovations some featured on the connectivity aspect but other driving aids that are satellite aided. As safety is paramount some methods of connectivity such as navigation and entertainment can be set by the passenger and wiped into the drivers HUD and instrument panel allowing the driver to not remove his hands from the wheel.

^ 27/3/'13 ^

Its the details within the 7er that matter , the further rake of the front and rear pillars that provide the upper character line with the upper surface of the car, because its stretched , the characterline , like all BMWs recently emphasise this three dimensionally , effectively from the rear of the car it widens the wheel arches , broadening them out like the 4er, X5 and X4 to give that coke bottle like outline.

The lower flanks bring in additional sculpture , not too dramatic as the F01 but will connect the now apparent air breather and add some visual content to the car. This also allows for extra shadow treatment around the outline which mimics the shadow around the rear door and hofmeister kink which again gets carried over.

The details such as light units are more stretched and thinner than before thanks to the advances in light technology , three dimensional typical BMW four headlight characteristics aswell as the rear taillights with three dimensional l-Shape.
BMW people that worked on the Gran Lusso also contributed the G11 programme.

The interior invokes the layering and surface qualities previewed on the Vision EfficientDynamics concept car. The central screen remains free standing to interpret a flat screen TV , larger than before on a surface that will be familiar of the X5 and 5er GT with its shelf like dash.

Given its market position it remains firmly in its segment. Its not a BMW that intends to kill two birds with one stone since the Entry Rolls-Royce already exists. The revolutionary part of the G11 is in the body construction , technology and engineering.

^ 3/6/'13 ^

As said before: to get some hints about G11 interior focus on the interiors of some latest concepts, some latest new Mks (like F15 X5), and especially the upcoming BMW i models (eg. i8). Some elements will be very similar. Family resemblance. Don't expect interior design revolution in G11! The change will be far less prominent then eg in MB W222 vs W221 case. But it won't be just an "interior facelift" - it will be new (like some new design / ergonomics of major controls), but utterly in-line with then existing latest BMW interiors, therefore very familiar.

Exterior ... It's much more evident it's F01's successor than it was evident the F01 was directly succeeding the E65 LCI. The evolution will be even more subtle - especially regarding the major character lines. Yet detailing will be sharper! And just like F01 vs E65 looks much more modern & avant-garde, that's will be the same in G11 vs F01 case. G11 looks much more modern & sovereign, I'm told. I was also warned there would be a controversial exterior detail present that would not please everybody. I hope it's not some weird "Line"-specific trim.

^ 4/6/'13 ^

^^ endless walls of text...nobody reads that. A clean summary in two sentences please ;)

Same exterior with more chrome, bigger kidneys and thinner front and rear lights.

Sane interior with new wheel, screen and diff trims.

Actually I said 1 year from the 7er in late 2015. We will see the 8er Coupe in late 2016 earmarked for the Paris Mondial l'auto.
With the 7er's revolutionary genetics , CFRP trim will also be offered for interior options.

The 7er is described in BMW as a sporting approach to luxury and elegance.

^^ and the target weight is below F10 5er?

F10 520i weighs 1670 kg EU..would be wonderful if G11 750i weighs around that!!

Depends how you read it. It's actually a poorly constructed sentence, but I'll forgive anybody if English is not their mother tongue.

RE: the quality deterioration with the F01 and F10 LCI, i mean i hope it's not 100% true, quality is something BMW cannot give up, the worst thing for a brand in the premium market is to have crap quality... even if visually it's less spectacular, or less fancy or dramatic (whatever you like to call it) vs MB for example, everything has to be superior quality and solid. When did we prove this worked? Arguably, the E38, E39, E46 interiors were less fancy (at the time) than some MB models, MB had a visually better looking interior, more flowing lines and fancier controls, but who turned out to be the winner. Honestly, please don't screw up the quality/materials side of things, don't save costs like that.
