There is only one drivers car in this segment and that the Panamera, and my oh my will they have to work hard to beat that one.
And if they there will be a new Panamera following the 7er shortly.

That is just what they should try and achieve @ BMW;)(y)

But what's the chance? We do have wishes and then reality comes into play.

Still im skeptic towards that ..seems like a gross generalization.

I wouldn't want anyone to drive my S class:)

But sure..let's just call it the sporty alternative..

Who cares.

Don't know about the newer seven-series, but got to say that our e38 740i is a blast to drive! Performance may not blow your minds on paper anymore, but I can assure you it is more than enough (for me at least), and on kickdown, the power is just always there. Feels a lot lighter than it actually is as well. Definitely a sporty feel to it.

Things have changed though, so I doubt the new 7-series will be fun at all to drive, and will just like the S-series be just some kind of tech filled land yacht. We'll see though.

From Autocar:
" BMW will fight back against the recently unveiled Mercedes S-Class with a new 7 Series that development boss Herbert Diess calls the most technically advanced car in BMW’s history. "

..... " planned launch in late 2015. The new car will receive its world debut at the Frankfurt show in autumn of that year. "

" The new 7-series will ditch the traditional steel monocoque construction of today’s model for a structure that uses a mix of steel, aluminium and carbonfibre. Autocar has been told that this will cause the base 740i to undercut dramatically the 1900kg kerb weight of today’s model, and potentially even the 1670kg of the current entry-level 5-series. "

" It is expected to be about 5010mm long, 1815mm wide and 1425mm tall. Two wheelbase lengths will be offered. "

hard to believe that, i mean that would be lighter than e38

BMW is not a push-over, small little German firm with idiots for engineers.

BMW is Germany's best selling brand, they own Rolls-Royce and MINI. They have the same rescources as DAIMLER and the same supply-chain, they have and has access to THE best German and international engineers bla, etc. Ok, and money, lots of it! ;)

So why the hell not!!???

You go Munich!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

De-Throne the S-class!

I call BS. No way BMW can make the next 7-series that light. The main reason why the new S Class is only marginally lighter than the outgoing model is because of all the new bells and whistles on the car. The body in white is significantly lighter than the outgoing S Class, but all the weight of all the new toys added to the final tally. I dare say a similarly engined S Class and a 7-series with similar specification would weigh around the same. Unless BMW uses much more carbon fiber in the construction of the car, but I very much doubt it.

Yeah i call it BS as well, 100-150 kg shaving is the max we can reasonably expect.

Call me biased, but with the work they are putting into CF with the upcoming i3 and i8, I imagine quite a bit of know-how will be implemented on their more mainstream offering, including the new 7er. The claims are bit over-reaching, but I believe they could get it close to it.

well i got the 2005 audi a8 3.0 and it had 1670 kg so why shouldnt be bmw able to do it now? since the go with carbonfibre and the engines are aluminium...

i m just afraid that 2015 is a bit too far away... i hope they ll break their 7 year cycle and bring it 2014

yeah, i think it was reported that all the advantages of bmw working on i series will start to show on new 7 series

i don't think the weight quoted wiill be achievable but it is good to know that the 7 series will be shedding some of its weight to gain back its soul
absolutely, even tho weight saving is uber expensive, but it improves almost everything in the car: acceleration, handling, braking, economy, feel of the car

Siempre!

Lighter weight also enables the manufacturer to use other suporting components that are also lighter in weight e.g. a lighter bodyshell can enable the manufacturer to use lighter suspension components. Thus saving more weight.

Which is not always to the 100% benefit of the customer.

Lighter suspension components mean aluminum wishbones. Due to the nature of the material, you can't replace the outer bushing, but you have to replace the whole wishbone, thus increasing the cost.
