^ Yeah, but Lexus lacks handling (maybe in F sport package it is better). I'm not saying that cars form this class have to be sports cars but Lexus leans like a boat.

Is there even another true comfort-first luxury car in this segment beside S-class? I don't think so.

All the others emulated 7er's sportier nature: A8, XJ, Quttroporte, Panamera, the upcomnig Cadillac & Infiniti flagships, even LS in the latest edition.

Except that the 7 series, along with most other contemporary BMW models, have been moving away from being "sport" oriented for many years now. And the current 7 is less sporty then some of those you mention, particularly the Panamera in my view.

Even with this upcoming incarnation, this thread is full of appearance and technology speculation with virtually no driving dynamic speak.

It seems to me that BMW is designing the 7 series to be more of an S-class competitor with each iteration.

How can we discuss the driving dynamics when nobody has driven it and when BMW doesn't talk about it yet? Appearance and tech is all we can talk about pretty much at this stage..
What we do know is that it is going to be much lighter which will do wonders to the car's dynamics.

Which brand can even come close to S-class?
Is the S-class in the class of its own ... closer in nature to Bentley & Rolls-Royce than to BMW, Audi, Lexus, Jaguar, Maseratti offers in this segment?
The Lexus LS is not a pretender to be a sports saloon as you mention above, it is more comfort orientated, always has been trying to follow and beat Mercedes at its own comfort is king game but has come close on some occasions (first 2 generation LS models) but lately has lost the plot and is way behind the new S-class. The S-Class has always been the king of comfort and refinement, although you could also call it the best all rounder as it still is a better car to drive than the Lexus LS as well as the Rolls Royce and Bentley models although not a sporty car like the BMW, Jaguar and Maserati and maybe the Audi as well.

Lets hope it is not another Range Rover where the quoted weight reduction is overstated and when they test the cars weight it is barely lighter than the previous model!!;)

7er will be similar in weight to the XJ, a little lighter even (and bigger). The XJ is sporty because it is light and nimble.

It also looks more sporty.

Lexus LS is comfort first, it's not in the least bit performance orientated IMO.

I disagree, the Jaguar XJ has always been a sporty saloon, it's been that way since 1968. Grace, pace and space!

The Quattroporty has also always been a sporty saloon, and it's been that way since 1963

But I'll give you Audi, Infiniti and Cadillac's recent offerings. But as you can see the Jaguar and Maserati have been building sports saloons for at least as long as BMW, there first was the E3 from 1966

from BMW press release:
"Its M-style OLED rear light cluster marks a new evolution of the typical BMW L-shaped lighting design which, with the BMW 7 Series launch, was reinforced with a distinctive “glowing” effect. OLED technology makes it possible to create a new, more three-dimensional and at the same time very sharply defined appearance."

I don't why this isn't shared more often... it's the same pic but less cropped imo and therefore gives a little more realistic impression. What is visible here is the very muscular flank (below the shoulder line, behind the air breather) and the slim side mirror stand.

I like the chrome parts on the front bumper, the kidneys and airbreather. Do we know what kind of light this is in Busty's last post? LED?

I think this pic is one of the most important ones and it is hardly being discussed at all. I am still trying to figure out what exactly is happening over here:
