Phantom [Spy Shots] 2018 Rolls-Royce Phantom (VIII)

Rolls-Royce has used the Phantom name on full-sized luxury cars and limousines since 1925, making it the longest used car model nameplate in automotive history. In the 20th century, the Rolls-Royce Phantom was a very low volume, hand-built limousine, which in its first four generations was custom coachbuilt to the customer's requests, and sometimes extravagant desires. Whilst automobile manufacturing over time became more mechanised and prolific, and vehicles from other manufacturers could be built in greater numbers and at lower prices, the Phantoms remained hand-built, and production of individual cars only began once the order was placed. The use of the name "Phantom" is a long tradition of naming Rolls-Royce models after ghosts or spirits.

Only a few days until the worldwide launch (27 July)

Based purely on looks, I still prefer the EWB Mulsanne. It is impressive though.

A little early with this, considering all we have are a couple of severely skewed magazine scans of a car in an ugly color combo.

Looks like a facelift.. inside out.

Which is not a bad thing per say. The Phantom still looks royal. But yeah, very evolutionary indeed. The Germans all are affected by this virus......but the doctor says it will pass, and in 10 years we'll have original cars again.

It is quite close to the current car. However, unlike other evolutions of classic british cars, this is a change for the better.

Cars like the current Range Rover, the entire new AM portfolio, or the Bentley line up come to my mind. Heck, not even the Phantom or Ghost facelifts were small changes for the better IMO.

Now show us the interior. Curious to see RR take on the double screen.

Omg, this really looks like facelift. Porsche 911 designers lazy? These are lazy as fk.

Really? I mean what were you expecting them to do?

I didn't expect anything, I am not so interested in this car.
It has new front and rear, side line is almost the same. Interior is almost as same as previous model, that is too much.

Haha, something that one-ups the S class in every possible way indeed as to be played down as much as possible.

Of course it is evolutionary. Did you expect it not to be?
The first era of Phantom under BMW was revolutionary. An all new car, an all new method of construction and an all new Factory. That is why Rolls-Royce under a BMW is quite an impressive achievement especially in its ability to completely start from scratch when many other companies fall at the first hurdle.

The Phantom was a great product and was purely a great luxury car, perhaps the best luxury car in the world? I think so.
What did happen is that as it got older it become a handicap to technology. This was a high end luxury product but could not do many things cars further down the price scale were doing. Of course the Phantom was of course more of an occasion there was a simplicity to its attributes, you could drive it or even ride in the back that was its speciality that broke the mold of what a modern Rolls-Royce was capable of. Technology of course was not on the minds of many as the more technology superior Maybach failed in its quest to introduce a similar identity. Now reduced to a specific trim level.

The new model continues that tradition of the modern Phantom. Its recognisable, it's able, its luxurious and will perform for the driver and the passenger and it has caught up with the times and again it's unique materials again have that revolutionary element. The Worlds best car? I would think so.

This isn't any different than Mercedes with the new G-wagen. This is an iconic vehicle so very evolutionary changes are what's to be expected.

Oh come on klier, this was ridiculous even for you. And I like your posts most of the time.

In fact, if you compare both pics, it is not THAT evolutionary. IMO at least. I would say cars like the new A8 are as evolutionay, if not more.

The S-Class, the 7er... Almost every car on from a certain level plays it safe with each new iteration. The only exception migh be the XJ. Or the Mulsane back in the day (it featured some controversial design cues).

Yes before they turned the Mulsanne into a starring piece Devil-Car from a B-Horror Movie.

"Start from scratch"? :bored:

Rolls-Royce has existed since 1906, and whilst the Rolls-Royce that BMW transformed and invested in since 1998 has been a success, to claim BMW "started from scratch" is clearly nonsense.

This is pretty much what I had expected. Nothing more, nothing less. I doubt the clientele that is catered for the Phantom wants a significant deviation from the formula. I am curious how subtle their integration of modern tech is. The only thing that sticks out to me is the digital gauge cluster.

I'm a little confused on what the designers did with interior dash. It appears to have little flow and form, and comes off very awkward. I'll have to wait for the unveiling to make a judgement.
