Phantom [Spy Shots] 2018 Rolls-Royce Phantom (VIII)

Rolls-Royce has used the Phantom name on full-sized luxury cars and limousines since 1925, making it the longest used car model nameplate in automotive history. In the 20th century, the Rolls-Royce Phantom was a very low volume, hand-built limousine, which in its first four generations was custom coachbuilt to the customer's requests, and sometimes extravagant desires. Whilst automobile manufacturing over time became more mechanised and prolific, and vehicles from other manufacturers could be built in greater numbers and at lower prices, the Phantoms remained hand-built, and production of individual cars only began once the order was placed. The use of the name "Phantom" is a long tradition of naming Rolls-Royce models after ghosts or spirits.

The announcement of an all-new aluminium space-frame architecture that will underpin all future Rolls-Royce models arriving in market from early 2018.

Press release:

ROLLS-ROYCE MOTOR CARS ANNOUNCES FUTURE ENGINEERING DEVELOPMENTS

In February 2015, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars announced the development of an all-new aluminium space-frame architecture that will underpin all future Rolls-Royce models arriving in market from early 2018. The company today announced that it has begun the testing phase of this new architecture, with early preparatory activity seeing new engineering mules tested in public around the world.

The Architecture of Pure Luxury

The future of pure luxury motoring is already taking shape as Rolls-Royce Motor Cars begins testing its new aluminium space-frame architecture which will underpin all future Rolls-Royce model lines. The architecture will arrive in market from early 2018.

Engineering mules will be assessed on public roads in various locations around the world. The current testing phase aims to ensure that the new space-frame structure perfectly delivers Rolls-Royce’s trademark ‘magic-carpet ride’ on a variety of surfaces and that it is resilient to extreme weather conditions. The assessment of the new proprietary architecture is the first stage of a development programme that will see a new generation of Rolls-Royce motor cars become available from early 2018.

“Since 2003 and the commissioning of the new Home of Rolls-Royce at Goodwood, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars has reset the benchmark for luxury motoring,” comments Torsten Müller-Ötvös, Chief Executive Officer of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars. “Now it is time to take the next step in the luxury journey. This is why I am announcing today that on-road testing of our all-new proprietary architecture is beginning. This new architecture of pure luxury represents considerable investment in the future of our great brand.”

Hmm ? All future models ? So next small rolls will no longer share the 7er platform ?

Interesting.

And better if true. A bespoke platform for all Rolls cars. I was expecting some form of CFRP, but I guess they leave that to BMW. All alu will keep the weight down anyways...

Maybe aluminum absorbs more stress for a smoother ride?!? CFRP is rather stiff... But really I have no idea why. @Giannis will have an idea however.

@klier

Structural rigidity is not only a function of the material. It's also of the geometry.

Now, what you need for a smooth ride is a good suspension ;)

Yes. The new Phantom. With an all new Architecture stretching the benefits of composites includingAluminium on the outside , Carbon fibre on the inside.
Evolutionary...but who can argue when the customer says the design is perfect as it is.
Presence is also important. Just compare the 7er to the Phantom and its dwarfed by its size.

My my Lord......LOOOOLLLLLL.... the 7er looks like a 1 series :D :D
This is going to be epic, though right now it looks more like a facelift.

BTW, I bet the 7er is there because they're testing the same V12 in both...??

So,the new Phantom and new RR SUV will be debuted together in 2018 the same year?

Seems like they are trying the two merge into one. This car appears to have the SUV proportions, a giant one.:)
