Phantom [Spy Shots] 2018 Rolls-Royce Phantom (VIII)

Rolls-Royce has used the Phantom name on full-sized luxury cars and limousines since 1925, making it the longest used car model nameplate in automotive history. In the 20th century, the Rolls-Royce Phantom was a very low volume, hand-built limousine, which in its first four generations was custom coachbuilt to the customer's requests, and sometimes extravagant desires. Whilst automobile manufacturing over time became more mechanised and prolific, and vehicles from other manufacturers could be built in greater numbers and at lower prices, the Phantoms remained hand-built, and production of individual cars only began once the order was placed. The use of the name "Phantom" is a long tradition of naming Rolls-Royce models after ghosts or spirits.

This car weighs already 2550kg with a full aluminium chassis, so to reduce a huge amount of weight off this is going to be tough. Even with carbon fibre I doubt they could reduce that much and also the addition of hybrid powertrain will add additional weight so it will probably land up been the same weight or if they lucky 100kg lighter

Actually the Vision Future Luxury Concept in engineering is the next Phantom. So you have a complete CFRP passenger cell - the advancement of the i8 and structure mated to an aluminium chassis with CFRP weight-load bearing section. With other areas using magnesium and aluminium and lightweight body panels on the exterior.

New Rolls-Royce Phantom reportedly coming next year

The Rolls-Royce Phantom has been with us for more than a decade but a new report is indicating a redesigned model could be introduced sometime next year.

According to Automobile Magazine, the redesigned sedan will have a "more modern" and imposing appearance with a taller grille and less formal C-pillars. The car is expected to be offered in both standard- and long-wheelbase forms but the coupe and convertible variants will reportedly be dropped.

Little else is known about the car but it is expected to ride on the same aluminum platform that underpins the upcoming Cullinan crossover. The model is also slated to use a BMW-sourced V12 engine but there's no word on specifications.

So the coupe and convertible will be dropped but they will introduce a SUV variant. How very BMW.

Having said that I think the current Wraith and Dawn is good enough to take care of customers wanting a sportier RR.

^ I think the coupe and cabrio might be succeeded by a ultra high end roadster, SL style.

Having both the Dawn and Phantom Drophead is a little overkill, as the cars are pretty close to begin with.

yeah, two coupes and two convertibles for rolls royce would probably be too much

But still something has to come in return, like for instance the mentioned roadster. I mean, surely they can't let Bentley have the most high end luxury cabrio with the Azure?

I wondered about this. "Overkill" seems like a strange word when we are discussing Rolls-Royce Phantoms :D ...but I agree with you klier.
It is obvious the Wraith and Dawn are far more viable products overall.

As far as I am aware both the next Phantom will still retain the four car family but the DropHead Coupe and Coupe may make way for singular models derived from the Phantom but separately branded.
In terms what you are seeing from the Ghost derived Wraith and Dawn.
Besides a typical Phantom customer also has a DropHead Coupe and a Coupe so we have to cater to them also. DropHead coupe is in particular very popular amongst RR customers.
Project Cullinan is progressing nicely and they are considering something else that ventures on the point of exclusivity.
If you want a Dawn? expect delivery in 2017 now.

That's cool.
The Phantom DHC is unlike anything else around today .....it is sort of like a modern day version of those huge American cars from the 1950s-'70s

Please don't let it be a "coupe" version of the Cullinan.

I also have no info no Phantom Coupe & Drophead Coupe being cancelled. Same supplier is already developing soft-top folding roof for the next Mk.

Perhaps - could be, although I have no info on that either - Coupe & Cabrio will be rebranded - getting their own names, while Phantom name will only be used for SWB & EXB sedans.

Initially Corniche & Camargue had been planned to be used for Cabrio & coupe, but in the end they went with Phantom name - to promote the model & brand, since it was the revival of RR by BMW, and they wanted the brand message to be as concentrated as possible. Perhaps they are resurrecting this idea. I don't know. I guess it makes sense now when all the other RR models wear a designated name: Ghost, Wraith, Dawn, Cullinan, Phantom ... so Corniche and Camargue could eventually join the family.

Sort of. There's idea to follow the Range Rover route ... with additional "Sport" model of an SUV. No, not a coupe. Just a sportier SUV ... But at the moment it's just an idea. No green light & no development activities yet.

How about one based on the X7 or the Ghost?

Is this information accurate? I have read a report in a UK automagazine, they said all new Phantom won't come out untill 2020.

^

As far as I know there are no delays in development. Although they might give Cullinan development an absolute priority. With limited resources available that would mean a delay in Phantom launch.

I don't think it will be a Coupe of Cullinan.
What they have on their table for investigation is Spectre (Development title) a luxury Roadster at the end of the market. And a 4dr Coupe using the ideas from the Wraith but based upon the next stage of architecture.
I would probably expect a further Ghost based SUV if Cullinan reacts well to the market...

More imposing?

Taller grille?

I can't wait to see the spy shots.
Yeah, I wonder if they will keep the traditional "Parthenon" grille or go with the more modern type we see on the Phantom Coupé versions and the rest of the model range :bored:
