XC90 [SPIED] Volvo XC90 Successor

The Volvo XC90 is a mid-size luxury SUV manufactured and marketed by Volvo Cars since 2002. The first generation was introduced at the 2002 North American International Auto Show and used the Volvo P2 platform shared with the first generation Volvo S80 and other large Volvo cars. It was manufactured at Volvo's Torslandaverken in Sweden. Volvo moved production equipment of the first generation to China and ended Swedish production at the end of 2014, renaming the car as the Volvo XC Classic (or Volvo XC90 Classic). In late 2022, the electric-only EX90 was introduced as the successor of the XC90. However, in September 2024, Volvo launched the second facelift of XC90, and stated that both models would be sold together.

I say that I am impressed with this interior. I was very disappointed with the new S60... This ones seems very fresh and with great materials. Big thumbs up!

the 'new S60' is still the 2007 Ford Mondeo-platformed car from 2010. The new XC90 is an absolute clean break from the Ford-legacy products, in powertrain, design, materials and ambition.

The new XC90 is the first new era 'Made in Sweden' - in every regard - Volvo.

A top of the range new AWD XC90 with the brand new T6 300 hp super- and turbocharged 4-cyl. 2-litre Drive-E petrol engine and new 8-speed Aisin auto 'box will probably get around US EPA-rating 24 mpg, which is handy to say the least when competitors' 6-cyl. products are barely 20 mpg, and the price of crude oil(WTI) is $10 more per barrel than at this time last year, and up $5 in just the last few weeks.

Volvo has a major hit on its hands, up against the around $20k more, slower, thirstier, up to half a ton, 1,000 pounds heavier Range Rover Sport V6 Supercharged above all.

I guess they wanted to move away from the floating centre console, i was never fan of that gimmick anyway.

I'm impressed by the level of detail but as said i'm not a fan of the layout either, it doesn't seem very harmonious to me. Reminds me of the Cadillac Escalade interior which isn't necessarily a good thing.

.

You're forgetting one very important thing about vehicles like this, people who can afford to buy one can also afford to run one, most large SUV owners couldn't give a shit about the mpg, if you do care about mpg issues you don't buy an SUV.

If you think the XC90 is going to cause JLR problems well it'll also give everyone else making large SUV's a kick up the bum if Volvo succeed. But I don't think they will, in the major markets for this vehicle, Russia, China, USA people who can afford one want one with a big engine that makes a nice burble from the pipes.

I still believe Volvo have scored an own goal with going 4 cylinder only, none of the premium brands they want to take sales from have gone this route, for a very good reason people who can afford to buy something like this can afford to run it, if they can't afford to run it then they were idiots for buying it.

And you are also forgetting another important thing.
These days there are big, premium SUV's with running costs similar to a diesel hatchback's.
Such examples are the 4pot diesel X5 and soon to be unveiled new XC90.
Buyers who are after efficiency no longer have to scratch SUV's from their list.

My next door neighbour has an X5 25D and it does not have the same mpg as a diesel hatchback, it's barely any better than the X5 30D that he traded it in on, he's not happy about it at all, it's also not a very good tow car, and here is where it really struggles compared to what he had before, where his 30D had plenty of power in reserve for hills the 25D doesn't you have to thrash the nuts off it killing mpg. Volvo are going to have the same problem, it's probably be worse because it won't have a mechanical AWD system, the rear wheels will be electric only, I don't think it will make a good tow vehicle and it won't have any offroad ability at all. The RRS will still be the go to choice for a luxury SUV with offroad ability.

It depends on what you tow and how much brain you have. I did tow a boat with my RWD 520d and had no problems with it.
You pay for what you need. Not everyone is using their car for towing. You won't get good MPG from any engine if you tow something.
My X5's and X6 had good enough off-road ability considering their ground clearance but then again I know what I'm doing.
My ex wife had an XC90 D5 and while it was uber-shit on the road it was doing sort of OK-ish off the road and was great for towing.
I expect the new one to be a better car to live with and way more capable ON road... where it matters MOST with this type of vehicles.

wow, the wood in the cream interior gave me wood :playful:. No, it doesn't have the same stunning looks of the concept but the designers have spent some serious time on details which make it look a step above the rest of the pack it will be competing with. Big hopes for the rest of the Volvo line in the years to come!

2015 Volvo XC90 to feature a Bowers & Wilkins audio system

Features 9 speakers, 7 tweeters, 4 cone woofers and an air-ventilated subwoofer
Volvo has announced the 2015 Volvo XC90 will be offered with a Bowers & Wilkins audio system.

The system will feature 19 speakers, 7 tweeters, 4 cone woofers and an air-ventilated subwoofer that is integrated into the body of the car. As Volvo audio guru Michael Adenauer explained "The subwoofer design is integrated into our newScalable Product Architecture and is possibly a world first in the automotive industry. This increases the subwoofer’s capacity to pulse more air, which enables extremely low bass tones all the way down to 20 Hz. In principle, it turns the whole interior space in the car into a giant subwoofer.”

The XC90 will also become the first car to feature a center speaker with Bowers & Wilkins' "tweeter-on-top technology." It promises to produce a "more open" and "spacious sound."

The crossover also has advanced software that can recreate the acoustic qualities of the Gothenburg Concert Hall as well as other music venues and concert halls.

Anyway that audiosystem looks bangin. And the UI on that ipad looks to put the germans to shame.

Had a B&W system in the XF and they are top draw when it comes to sound quality. This XC90 will have one of the best sounding OEM systems on sale I'm sure of it.

2015 Volvo XC90 spied showing black & white camouflage

Will be unveiled in August
The all-new 2015 Volvo XC90 has been spied undergoing testing somewhere in southern Europe wearing a black & white camouflage unlike previous prototypes which had a bulky black plastic camo.

Set to become Volvo's most important model in recent years, the second generation XC90 has returned in a new batch of spy shots showing a different camouflage that provides a better view of the SUV's shape. The prototype was caught on camera testing alongside the outgoing model in southern Europe prior to a full reveal set for August with a styling that will likely be influenced by the appealing Concept XC Coupe shown at NAIAS back in January.

The Swedish marque has already released extensive details, images and videos with the XC90'sinterior cabin which dare we say looks remarkable and packs the latest technology in terms of infotainment with a huge touchscreen display as well as a Bowers & Wilkins sound system and support for Apple's CarPlay.

Although it's now under Geely ownership, the upcoming XC90 will remain a proper Volvo as it will pack a wide array of assistance and safety systems such as Adaptive Cruise Control with Steer Assist, a smart seat belt pre-tension system, Pedestrian Detection In Darkness, Road Edge and Barrier Detection With Steer Assist and others as well.

The 2015 Volvo XC90 will ride on a brand new Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) co-developed with Geely which makes extensive use of aluminum to shave off weight and will also boast a new electrical architecture to easily accommodate the latest developments in microprocessors, sensors and cameras.

Motivation will be provided by brand new Drive-E engines which will include four-cylinder units while a plug-in hybrid derivative is set to join the range later during the car's lifespan.

Slated to be unveiled this August, the 2015 Volvo XC90 will enter production at the beginning of next year at the Torslanda factory in Gothenburg in Sweden.

Such a long striptease for a baby hauler. You sure soccer moms are even paying attention to this media campaign Volvo?

Yes it is good to see a more Scandinavian approach to the interior especially in materials. Our old S60 had little reminders especially in the wood style but it is good to see a countries typical minimalist and effective style taken to the next level. The Swedish flag is a nice touch and reminder of its origin.
We could never put a German flag in the same way it would be conceived as too brash.

2015 Volvo XC90 safety equipment previewed
Debuts next month
Volvo has released extensive details about the numerous safety features incorporated in the upcoming all-new XC90.

Promising to be "one of the safest cars in the world", the 2015 XC90 will be the first vehicle in the world to offer run-off road protection. The car will automatically detect an accident causing the car to go off the road and the system will react by tightening the front safety belts in order to keep the occupants in position. The belts will remain firm until the car comes to a full stop while Safe Positioning will prevent spine injuries by reducing vertical occupant forces up to 33 percent as the energy is absorbed between the seat and seat frame cushions.

Volvo is also offering systems to avoid run-off scenarios by implementing Lane Keeping Aid which applies additional steering torque if the XC90 is about to exit the lane unintentionally. There's also Driver Alert Control detecting and warning inattentive or tired drivers while Rest Stop Guidance provides info about the nearest rest area.

Moreover, the all-new Volvo XC90 features an auto brake function activated in an intersection if the driver turns in front of an oncoming car. The system can detect a potential crash and it automatically brakes to avoid an impact.

The list of safety and assistance system continues with extended road sign information, blind spot information and queue assist which in slow-moving queues automatically accelerates, brakes and steers the car according to the vehicle in front.

We remind you about a year ago Volvo provided details about the XC90's safety tech saying it will come with animal detection, adaptive cruise control (with steer assist), as well as road edge and barrier detection (with steer assist). They also talked about pedestrian detection in darkness and Car 2 Car Communication (available from 2016) which will work based on communication between transmitters fitted in cars and the road infrastructure (road signs, traffic lights).

Volvo has already announced a full reveal is scheduled for August.

Additional details can be found in the attached press release.

I honestly think the interior is by far the best Volvo has ever come up with...Let's hope it drives just as good as it looks inside
