Saab SAAB - The end

Saab was a Swedish icon founded in 1945. Known for its aero-heritage and turbo innovation, the brand ceased production in 2014 after bankruptcy.

It strikes me how the government (which didn't bother to save it) isn't even concerned with preserving its history. An auction of everything, even the banners used at auto shows, the scale models, the prototypes used for testing, the last eight complete models—basically, selling it off piecemeal—is causing its history to vanish into dozens of private hands, like a hardware store that goes bankrupt and is invaded by buyers of cheap junk.

Considering that Saab manufactured fighter jets for the government, the neglect is even worse. I wonder what happened to that aeronautical division?

A very sad end, one that many companies aren't immune to given the Chinese invasion and all the current regulatory and economic impositions.

"The new auction therefore heralds the end of an era for the storied centre, opened in 1947."

I really liked Saab back in the day. A lot of successful women back in the day had a 900/9-3 convertible in my area.

May I ask why you think that way?
SAAB has had many chances throughout the last 4 decades. GM couldn’t make it profitable. The brand has zero appeal except for a few Nordic baby boomers and a small cult following in other parts of Europe and North America. SAAB was always a niche car manufacturer with mediocre products, insufficient scale , and a high cost base.

Don't EVER say that to "A Man Called Ove".

SAAB was fine, back until the early 00s, when no car manufacturer had such a complete product as they do nowadays. Back then, you had cars with pros and cons, and a very wide variety of choice. Now, badge engineering has gone to a completely different level and the level if digitalisation takes competition to a different base. SAAB couldn't survive these days. Volvo barely does and the same goes for most smaller manufacturers.

It had managed to rub shoulders with the elite; Americans and Europeans saw it as the equal of the three German manufacturers plus Volvo, and that's no small feat.
A brand with its own original and iconic soul and designs, that does not exist in today's new competitors.
