Saab 2013 Saab 9-3 continues to taunt us from the afterlife

Saab Automobile AB was a car manufacturer founded in Sweden in 1945 when its parent company, Saab AB, began a project to design a small automobile. The first production model, the Saab 92, launched in 1949. The company filed for bankruptcy in 2011 and production stopped in 2014.

Shows us what could have been

Several new pictures of the 2013 Saab 9-3 have surfaced online.
Originally scheduled to debut at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show, the model was set to become the first all-new car from the post GM-era. Saab understood the gravity of the situation and hired Jason
Castriota to create a new styling language which would embrace the company's past while still remaining decidedly modern.
As the pictures show, the model was quite a looker as it featured an attractive profile with a sloping roofline and muscular rear wheel haunches. We can also see a PhoeniX-inspired front fascia, blacked out A-pillars and a prominent rear spoiler.
The model was slated to ride on the Phoenix platform and feature a variety of BMW-sourced 1.6- and 2.0-liter engines. Unfortunately, Saab never got the chance to introduce the car as the company was forced to file bankruptcy in late 2011.

It's a shame. It's instantly recognizable as a Saab and it's vastly different that any german or japanese offer in that segment. It's really a shame that Saab is gone, especially now that this has surfaced, which shows the potential of the brand in the post-GM era...

Don't worry. Saab ain't gone. NEVS bought Saab last year, and they are planning to reveal a new 9-3 very soon. The Saab saga ain't over.

Regarding this 2013 model, it's really cool and resembles the classic 900 very much.

I thought their short-term plan was to make an electric version of the old, Opel/Vauxhall Vectra based 9-3, not develop a whole new car?

Latest info was that, as you said, they were first gonna to work on the electric version of the old platform, but also at the same time devolop a brand new 9-3 and 9-5, that will follow shortly, and not only as electric cars, but also hybrids.

Thought so, where there is smoke there is a fire, especially when it's the smell of money coming from that smoke. If GWM can sell their sh!t all over the world SAAB can be profitable 10x over.

SAAB ceased production of cars on the 6th of April 2011 and finally filed for bankruptcy later that year after the failure of the Spyker venture. On September 18th 2013 NEVS (National Electric Vehicle Sweden AB) built their first pre-production cars under the ownership of the Chinese company National Modern Energy Holdings Ltd. Now NEVS has announced that the production of the new Saab 9-3 Aero Sedan will start on Monday 2nd of December 2013 at the Trollhättan plant in Sweden.

2014 Saab 9-3 Aero officially unveiled, goes on sale next week

Has a turbocharged 2.0-liter engine
Saab has officially unveiled the 2014 9-3 Aero.

Looking instantly recognizable, the car is virtually identical to the facelifted 9-3 that was introduced in 2011. Despite the similarities, the model lacks the distinctive griffin logos - which are controlled by Scania and Saab Group - on the hood and wheels.

Detailed performance specifications were not released but the company confirmed the model will have a turbocharged 2.0-liter engine that produces 220 HP (162 kW). It can be connected to a manual or an automatic transmission.

According to National Electric Vehicle Sweden President Mattias Bergman “It is truly a complex mission to start a car production process which has been still for two and a half years. It is very pleasing that we have embarked on a journey where we want to and will make a difference with our partners and customers. Our electric car will be launched next year, and already today we can offer Saab cars with continued high, proven performance and quality”

The 9-3 Aero will go on sale in Sweden on December 10th and pricing starts at 279,000 SEK ($42,880 / €31,510 / £26,125).

As a proved fan of the swedish automotive industry, I am very excited about these news. Long live Saab!

Now, if they would restart the production of that amazing 9-5...

Any updates from them btw? Since they supposedly "restarted" production, haven't heard anything about them
