XJ [Rumors] The electrified Big Cat - Jaguar's BEV XJ successor

The Jaguar XJ is a series of mid-size/full-size luxury cars produced from 1968 to 2019. It was produced across four basic platform generations (debuting in 1968, 1986, 2003, and 2009) with various updated derivatives of each. From 1970, it was Jaguar's flagship four-door model. The original model was the last Jaguar saloon to have been designed under the leadership of Sir William Lyons, the company's founder, and the model has been featured in countless media and high-profile appearances.
The purchase of JLR was once proposed by BMW because many in Munich saw the romantic side of bring Land Rover back to BMW with MINI and Rolls-Royce as was much lauded in the early 2000’s. The problem lies with how much Land Rover and Jaguar are entwined. You can’t have one without the other and Jaguar would be redundant for BMW.
There was a discussion about applying the “Porsche” effect to Jaguar. Specifically a performance brand. But again it would be entirely redundant under BMW. A 3 or 5 based XE or XF would cannibalise the existing 3 and 5.
BMW now has a world class leading family of competitors against Land Rover with the recent implementation of the X7 a global best seller.

The interesting thing about Land Rover is that they have followed the strategy BMW implemented for them under Wolfgang Reitzle who took it to Ford and so on. Smaller Range Rovers Sportier Range Rovers,Luxury Range Rovers were all part of the BMW strategy. It’s taken a couple of decades but they are finally reaping the rewards that were prophesied.

I agree. Jaguar is the problem, they're dead weight now. Land Rover has some of the youngest, wealthiest buyers in the luxury car market and their appeal/cachet is golden, but no one wants Jaguar. I wouldn't mind seeing BMW or Mercedes get Land Rover.

hahahaha, new C Class is already I4 exclusive and joins the bling-bling A Class with I4, there is no going cheaper than that....
Yeah, so? It costs 40k €, that's why I think reasonably priced car based on W205 would be a good idea in my point of view.

You can't sell smth to someone who dosn't want it.

There is a lot of synergy between Tesla and Jaguar-Land Rover.

Electric cars.
No language barrier.
The UK always catch up with America, eventually, so I assume corporate culture is likely the same in dear ol’ Blighty.

Not to mention that Americans love to remind the British that if it wasn’t for them, they’d speaking Deustch by now, so they have history of cooperation.

Besides it wouldn’t be the first time JLR would belong to an American company and truth be told, Ford did a pretty decent job in pulling Jaguar out of the dark BL ages.

Oh yes... Almost forgot... Tesla and JLR share the same level of spectacular unreliability as well.

Just some food for thought...

For context BMW sell as many X3/X4 as Land Rover sells across all models, and they sell as many 5 series in 6 months as Jaguar sells everything in a year.

I'd like for BMW Group to buy JLR.. they seem to have a permanent British brand itch to scratch... I'm just not sure why anybody would, outside of the Chinese - or maybe GM (Jaguar could become their European Cadillac... 'cus we don't really go for Caddy's over here).

It's not necessarily a death sentence... Bentley, Mclaren, Land Rover, Morgan... Toyota... and Wiesmann are coming back. I'll give you Ascari and Veritas though.. and of course plain old Rover.
Dire numbers for the saloons. Worse than I thought. JLR have done well to lower the asking price of the XF and XE for the 2021 model year. However it's too late.

Those two have been uncompetitively priced for years. During that time, the Germans have significantly strengthen their offerings. The saloons also have an identity problem. Unlike the F-Type and F-Pace, they are not design led but look as generic as a Ford Mondeo.

Cabin quality is actually good but visually the design doesn't evoke emotions of thrill or luxury.

... better than that time they actually were Ford Mundane-o's.

I don't actually mind the saloons. I wouldn't say they were stunning, but they're fairly easy to like - it wouldn't be a bad base to evolve from, should the brand fall into other hands. The only Jag I really dislike the looks of is the i-Pace. I actually have more of a problem with Land Rover, the Defender is the only one I like the look of.

I can't tell if you're being serious or not. The corporate culture between Tesla and Jaguar couldn't be more different. Elon Musk would have to absolutely gut the entirety of the Jaguar workforce. What does Jaguar even have to offer Tesla? They're not trying to be a conventional automaker, that's the antithesis of what they stand for.

Yupp.
Tesla's focus is batteries, automation and self-driving software.
Jaguar's focus is........perpetuating the history and legacy of past models?

Since the XJ thread is closed for new posts I’ll post these photos here. It’s the Jaguar XJ L State Limousine. I can’t find much about these cars other than two were made but not idea who built them. Personally I think they should have been branded as Daimlers

watching Price Philips funeral today and notice these two Jaguars. They’re surprisingly attractive, far better looking than the abomination that is the LWB Maybach or the LWB A8 Audi built for the Norwegian King a few years back.

The British aren’t speaking German right now because the best fighter commander in history Air Chief Marshal Sir Keith Park won the Battle of Britain. He then went on to win the Battle of Malta which effectively ended the Germans chances of winning the North African campaign.

I wonder on the advent of the EQS that Jaguar are kicking themselves?

Why would they be kicking themselves? It’s not like the shape of the EQS has been a secret over the past 5 years. Sounds like the electric Jag was going to have poor range/performance which is why they cancelled it. Great looks wouldn’t have overcome that.

Coleman Milne, I'm guessing.

Considering how terrible the current XJ looks, I'm not sure great looks were granted. But is just Kiwirob wishful thinking, as anglophile and rose tinted lover of everything british.
Colonization at its best.

I have anglophile rose tinted glasses as a French if I like the Jaguars XE, XF, XJ, XK, F-Type and even F-Pace?
