The purchase of JLR was once proposed by BMW because many in Munich saw the romantic side of bring Land Rover back to BMW with MINI and Rolls-Royce as was much lauded in the early 2000’s. The problem lies with how much Land Rover and Jaguar are entwined. You can’t have one without the other and Jaguar would be redundant for BMW.
There was a discussion about applying the “Porsche” effect to Jaguar. Specifically a performance brand. But again it would be entirely redundant under BMW. A 3 or 5 based XE or XF would cannibalise the existing 3 and 5.
BMW now has a world class leading family of competitors against Land Rover with the recent implementation of the X7 a global best seller.
The interesting thing about Land Rover is that they have followed the strategy BMW implemented for them under Wolfgang Reitzle who took it to Ford and so on. Smaller Range Rovers Sportier Range Rovers,Luxury Range Rovers were all part of the BMW strategy. It’s taken a couple of decades but they are finally reaping the rewards that were prophesied.
I agree. Jaguar is the problem, they're dead weight now. Land Rover has some of the youngest, wealthiest buyers in the luxury car market and their appeal/cachet is golden, but no one wants Jaguar. I wouldn't mind seeing BMW or Mercedes get Land Rover.
