XJ [Rumors] The electrified Big Cat - Jaguar's BEV XJ successor

The Jaguar XJ is a series of mid-size/full-size luxury cars produced from 1968 to 2019. It was produced across four basic platform generations (debuting in 1968, 1986, 2003, and 2009) with various updated derivatives of each. From 1970, it was Jaguar's flagship four-door model. The original model was the last Jaguar saloon to have been designed under the leadership of Sir William Lyons, the company's founder, and the model has been featured in countless media and high-profile appearances.
I have anglophile rose tinted glasses as a French if I like the Jaguars XE, XF, XJ, XK, F-Type and even F-Pace?
Deep down inside we all look at a few unreliable cars or manufacturers with rose tinted glasses.

It's a shame that the XJ is just fading away and isn't bidding farewell with a big bang.

Jaguars' reboot will be a massive task at hand.

I wonder whether the brand will source its' future BEV underpinnings from another manufacturer. Or, develope a new homegrown platform.

Volume drives economics of scale. Jaguar will likely source a platform, battery cells or drivetrain Motors from another manufacturer.

I wonder whether manufacturers such as VAG, BMW, M-B, PSA,GM, Hyundai/KIA, FCA, FoMoCo or GM will be approached. Or could we see some system suppliers in the mix ? As Jaguars' newly-set objective is to challenge the likes of Bentley and Maserati (and no longer BMW, M-B and Audi), it will be very interesting to see how this developes.

No car manufacturer is producing battery cells (except Tesla with the new 4680).

My bad. I should have clarified that I meant that they pool a battery purchase order together with a big car brand, and order hardware of the same spec to save money.

Toyota is too risl averse to tarnish its image. It would also not want to hurt Lexus. How if China brought Jaguar to is potential as Geely did with Volvo?

If they have turned the corner on engineering and quality and deliver something stunning, i.e. up to Bentley and Porsche standards, it might work for them. If it's going to be the same old practices on a shoe string engineering budget with dodgy quality/build it will fail spectacularly, but for some reason I think they realize this and will deliver a stunning product. I'm pulling for them.

I agree. The problem with Jaguar (and there are many problems) is that they are well-known for their sedans and coupes. Their crossovers? Not so much. They had an opportunity with the F-Pace, but while the exterior was nice, the pre-FL interior was just crap; post-FL, it looks much better, but it's too late. Plus, Tata has a better market penetrance in that segment with LR. So, if the sedan and coupe market are dying in the lower and medium tier of the market, the only niche that makes sense is to have a go at the upper-end. But they can't half-ass it. They truly got to use their entire backside and make sure the product is worth cost, otherwise it will truly be a storied marque heading for the dustbin.

The question is if Tata is ready to bank-roll a risky endeavor like this.

Correct because it's going to take some serious money to do it. Porsche and Bentley operate and execute at a higher level than Mercedes/BMW/Audi in my opinion when it comes to most things like quality or the perception of it which is important, they're beautiful vehicles that live up to the hype in ways not every Mercedes/BMW/Audi does. It's a tall order to try and compete with them when you couldn't compete with MB/BMW/Audi which make excellent vehicles from the lower-middle upwards. I can't wait to see what Jaguar comes up with though.

As they should, for the price.

Wow, Marcus, I didn't take you to be the romantic dreamer! :D

What will happen - they will make make another mediocre thing (maybe a great thing - doesn't matter really). British rags will build it up like they did previous 325678345 times as the next coming. And in a year's time, like all the previous 325678345 times no one will give a f#ck. The decrepitness will be on life support another 5 years - before we hear of another mythical phoenix rising that will upend everything this time. Rinse, repeat.

"Customers, they see the car, like the car and test the car, and they still go and buy an Audi or a BMW," Bollore said.
That should tell you everything. That brand is f#cking dead!

And the ridiculousness of the idea that they will now suddenly pull customers from Porsche or Bentley!

I'd love to see Jaguar coming back strong. But alas, I remain highly skeptical as to whether they can pull it off.

Really? Autocar thinks otherwise. Here is them earnestly wondering if the ipace will "topple" Tesla?

Meanwhile, market -
Sales increased just 2% year-over-year to 2,536, while in Q2 2019 it was 4,634. That's not good news.

"...coming back strong" is, of course, relative .

I'd love to see a genuinely unique, unmistakably "Jaguaresque" 4 door sedoupe (or would that be, "salooupe", if you're into that Anglophile thing ?), underpinned by a dedicated BEV platform. Alas, I've recently read that Jaguar has apparently scuttled its' future saloon plans in favour of two "crossovers" and a two door GT-BEVs' based on a platform of yet unknown origin (homegrown or sourced ?).
